What was the greatest GAA minor team of all time?

(Oldest Posts First)

I see Balls.ie are searching for the greatest GAA minor team of all time in both football and hurling. They are looking for teams that have produced the most amount of All-Ireland winners at senior level. The 2011/12 Dublin and 1998 Tyrone football and 2006 Tipp hurling teams are up there with the greatest on that basis. Any others?

Worth checking out their twitter page for conversation on the topic.

The current Kerry team are the best i've seen at minor level anyway. Love watching their football, be interesting how many will make the cut at senior level

Definitely the greatest team to not win an All Ireland minor title was the Dublin '11 team, some achievement by Tipperary to beat this side, I've counted 10 players that went on to win senior medals from that Dublin team.
Davy Byrne
Robbie McDaid
Eric Lowdnes
John Small
Emmett O Conghaile
Jack McCaffrey
Ciaran Kilkenny
Cormac Costello
Paul Mannion
Niall Scully

And I think Shane Carty was an unused sub, can't believe that team was beaten.

Tipperary not Armagh. That team certainly gave us huge enjoyment.I'll never forget beating Kerry in Ennis in the Final replay.

Either the 1929 Clare team or the 1934 invincibles from Tipp.

The Tyrone 1998 team included Pascal McConnell, Gavin Devlin, Mickey McGee, Kevin Hughes, Cormac McAnallen, Stephen O'Neill, Enda McGinley, Owen Mulligan, Brian McGuigan and Philip Jordan.

But the current Kerry team are the best I've seen.

Some amount of the 1987 Offaly minors went on to win senior medals afterwards.

1987: J. Troy, B. Whelahan, D. Geoghegan, B. Hennessy, Johnny Dooley, J. Errity, A. Cahill, J. Pilkington, T. Dooley, S. Morkam, B. Dooley, K. Egan, T. Moylan, J. Troy, D. Pilkington

That's an exceptional return and is quite unusual.A lot of minors including outstanding ones don't make it at senior.

many went on to get to All Ireland u 21 finals....get several promotions to eventually reach div one...win two provincial titles...reach all Ireland qfs....we all don't have the resources of the Jack's

The 1994 Galway minor team that lost the AI final to Kerry would have to be considered for the title of best never to win.

They had Padraic Joyce, Michael Donnellan, Paul Clancy, Derek Savage, John Divilly, Declan Meehan & Tomas Meehan. And they also had a full-forward called John Concannon, who was easily the best of the lot of them at that age.

One of the best may have been Cork minor in 67,68,69 and there was at least one guy playing (Martin Doherty) who played both hurling and football who has at least 11 titles including minor, u21 and senior- (they won the minor hurling in 67,69,70 & 71 and runners up in 68 with dual players ) (u21 football 70, 71 and u21 hurling 68,69,70 & 71) now someone may correct me on that.

Scan Concannon was actually the best player on that star studded Galway minor team. Which is saying something looking at the other names on the team. He just never followed through unfortunately.

Ros got to the U21 Finals in 2012 and 2014 both against Dublin and the 06 Minors were too old for those. Some 06 Minors did win senior Connacht medals including two members of this year's team Conor Devaney and Fintan Cregg.

Kilkenny 2002/2003.

Full of lads that have 5,6,7,8 All-Irelands at senior level, Leinster's and leagues to boost too. Did the business at U21, and the Ballyhale and Village lads would have AI club medals as well as senior, not to mention the lads other clubs who would have intermediate and junior club AI's.

Richie Power, Michael Rice, Eoin Larkin, John Tennyson, John Dalton, Cha Fitzpatrick, Michael Fennelly to name just a few. Plenty too that were subs on the AI winning sides. In the 10 seasons from 2006 to 2015, Kilkenny won 8 AI's, 8 Leinsters, and 5 Leagues. Most of them lads would have played a big role in that success.
