George Hook Newstalk

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Whilst I enjoy many of the current affairs items on George Hooks programme on newstalk radio I think i'll have to give up listening to him as he thinks the only sport playing in this country is Rugby!, on Monday evening some professor was talking about sports burnout in younger males and despite the professor trying to mention different sports he kept on and on about schools rugby not wanting to hear about gaa or soccer ....this evening some texts in about Declan O Sullivan retiring and George says someone texting about SOME Footballer retiring as if no one ever heard of him....

Newstalk is probably my favourite radio station and I have to say I enjoy George Hook but I don't take him too seriously because he is one of the biggest wind up merchants this country has ever produced......which is why I listen to him, it's fun listening to people take the bait.

I'll second that Hteam, a wind up merchant, imagine giving Joe Brolly a chat show and getting texts in about a retiring soccer player, similar response!!

George is a grumpy old git , who I like listening to when hes talking movies n booze , but I know his sport preferences so Im not suprised , if you put Ger Loghnane on a station all youd get is hurlin and more hurlin ,
Honestly though how serious does anyone think George is taken .

I find him patronising to both GAA and soccer.Says Arsenal are his team, but when quizzed on his favourite player he couldnt name even 1.Movies and booze is Moncriefs show is it not?Hooks taste in movies is deplorable.Mainly from the earlier part of the 20th century. His strenghts are politics and current affairs.

George is a legend. My two top sports world be football (gaa) and horseracing followed by F1. George don't like any of them, but unlike other presenter's he doesn't pretend to be all knowledgeable about something he knows nothing about. When it comes to rugby his knowledge is unequal. Calls current affairs as he sees it, doesn't hide his political preference but will hit them regardless, unlike some on rte , tubs been prime example.

Rugby is his sport. If I was in his position Id prob give a bit more focus to GAA sports so I suppose I cant criticise him.

George's show is superb for everything but sport. He is horrible on tv for rugby. He is an arrogant fool. I don't think he is that dismissive of other sports. Normally he can talk quite well on other sports..

Movies and Booze is Moncrief. Hooks show is super until it discusses sport

Knowledge unequal in rugby. Id beg to differ? His knowledge is ok but he just ruins it at times on tv with the way he goes on

Jesus is George Irish? I didn't think he was Irish for some reason.

People in Rugby and Soccer are more anti-sport than any GAA person. The GAA I believe is more open minded than any of our sporting organisation.
People who love Soccer and Rugby bag other sports. Generally this day and age people in GAA love all sports. I am sure that most people on this site love watching Leinster, Munster etc... in rugby and support a premier league team.

I always listen to and enjoy George....as most have said you can't take him too serious. I think its quiet funny he can name who came 3rd in the 500m Olympics in 1956 but probably couldn't tell you who won the Football final 2 years ago.

He does mention Christy Ring a good bit and can't stop talking about Cork but sure aren't they all like that ;)

Ormond, why do you feel you have to respond to everyone? And why is everyone always wrong, and you right?

George isn't from Ireland, he's from Cork and his wife 'the lovely Ingrid' is from Austria no less.

Exactly royaldunne! He is by far the best radio presenter in this country. He has often brightened up a day that up to turning him on was not good. There are not too many people you can say that about! His disinterest in gaelic games is neither here nor there.

Yew Tree, that is excellent point regarding his knowledge of sport and films of yesteryear. He is an old man, why should he know what 20 year olds are listening to or watching or who the current Arsenal goalkeeper is? He supported Arsenal back when English soccer was a genuine sport rather than a franchise, and he recalls that. As an oul fella like my Da he is long past feeling he needs to be all things to all men!

As a full time Dublin cabbie for 10 years,i probably listen to more radio than most on here.Newstalk is by far my favourite station.I like Hook when talking about politics and current affairs. The man is sharp, great memory and can be very entertaining.Hurlingdub,I do take into account his age for his knowledge of movies.I just turn the dial when that part of the show comes on.And i stand over my comment about him being patronising to both GAA and soccer.Ive no problem with anybody that doesnt like something, but spoofing away that you do,only to be constantly proven otherwise is a bit disrespectful..Overall though,im a big fan.Looking forward to sitting in the rank at 4.30 today.

Most people are missing the point Gaelic Games are our National sports...can you imagine a radio presenter
in New Zealand been dismissive of rugby..i wouldn't think so...you must remember rugby is very much a minority sport in Ireland
and gets way more coverage in the media than it should.Hook is just your typical d4/west brit type.End off.
