Frankie Dolan still has it

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Frankie may not have gone to hollywood, but he certainly went to town on St Faithleachs today in the Roscommon county final. The enigma, the maverick, no doubt about it, the man is sheer class. 1-8 today (1-05 from play I think) as well as teeing up Senan Kilbride for his goal. People rave about Diarmuid Connolly but Frankie for me never got/gets the credit he deserves. Robbed of an all-star in 03, 12 points against offaly followed by 13 points against Kildare that year (points in that game were out of this world and are on youtube). He unfortunately never really got national recognition but he was as talented as Ciaran McDonald in my view without the exposure. Brigis will be hard stopped based on that result today and more importantly, his form. Thoughts?

always a class act. in fairness if he had 10 years of playing with county teams in aug/sept each year then he's on a par with the very best. declan browne, john galvin, paddy keenan are just some of the others.

Yes I agre, he did play during the barren 00's. After the connacht title in 01 and the qf in 03 Roscommon went into a very bleak period. He played then but he wasn't the same player. He has always been his best for St Brigids, as has Senan Kilbride. If those 2 played for Roscommon together who knows where we would have gone. It will be interesting to see how Ballintubber deal with the 2 of them. Everyone knows stop them and you will probably win but its easier said than done.

Frankie has had a great autumn in his club career but I wouldn't compare him to McDonald or Connolly.

In fairness that's a very average Faithleachs team and that was by far the best he's played all year according to my sources the other side of the border

I never saw Connoly/McDonald score 25 points in 2 Championship games like Frankie did in 2003. Dolan never the credit like his cousin did for Westmeath.I would put Frankie over Dessie anyday. His sideline point against in 03 the most amazing point I ever seen

Calm down there chief! It is my opinion that he wasn't as good as the people mentioned, and I don't think he was as good as Dessie either. You seem to think he was outstanding over a long period of time which simply isn't true. And picking out 2 games in the qualifier series against Offaly and whoever else won't change my mind.

Frankie had his days in the sun (Connacht Final in 2001 and Connacht and All Ireland wins with Brigids). Never liked the way he went on on the pitch, but he was and still is a very good player. His performance in All Ireland win for Brigids in 2012 was top class. He didn't produce it too often for Roscommon in his later years with them.

Frankie stopped playing for Roscommon in 2004 (bar a couple of games in 2008) so it might have something to see with him not dong much for Roscommon after that. To the Mayo poster to saying he has had a good autumn to his career, you must have not seen much of him playing he was class from the time as a minor he won a senior county championship to now, it is just a pity he did not play for the county for longer then he did.

It is a pity but not our fault and I am well entitled to say he is not as good as Dessie, Ciaran Mac or anyone else mentioned on here.

The Flaker i was responding to pdempsey post, i am well entitled to say say that he has been class for the last 18 years as it is true. Where did i blame you for him not playing for Roscommon?

Never said you did. You posted it's a pity he didn't play for Roscommon for longer, I was simply asking why not? Frankie was class but in my opinion not as good as Mac or Dessie Dolan.

he is mighty for his age and could do some riots in the backline against ballintuber , but i see o connor could be doing the same as the forward line

The flaker you did say that it was not our fault which suggests i was trying to blame you. There was a falling out the usual gaa reason. I would argue he was better then Dessie.

Allot of hot air over a good performance in a County final which was a non-event!

Looking forward to seeing Brigids in the Connacht Championship. Would love to see them play Corofin in the Final - that would be a cracker

No I was basically saying there was probably a reason Frankie didn't play inter county for a number of years, probably a good reason.

In fairness ban the thread i think was started recognising his 18 year senior playing career more then one specific match. In the match itself he was man of the match at 36 in a county final which is not a bad feat.

The thread was put up to recognise a good (could have been great) career but also because I felt that all with the stuff said about the likes of Connolly (absolute class player but very hot tempered), a player who has shown many glimpses of sheer class but not got the plaudits deserved a mention this weekend. Ballintubber as good as they are with O Connor and Dillon do not possess a player of his class or Kilbrides. Brigids are 5/1 to win Connacht and 20/1 for the all Ireland. Cratole are 13/1. A team from clare are favoured more to win an all-Ireland than the AI champions of 2013. Joke!
