I see spillane is questioning McGuinesses credentials as a gaa coach due to Donegal suffering a heavy defeat against Galway under Rory Gallaghers tutelage. What an insane, ridiculous comment. In 4 years he won 3 Ulster titles, 2 All Ireland finals and one Sam Maguire. How can he say a heavy loss under another managers is McGuinesses fault. How can you question the methods of any coach that delivers trophies and success? Would the county of Donegal give up the McGuiness years if it meant they were competitive in this years championship? I'd imagine not. gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 31/07/2017 14:18:13 2026664 Link 12 |
They try and outdo one another week to week it seems. The more outlandish and ridiculous the statement the better. JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1432 - 31/07/2017 15:15:45 2026718 Link 0 |
Ridiculous to question him as a Coach or Manager but I guess the question is about his ability to put a plan in place for long term success. What he did was very very similar to Ger Loughnane in 1995, got a plan, vision and everyone bought into it. It yielded some great success for a short period and some giants were slain, but long term can benefits be seen 5-6 years down the road or do you look back at a lot of people worn out from the effort that was made to achieve that success? slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6480 - 31/07/2017 15:19:02 2026721 Link 1 |
I'd say the Donegal board are more accountable than Jim when it came to future plans being put in place. With the exception of Mickey Harte, Brian Cody and Jim Gavin I dont think county managers really care that much what happens beyond the 2 or 3 year (at best) stint they are likely to get. Jack O'Connor, Mattie Murphy, John Meyler ..... all lads who went back into jobs as underage coaches etc with their native county and clearly their passion was for the betterment of the games in the county rather than their own personal gain.

fair play to them. But the final say still comes from the board. If the board said to a manager we'll give you 8 years to develop for the future, during that time you wont be sacked no matter what, then there might be a different approach from a lot of managers. Most have to hit the ground running or they're out of a job by the end of the year. But winning an AI, however its done, will still inspire a younger generation to want to achieve the same in years to come. SaffronDon (Antrim) - Posts: 2385 - 31/07/2017 18:25:39 2026848 Link 0 |

Maybe you've just hit the nail on the head, Pat should come out of the closet now.

There are so many holes in Spillane's argument on this topic that it's just laughable. Stems from his clear resentment towards McGuinness rather than logic Donegal_abroad (Donegal) - Posts: 1317 - 01/08/2017 22:25:03 2027643 Link 1 |
It is almost an accepted fact now that Pat and co are there using the Eamonn Dunphy playbook , further refined by George Hook as sensationalist wind up merchants. For a bit of half decent analysis McGuinness, Canavan and Horan on Sky are on a different level, intelligent, analytical men who are not from old Gods time - the others by and large spouting appalling drivel, better to even turn the radio on and get someone actually talking sense Bainisteoir (National) - Posts: 534 - 01/08/2017 23:19:34 2027664 Link 0 |
Players win matches. Donegal had many good players, something they do not have now, as most of the players are in-experienced. Put McGuiness over Leitrim or Carlow and they will win nothing. I do not agree with Spillane often but he is correct on this one. McGuiness knew when to get out and since he left he just spouts about himself and sticks the boot in to Gallagher in a clever way at every opportunity- has he a 'chip on his shoulder' or what is his objective. Teams who are not very good always blame their manager for lack of success-successful teams generally do not get involved in manager issues. Most of the blame experts in all counties probably never played above junior level or at any level.

Er, Pat does realise that Jim left the position in 2014 and that most of the team he managed has resigned? 'Ground Control to Major Pat?' Nurse? essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 1141 - 02/08/2017 08:16:26 2027698 Link 0 |
Does it really matter what Spillane thinks of Jim McGuinness? We all know the backstory to this and Spillane's dislike for McGuinness. It's a bit much blaming McGuinness for the current woes of Donegal, sure he has been gone 3 years now. Green_Gold (Donegal) - Posts: 1870 - 02/08/2017 08:26:59 2027702 Link 0 |
Spillane gets a bee in his bonnet any time a lower ranked team has the temerity to challenge the establishment (i.e. in his eyes - Kerry). Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9073 - 02/08/2017 09:29:41 2027725 Link 0 |
