Am I the only one?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Maybe I'm just unusual but I have an admission to make. I have never been to a hurling game in my life, neither club nor county. I think its also important to note that I have played football all my life and now coach at club level so I am well and truly a man of the gaa. Ive been following the kildare footballers up and down the county for the last 30 odd years but I'd struggle to name one county hurler. Am I the only one with such an apathy towards hurling or can anyone relate?

Hurling is the best sport in the world. We, as Irish people are lucky to have it. For an Irishman who is a gaa man, never mind a sports man, to have never even gone to a match is crazy to me!

Well if your a coach and have been involved with your club for 30 odd years, it's very hard to see how you couldn't have stumbled across a club hurling match at some point over that duration of that time, unless you've actively gone out of your way not to watch one?

Alright, I couldn't know for sure but I'd bet the percentage of people like him is very small.

Surely you have watched the hurling championship including the All-Ireland finals on TV over the years. Does a certain DJ Carey not even spring to mind?

Why do you happen to have apathy towards hurling if you've never been to a game? Just wondering what drives your apathy. Seems odd to me.

I would say there would be quite a few football people who would never have been to a hurling game.

You ain't missing much. I had the misfortune of catching the first half of kk v Waterford i think. After Meath had beaten mayo in the all Ireland quarter final. My kids said if we didn't leave at half time they were calling child line :).
If its your cup of tea then away you go , for me it is lacking in excitement and mind numbingly boring.
I never knock anyone for their sporting interests, but personally i avoid hurling at all cost.

Hurling is only a glorified egg and spoon race :-D and only played by people who can't play football.

Kildare footballers have had plenty of double headers with our hurlers down through the years. We've also played in double headers with loads of Liam McCarthy counties hurling games. In 2008 we even played Cork before Kilkenny-Cork in the All-Ireland hurling semi. How have you never been to a game?

As for not being able to name one of our hurling team, are you aware we won the Christy Ring Cup last year? Did you watch the highlights? Read a match report?

This is funny because i have exactly the same attitude to football, if there was a football, id rather watch a re run of a hurling match than a football final across the road from my house. Its all down to opinion, It you dont have to love both games to be a GAA man, Take cricket for example I have no idea how it has any following, but it does. Your missing out! I would say you should watch this years drawn all ireland final in hurling or any of the last 3 drawn finals and come back and tell me they are boring, Id be looking to see your birth certificate if you thought so because you couldnt be human!! :)

you couldnt be.
Slighty different, but I remember when the special olympics were on in Croker and the opening ceremony was on live, loads of ee**¨*s were saying that they had never seen croker before, couldnt have imagined that it was that big, and the gaa had a cheek for hiding it away for themselves. :-D

To say hurling is played by people who cant play football is laugable! Im pretty sure the limerick hurlers would beat the limerick footballers at football! and that goes for lots of counties! A good hurling team would hold there own in football but not the other way around.. far too skillful! and for a football person to call hurling mind numbingly boring is very rich considering how defensive minded and gym orientated football is! ya you were unfortunate to be at a one sided match one time but there is no comparison in excitment between the tipp kk all ireland final and the snorefest of the kerry donegal one! Anytime a foreigner sees hurling they are amazed! not true with football...

I come from a county which is totally dominated by football. The first time I seen Louth play in Hurling was in the Nickey Rackard cup final in 2005. I also got the rare chance to see an all Ireland semi-final which was a cracker between Galway and Kilkenny. The best hurler of all time was a Louth man- Cu Chulainn.
