Munster Football Championship 2013

Two quarter-finals coming up this weekend:
Limerick v Cork
Kerry v Tipperary

Limerick have given Cork a good game when they've met in recent years. There has been too many occasions where they've failed to close out the game. Being the first game ye never know but it is hard to look beyond Cork.

2012 QF: Kerry 0-16 Tipperary 0-10
2011 QF: Kerry 2-16 Tipperary 0-11
2010 QF: Kerry 2-18 Tipperary 2-6

It's turned into an annual event for Kerry and Tipperary to face each other in a Munster quarter-final. If Kerry play like the early part of the league, it could be a difficult afternoon.

Limerick at 8/1 is the bet of the weekend for me. We're missing our marquee forward Ian Ryan in fairness, but it most definitely will not be as far apart as the odds suggest. John Galvin is back fit, we have nothing to lose. Plenty of good footballers around these parts, as a lot of Leinster counties will know from the qualifiers. Should be a cracking game that RTE or TV3 somehow have not picked up for television coverage.

Think unfortunately this is the problem with Munster, Legendzxix your trying to sell a div 1 v div 4 team game of football in both quarter finals(granted limerick were promoted) and the interest is not there. from neutrals or your own fans for that matter.

That mainly comes from the fact that people outside Munster have this impression of "the weaker Munster counties". Sure how could they put it up to the likes of Kerry and Cork? Very much the same as the rest of the teams in the country, which can't be refuted.

Is it ever mentioned about the weaker Ulster counties, or the weaker Leinster counties, or the weaker Connacht counties? Heavens no. There's no interest because fans are only informed of what they are shown on television. It's a damning indictment of RTE's GAA coverage that any county outside of Kerry and Cork in the province is seen as a fly in the ointment.

Teams on a level similar if not below the likes of Limerick & Tipperary are almost always given some live coverage, never against one of the top 4 teams in the country I might add. Everybody who tuned into the Sunday Game will know Martin Dunne's name after he scored heavily against a porous Armagh defence. Yet would any of these people know that Ian Ryan roasted an All-Star defender in Peter Kelly in Portlaoise last year, and is a very dangerous forward that most counties would love to have? Much like would anybody know that Michael Quinlivan played a starring role when Tipp beat Wexford in the qualifiers last year. People don't know this, so they simply reason that it's because these counties are not up to standard.

A real indictment.

Interesting Cork selection. Cahalane named corner back, far better out the field IMO. Noel O' Leary and Donncha O' Connor dropped. Paddy Kelly back and it's great to see him back, brilliant footballer but has played very little this year. This game will be tighter than people expect, pity it's not on TV tomorrow eve.

Hasn't been more than a score between us in our last 3 meetings. Any chance you could put up the full Cork team? We're missing Ian Ryan, but Galvin is back and we have a strong spine. Thought Paddy Kelly was ruled out entirely, so his selection could prove risky if he can't keep to the pace in the first half.

Any chance of providing some reason for that rather than just through out a statement? We know they're two powerhouses of the game, but a bit of analysis wouldn't go astray nonetheless. People claim that football is more competitive than hurling, yet when it comes to discussing teams outside of the supposed "top bracket", nobody has or even wants to have a clue.

A fresh-looking Cork team here and it's welcome from a Cork point of view. Pat Spillane used to say that the Cork football team was stifled by a fear of loosing and even though I wouldn't be Pat's greatest fan, I think he got it spot on here.

The only trouble with the new-look team is that haven't won any All-Ireland at under-age level (although they have won in Munster), so they, at least, have a reason for fearing a loss!

However I think they're young enough to just want to play the game and win. That's what I hope, anyway..

Colm O'Neill is a great loss, but I think Brian Hurley could be just as good; in fact himself, Daniel Goulding and Paul Kerrigan is as dangerous an inside forward line as you could hope to find. Given that Patrick Kelly is back at center-forward, the distribution should be better.

It'll be interesting to see if they can break down the Limerick blanket defense and if they employ one themselves.

I'm certainly not going to make any predictions, but I'm hoping for a Cork win and a chance to put a spanner in the Kingdom's assumptions that they will win the Munster final this year, simply because they have to.

Let's be honest , Munster,Connaught & Leinster have 1 or 2 big guns and that's it.
Leinster have two Dublin & Kildare , Connaught have 1 and we have 2.

I know its predictable but a Munster final in Killarney is a fantastic day.

The Munster football championship is totally irrelevant. Hopefully Tipp will build on their underage success to become a force at senior in a few years but right now it is a foregone conclusion that either Cork or Kerry will win Munster. It doesn't really matter which of them wins because the loser almost always comes through the back door to reach the all-Ireland semi-final at least. The Munster championship is just a warm-up competition for Cork and Kerry before the serious part of the championship.

Without Ian Ryan I would worry about our ability to get scores and we need to score enough to stay with cork tonight. Cork will just stifle us and grind the result throughout 70 mins. Limerick need to hit them hard and use their knowledge of the gaelic grounds and hopefully a good home support. Would never fear cork and think this could be our day but the bookies are rarely that wrong so cant really be confident. Would love to see this group of players win though

Dont think its a fly in the ointment, last time was 1992 and before that 1935 when someone outside kerry or cork won munster.
Its very hard on limerick and tipp to compete and have any chance of winning something being in with kerry and cork every year. and there never really even feels comimg into the games that their is gonna be a shock on the cards, id love to see it happen the weekend .but when you look at leinster westmeath ,laois ,kildare and meath have also won it recently, so you feel theres always a chance .
ulster over the years has had a good few different winners.look at Donegal last time was 1992 jmg took over and they won it again, do you really think anyone else will win munster, clare won it in 1992 do you think a new manager could win it for them.
Its one part of the Championship thats flawed big time.

Not looking good for Limerick at half time as Cork lead 3-4 to 0-3. Are Cork the latest team to embrace this mass defending tactic,

apparently they are embracing the mass defence , this plus the lateral handpassing will make them absolutely unbearable to watch

3-17 to 0-8 in favour of the rebels , I'll just say that Limerick have seriously regressed over the last few years , they've been shocking in the previous 2 Munster championships and this was another horrible defeat for them , a real walloping and tbh you could have seen it coming , Limerick are conforming to their status as a division 1 team , no good underage teams to boot , a sobering experience I'm sure tonight was for all concerned with Limerick football .
I recall Spillane and Colm O'Rourke saying that the standard had levelled off , what rubbish , the gap is becoming wider and wider there is no middleground anymore , teams are either very well prepared like your Mayos and Corks are totally out of their depth like Galway and Limerick , pure rubbish
