Players nicknames.

How did Gooch get his nickname, like what is a "Gooch". Or the "Bomber" Liston, hope he was'nt a bomber. Seanie Johnston is called "Jelly" because he is a slippery customer. I played with a lad nicknamed "Bookie" because he spent his school lunch break in betting office. Used to play with a lad called "Lovejoy" cos he used to pick up auld ones (Antiques) in discos. Also we have a young one at work who goes with old guys who have money, we call her Lara Croft i.e. "Tomb Raider" you get it ? Had a dog once called "LOCKSMITH" cos if you kicked his ass he made a BOLT for the door. So i want reasons for the nicknames of County players from all over Ireland.

Skippy Cleary. Cormac "the viking" bonner (tipp)

Ger "the sparrow" O'Luaghlin also ger "the *&^%** " Loughnane (clare) ;)

Dodge and rashers played midfield for limerick this year.

My favourite is "The bear" made famous from effin eddie's commentry from a club match.

Think "The Rock" for cork is fairly self explanitory.

As far as monaghan players go:

Padraig McBennett - Butsy
Dermot McArdle - Strimmer
Eoin Lennon - Spindly
Stephen Gollogly - Jinxy
Paul Finlay - Jap

They're the only real nicknames which aren't a different form of their actual name. Finlay and Gollogly inherited them names from their aul boys I think, not exactly sure what they mean though. Don't know the origin of the other three boys' nicknames either.

And then there's the most famous monaghan player of all, Nudie Hughes, well I don't know why he's called that and I don't want to know either!

Jap Finlay got his name because his father used to be called it due to his sallow coloured skin.

Great stuff lads. Try and give reasons for the names if you can.

Good man barney for clearing that up about jap, seems a tad racist nowadays though doesn't it! I suppose Lennon is called spindly because he's a big long fella, but spindly usually means you're a bit lanky or light, which he certainly isn't! Also, the brother is called spindly buster, which I'd imagine is due to his physical nature as well as his stature! Theres a few good ones in club football alright.

Colm "Wooly" Parkinson for Laois, up until this year the reason for the nickname was fairly self explanatory considering his dislike of barbers or shaving....

Westmeaths Alan Mangan goes by the name "Budda", not sure why, maybe down to his "stocky" physique.

Just seen on sky sports that a bradford bulls rugby player called "Joe Vagana" is retiring at the end of the season, can you imagine the nicknames that poor fecker must have had.
