GAA USA on TG4

(Oldest Posts First)

Anyone following the documentary series on TG4? Missed it last night (have it recorded) but found it interesting. Remarkably, there were records of hurling matches in America with large attendances in the 18th century.

Paul Darby has written a lot about the GAA in America if anyone is interested in that.

I saw first programme and thought it was very well done, missed last night but think its repeated on Sunday's? Darragh is an excellent presenter and has a lovely command of the Irish language. I've always enjoy his programmes (sound man too!).

It is a very interesting series, particularly how old the hurling records go back to the 18th century. Well worth a look.

Being brutally I have no time for the Irish language but this is one of the few programmes on TG4 that I've genuinely enjoyed, so credit where it's due, well done Dara and TG4.

Good programme alright, very interesting and O'Cinneide is good presenter.
Pity RTE didn't try have him on panel during championship instead of that wally Spillane.

Last of the series was last night, very good end to what has been an enlightening series. Particularly the growth of the games away from the areas Irish J1'ners go to. To see kids pucking around on the streets of Milwaukee is quite interesting particularly as some of these clubs are mostly American adults and juveniles a lot with no connection to Ireland.

But a very good series.

Sure is arock and many clubs are now being run with no Irish born members. Such is the restriction on immigration today the numbers of Irish going and living and working in the US must be at its lowest ever levels (I am not counting the summer month J1'ers and students who go home in september).

Very good documentary.
Since there is much less immigration from Ireland to the US it will be interesting to see how the GAA grows here in the next 20 years.
There is a great number of underage American players. But around 16 y/o they tend to go to other sports. For many youths who excel in sports they will obtain a scholarship to university which can be worth tens of thousands of dollars.
So the GAA trains the youth and American universities get an athlete who has had years of experience in athletics, teamwork, etc.
