Roscommon under 17 manager liam Tuly believes that the gap between under 17 and u20 is to great and there should be a under 19 grade also. Tarismelting22 (Roscommon) - Posts: 760 - 31/08/2017 08:56:40 2040994 Link 0 |
I think this could turn into a real issue that needs addressing Tarismelting22 (Roscommon) - Posts: 760 - 31/08/2017 14:55:21 2041186 Link 0 |
I don't understand the need for changing age grades. I know it's because of a concern of burnout of players playing club and/or county, underage, senior and colleges. It's the same gap that was there between minors and U21s. When a player is too old for U17 they're eligible for U20s. I think that means they can only play U20 or senior in the same year and not both ? Why did they just not keep the minors and U21s , have an upper age limit for senior and an U21 cannot be U21 and senior in the same year?

I agree u19 is the most important age for keeping people involved. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 31/08/2017 15:22:53 2041203 Link 0 |
Would agree the gap is large. Other sports are competing heavily to attract at this age and younger. FAI now have national leagues at 15/17/19 and are planning one at 13. This is attractive for players who want to be competitive at highest level and will take from GAA panels especially in weaker counties. I would argue that they should have maintained the U21 and brought in an U19 grade. westest (Galway) - Posts: 40 - 31/08/2017 15:59:35 2041226 Link 0 |
Absolutely it's an issue , elite players whatever the age want to play against the best they are feircely competitive, going back to club as a 16 year old under 20 must seem miles away , the only fear I have in bringing in another competing is how poorly supported the under 17 competition was this year in SOME counties , overall I do feel to have lads and set them free to go back to club only the possibility of them being attracted into other codes remains high Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 31/08/2017 17:43:46 2041279 Link 0 |
People talk about how their should be second tier competitions for weaker counties. I feel strongly that having better underage structures at inter county level would be more beneficial to less traditional counties. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 02/09/2017 14:30:37 2041817 Link 1 |
I don't think introducing an U19 grade would be worthwhile, not considering the U17 and U20 grade changes from next season. GaryMc82 (Derry) - Posts: 3017 - 02/09/2017 15:49:04 2041835 Link 0 |
It is a situation that really needs to be discussed. Obviously little thought was given to the probability that young players would simply drift away to other sports, when the changes were brought in. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 02/09/2017 16:53:43 2041868 Link 0 |
