Hill 16 - 1916

It states on this article that Hill 16 was built in 1916?

I know it was originally named hill 60 and then the name was changed to 16 for whatever reason.

But was it built in 1916 or one of it's major stages of construction completed in 1916?

It was built from the rubble of the damage caused during th Rising.

Culann,
Is that not an urban myth? There was a programme on tg4 about hill 16 a few months ago and if I remember it was called the hill after a place in Seth Efrica where a load of Dubs were killed during the Boer war.Was the whole 1916 connection just not made up to suit the nationalism of the time?and why let the truth ruin a good story as they say!

All myths.....just to make the story 'nice and nationalistic'!!

Called Hill 60 originally as that was the designation of a hill the Royal Dublin Fusilliers fought for in WWI.....then changed name to Hill 16 after independence so as to put our own military tamp on it!

.......Just the same way as Sackville St became O'Connell St, nothing more nothing less.....the rubble thing is rubbish!!

Yep its true that Hill is named after the ruble from the 1916 rising. The same as the KOP in Anfield is named King over Pope.

Confirmation here of the usage of the rubble from 1916 buildings. I always understood this to be the case. I have a piece of that 1917 Hill at home given to me by my uncle when it was reconstructed in the 80s. It was completely rebuilt again as part of the redevelopment. The reference to SA is confusion with KOP a name that comes from the Battle of Spion Kop during the Boer war. I don't know of any connection between SA and the Hill other than that Spion Kop was a hill.

It said on that afformentioned Tg4 programme that the hill was built in 1915, a year before the 1916 Rising??

I'm pretty sure when the Hill was demolished during the renovations, archeologists we're eager to get access to all the 1916 rubble under the area. Alas, when the investigated the site no rubble of any description was discovered. Its a myth and the above accounts re WW1 and independence are correct.

Cannot believe people on here continue to progress with the 1916 rubble myth!!.......Hill 60 was built in 1915 and Croker has the building contractors receipts to prove it!

Some facts:
'Hill 60' was built in 1915.
'Hill 60' was built as an 'embankment'.....hence it looked like a 'hill'.
'Hill 60' was named for the aforementioned reason I gave of the battle of 'hill 60' by the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in Gallipoli 1915 in WWI.....not Boer War!
'Hill 60' was renamed 'Hill 16' after Independence for purely militaristic-nationalistic reasons.

................those are the facts!!

.......note the use of the words 'rubble' or '1916 rising' are not used among the facts - because they have no part in the facts of 'Hill 16'!!!!!

.......End of Topic!

Eg....you and others have now heard the 'facts' of Hill 16 and can spread the word.....no research needed.....Snuffys word is his bond!!!

snuf is correct,

Hill 60 was about in 1915 and can be seen in old photos, both the GAA and the F Fail party came together in 1964 to come up with ways of strengthening the republican image coming up to the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.....

What we have here is an urban legend and historical inaccuracies which is not a fault of the dubs but as a national as a whole....... we can't rewrite history, nor should we, just because we don't like the 'historical'fact shouldn't mean we air-brush it..

Unfortunately, alot of modern Irish history has been rewritten by one agenda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep snuff is right, the whole rubble from the rising is utter bull, Jesus it was built a year previous to it. But like a lot of the American /Spaniard. (Certainly not Irish) devs view, the lie suited his agenda.
