Choosing a manager.

(Oldest Posts First)

Just wondering what posters make of the idea of choosing a manager from outside their native county.
Vital to get the right candidate and someone who will do the best job for the team so would you have an issue with considering " outsiders " for the job ?

Generally an outside manager is more expensive

Fair enough but is success worth the extra cost ?
I'm sure it's not every county can afford some of the top names ( although I have no idea what the cost would be ) but surely ifor at all possible you should look for the best guy for the job as opposed to the cheaper option.

The most successful managers have been managing their native counties.Mick O'Dwyer in Kerry, Brian Cody in Kilkenny,Jim Gavin in Dublin, Mickey Harte in Tyrone.Haven't been that many successful outside managers.John O'Mahoney was successful with Galway and he's a Mayo man.

They also had the best players at their disposal.

It has worked for many but must be the right person. I know that sounds vague. But a national figure like a Davy Fitz, Micko Dwyer etc can have very good short term benefits at least.

Agree, you would be silly to eliminate candidates if they are the better option and can do better job for the team purely because of where they are from. I'm sure Kildare and Laois supporters are glad they had O Dwyer and equally so with westmeath and Paudi O Shea. Galway for John O Mahony. Davy Fitz and Daly in hurling also.

The one big problem I see with external managers is that when things aren't going so well clubs can lose patience in the guy quicker than they would with one of their own.

Could never manage another county. Wouldn't feel right. No matter the money. Especially playing your own county. McStay and MacHale come to mind for yous. . but each to their own

Personally I don't have an issue with an outside manager coming in, so long as he is better than what is within the County, but there is always strong opposition to this within almost every County in Ireland.

I think an outside manager is a good idea. No baggage, no club politics, everyone given a fair crack of the whip. When things don't go well can't be accused of showing bias to his own club or area etc.

Are you expecting to get the call to take over from Mickey? Don't think you will have to worry about getting the call to take over.

In Antrim I'd favour it for those reasons.

In some other counties where there's a strong county identity I think it poses problems. Kerry or Tyrone are very unlikely to bring in an outsider. In Meath it didn't work well with Banty. He seemed to be given less benefit of the doubt thank O'Dowd then got.

No hard and fast rule. A lot depends on how well the manager motivates his squad. Mickey Moran brought us to an All Ireland Final in his first year. Then the county board decided his first year was his last. O'Mahony came in after winning two All Irelands with a great Galway team. He brought us nowhere fast and himself to the Dáil. Páidí and Micko brought Leinsters to Westmeath, Kildare and Laois. The underrated Jason Ryan brought Wexford to the last 4. But was unsuccessful with Kildare. And Brian McDonald had us pushing cars in training.

Hard to know if an inside or outside manager is better. I think It's more down to the respect the manager earns from his players, if his plans are effective and winning and how much players want to play for him.
