Donegal v Tyrone

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I know it's still a month away but really looking forward to this game , What are people's thoughts? Two very negative teams but that's the way the game has gone so I guess I have to get on with it, I think Donegal will just about win with home advantage being massive for them. A few plus points for Tyrone is Morgan with far out frees the form of O Neill and Cavanagh and that Karl Lacey won't be fully match fit. Anyway 4 weeks can come quick enough for this one.

Donegal and Tyone arent really negative just well orgainsied.Donegal put up big scores last year and Tyrone are always capable of putting up big scores.Rhis game I would think will be very similar to last years match and both team will cancel each other out and teh score will be about 11 point to 10.If one team plays too loose they could be destroyed

The fact you stated that it's two very negative (which there was no need to) teams means this thread will descend into farce most likely.

The winners of this years AI will come from this pairing.
Tyrone to win by a point... in the replay in Clones.

The whole negative team thing is really getting boring now, tell me which county left in Ireland at the moment which plays traditional open football with zero modern defensive play. The answer is none. Now move on and accept reality. I didnt see Dublin playing with a man to man system on Sunday funny enough nor did they win the all ireland in 2011 playing that way.

The Tyrone and Donegal match will be some tussle alright, but i think Donegal might pip us at the post because of thier greater strength and scoring threat. We're not quite there yet but I feel we'll be better in 2 to 3 years time.

Cacs to answer your question, meath, but even they are been dragged into the negative system even if its kicking and screaming.

It'll be tight but I think Tyrone's defence is a wee bit porous at times which may be the difference.
Ominously Colm Anthony is coming back into form just at the right time. His club St Michaels are blazing a trail through the ACL and by all accounts he was imperious in their win over Malin last weekend.

Thats true RoyalDunne, there is no escape from it....even Cork are having a go with the sweeper

And do you know the source of the modern day defensive, swarming and sweeping play? Your probably thinking Mickey harte and you wouldnt be a million miles away...we nabbed it from Joe Kernan and Armagh, Dublin copied us and Donegal came in with it too. Now the whole country will be at it.

Re the negativity thing...Galway are the last of the purists.

Donegal/Tyrone game should be a cracker, every GAA supporter is looking forward to it, so in a way the art of defensive set up is becoming interesting in its own right.

I hope to gawd, the GAA see this fixture for what it is, its top billing and should be marketed right, there should be big build up, banter and craic in the lead up. RTE and GAA seem to struggle in this department. i wish theyd give me a shot at it, id have the whole country leppin in excitement. For Mayo/Galway clash too. They dont have a clue, so much potential but little appetite.

The more I think about it, the more I think Donegal will win it. I think if you look at the miracles Jimmy Mc has worked with this team, he won't be content with just one AI. They were poor in the league, but they know they have bigger fish to fry later this year. The top managers in any sport always look to build a dynasty and I think thats what Jimmy Mc is aiming for, and that means 3 or 4 AI's. Donegal after a replay.

Imagine if RTE built this Donegal and Tyrone match up in the same way Sky Sports would build up a Fight in Madison Sq Garden between Manny Pacquiao and Marquez. They could create a great piece on the rivialry that exists such as the fact that Tyrone Turf is better than Donegal turf, they could show coverage of the previous bouts, interview supporters and create a real exciting story and build up. RTE have not a clue Man, just look at the Irish version of The Voice.....say no more

We were negative 2 years ago. But not really that bad now, at least I dont think so anyway. I feel that Tyrone have more to offer than most too. I watched some of their games this year in the league and they are as exciting as u will get. I have only seen one true pure team this year, and that is dublin, but they have their negative moments too.

A chara, i agree with you 100%. For some unkonwn reason, the powers that be dont want to make GAA as big as it should be. It is unique and powerful product that has massive potential.

Its going to be an excellent game and should anyone have a spare ticket i'd gladly take it. I'm slightly disappointed it wasn't set for Clones to allow more people to attend as there is a general feeling that the winner of this game will have a big say in the AI series. Indeed, both may have. A lot of neutrals would of attended this game but thats only a side issue. Its defending champions pitting their wits against one of the big contenders. I'd expect markers to be laid down early and sparks to fly as due to the open nature of this years championship nobody will really fancy a stroll through the qualifiers. One bad or unlucky draw and you could be out.

Tyrone have had an excellent league and would be my favourites as theres less uncertainty about them at this stage. I say that as Donegal are looking for replication where Tyrone are just seeking to continue their league form. My main worry for Tyrone is whether they can get enough scores from play. Theres no doubt each side holds aces in the free taking department, Tyrone even more so, but if Donegal can hold O'Neill and Co it will be interesting so see if Tyrone can push on. I don't think theres any doubt that Donegal will target O'Neill influence. Also will Donegal be as mean in conceding goals this year? It makes for a great game, lets hope it is, and it should be anticipated as one as its games like these that define the championship.

Spot on 51longago, two games that you would pay top dollar to see yet they won't receive the fanfare they deserve. You can be sure the lions tour down under will get more air time!
