The Family Way

(Oldest Posts First)

I was told that Phil "Fan" Larkin (Kilkenny) was on TV on the eve of last Sunday's All-Ireland.
It was said that he and his father Paddy, plus his son Philly were the only grandfather, father and son to win Senior All-Ireland winners medals. I don't know if this is just in hurling.

Then last week Eoin Murphy played for the Kilkenny seniors after his brother had just played for the minors.

Now today, Mags Fennelly and her sister Leanne Fennelly, Itermediate and Senior captains of Kilkenny respectively, play in the AI Camogie finals. They are sisters of Michael and Collin who played last Sunday. With the father Liam and all their uncles, that's a lot of AI medals.

I suppose with the GAA teams being parish and county based this sort of thing is going to crop up now and again.

Anyone with tales of similar family links in teams?

The Donnellans from Dunmore - Michael won all-Irelands in 1998 and 2001, his father John and uncle Pat were on the Galway 3-in-a-row team, and their father Mick was on the 1925 team.

I would imagine there would have to be some grandfather-father-son all-ireland winners in Kerry. Maybe some of our kerry posters would let us know. Was james O donoghue's grandfather an all-ireland winner?

Leanne is Liams daughter and cousin to Mags, Colin and Michael whose father is Michael, brother of Liam. Still a fair achievement in any family.

Stephen McNamara won All-Ireland medals with Clare in 95 and 97, his uncle is Ger Power the Kerry footballer from the 70's/80's whose own father was the legendary Jackie Power from Limerick's greatest ever hurling team in the 30's.

James and Martin Mchugh both played 92

Mark and now Ryan may both be champions too and James' son Eoin is considered by plenty to better than either of them and will probably be playing senior county soon enough

Dave Power, Jackie's father, played on the 1910 Limerick team that lost an All Ireland final by a point. The three Mulcahy are the daughters of Ger Mulcahy and Vera Mackey, both of whom played with Limerick and Vera's father was John Mackey who who won All Irelands in the 30's and forties and his father was John Tyler Mackey, who though he never won an All Ireland, was also one of the great characters in the history of Limerick Hurling.
