Home 1/4 Final -Reward for winning your province

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

What do people think about the winners of the provincial competition having the option of nominating to play your quater final at their home ground if the county wanted.

Would be a good reward for winning your province. If you wanted to take the money and go to Croker you could or you could forsake it and bring the opposition to your own back yard which would be worth a point or two

No point in dublin playing a q/f in parnell park if we win leinster next year! it would need to be played in croker to cope with demand for tickets! We'd just havevto forsake home advantage!

id be in favour of it - give provincial winners the option of 1 home field or 2 home province e.g. donegal could play in clones or 3 croke park -would also give home advantage to provincial loser in round 4 qualifiers

-- i think quarter finals are contracted to be played in croke park - plus part of the reward of winning province is trip to croker - very unlikely to happen but good suggestion nonetheless

They should do it in the minor championship for a test run to see how they get on in it first if they were that keen on it. But doubt they Gaa would want to miss out on the money they would make from a date in croker!

Royaldunne is that not the truth? Parnell park wouldn't be big enough to cater for a q/f involving dublin against any opposition! And for all these people in leinster moaning about dublin playing leinster champo games in croker they should remember money generated at these goes into leinster council coffers where it is then divided amongst all leinster counties! These people give out about the amount of money available to dublin through sponsorship etc yet when dublin play in croker and make money for these other counties they're still moaning! and remember they need the money from the leinster champo more than we do! a post card with "thanks for the moolah jim gavin and your super team" would be nice! theres gratitude for ya!

I think it would be great Snatch, it would mean fans getting the chance to travel to places like Ballybofey, Killarney, Castlebar etc for big championship games that might never otherwise get the chance. However when you think of the amount of abuse Kerry get for having a supposedly handy province to win, and how this in many peoples eyes is why they have so many All-Irelands, I reckon if they knocked out a qualifier in a home quarter final as well it might tip some people over the edge.

I think this is a good idea. Gives an extra incentive to do well in the provincial championship. It may be a long time before we get a competitive Leinster championship however

I agree. Look at the hurling, a farce when a team gets knocked out of their provincial championship in round one and gets home advantage in the quarter final!

the legendary padraic joyce suggested that 6 years ago as a reward for winning your province. good idea but being aired a few times and obviously has fallen on deaf ears. bar dublin at home no q/f shoud be played at croker. like with fa cup semi finals at wembley the gaa have taken away the mystique about playing at hq. should only kick in at all ireland semi final stage.

I thought the trophy and the title was the reward?
The trip to Croker was just what happens when the Provincial Series turns into the All Ireland Series??

This old chestnut and noone aware of their history.

When the qualifiers was voted through congress, the plan was for home quarter-finals for provincial winners. The likes of county Clare got the home advantage ruled out. It was a mistake then and still is.

The country nearly had a canary when we took Tyrone to Ballybofey for a first round Ulster game. Cant see it going over well in an AIQF.

Never ever ever going to happen. 20000 is the max most county grounds would cater for. Croke park can exceed this if the demand is there, and it normally is. Plus, croke park has got to be used, seeing as we spent so much money on it. I would also say that most teams would want to play in croke park for the experience in case they progress to the semis.

you mean the AI series played in Dublin. Croker is paid for now and the overkill needs to stop. Dublin should always play their quarter finals in croker unless they on a very rare occasion came through the back door and met a team with a big stadium. So only counties that could host the dubs away would be cork/limerick/kerry/tipp and maybe the ulster county choosing the rebuilt casement to play it. Nobody in Leinster or Connaught could host a home quarter final v the dubs and if meath won leinster and got a home quarter final i'd expect them to choose croker.

I'd still be strongly in favour of given counties with a reasonable capacity for such fixtures to have the choice. For example Kerry v Limerick AI quarter played in front of 10k fans in croker was an absolute disgrace. The match would have sold out Killarney or gotten a very good show of support in Limerick.

If the quarter final is all ulster they should be in the revamped casement in a few years. Monaghan v Tyrone would fill that for a quarter but they only brought about 20k between them to croker. This is one of my big issues with the GAA and will improve the championship no end.

Look how good a packed pairc ui chaoimh, wexford park or nolan park looked for the hurling. That's a much better spectacle than a fifth full croke park and a barren hill 16 most of these matches get.

Also as previous posters said getting to croker will feel a much better achievement then.

Non runner, corporate and premium tickets sold on the basis that Foobtall Quarter Finals are to be played in Croke Park.

Monaghna v Tyrone had 20k max at it in last years quarter final. Played in clones or breffni it would have been a sell out with more attending from both counties.

Limerick v Kerry and Cork v Mayo quarter finals had under 20k at them both in an empty croker. That should have been fixed for thurles or if this rule was brought in mayo would have hosted cork and that would have been a 35k sell out and kerry would have hosted limerick and i'd say 30-40k at it.

People aren't going to travel 300km for a lot of these fixtures.

(Assuming each match is a toss of a coin), getting a bye to the quarter final gives provincial champs

- twice as good a chance of winning All Ireland as beaten finalists
- 8 times as good as beaten semi finalists
-16 times as good as beaten quarter finalists.

That (and the cup) is, in my opinion, sufficient reward.

Your maths are totally incorrect there . A team who beats a team in provincial quarters still has two more games to win , and the other team has 4 ( through back door ) . That makes them only 4 times more likely . Not 16 !
