Is there any particular reason why Hill 16 is yet again closed for what are supposedly big matches? Watching Down v Monaghan now, the Hill resembles a cemetery. Looks awful. Surely there would have been a couple of thousand fans of Down/Monaghan/Armagh/Kildare who wanted Hill tickets and who could've been placed in the central segment of the Hill at least and would add a bit more atmosphere at the Hill end? Don't tell me there's another fecking concert that it's closed for.

No just pure old fashioned discrimination against everyone outside of Dublin, who are the only worthy Ones of cheaper tickets, disgrace

Yeah, sure it's Dublin who decide who plays where and who opens what stand.
God almighty, will ya put some vinegar on those chips lad and don't be talkin aul scutter.
Sure ,the hill should be open and I've said that before on the Leinster hurling final thread but nothing to do with Dublin.

Outside of finals & semi finals, it is only open to the Dubs. Giving other counties a cheaper ticket option, who have the huge expense of travelling from all over the country to Croke park is an alien concept to this current Gaa administration who also think that everyone in rural Ireland has wireless broadband & Sky. The double standards in Gaa is sickening.

Won't there be 3 other counties besides Dublin able to avail of the Hill next Saturday??

The underlying tone of your post would suggest they are influencing decisions and getting favours from Croke park.If you believe that then take it up with the powers that be.

Totally agree. There were 60 000 at the Leinster hurling final but closing off the hill made the stadium look empty half the time.
Its not a huge deal but it just looks terrible on the TV.

A pointless thread this.

The Dubs generate more money for GAA Inc than most other counties combined. They know if they don't open the hill attendances will be down because a lot of dubs like they have with their giant flag will throw the toys out of the pram and not attend.

Money is influencing decisions not Dublin, Daytona is right they won't close it on Dublin as it would have a greater effect on attendance, I wish people would read posts probably before responding.

I've read the post twice and think you could make your point without the comment about discrimination unless it's Dublin. If that was the case they wouldn't open it next week or any other week Dublin weren't playing.
That's the flaw with your suggestion that it's only open to Dublin.
The decision to open it whenever Dublin play is because they bring the numbers no other county would to the hill due to the membership allocation etc.

This obsession with Hill 16 is bloody tiresome. There isn't a stadium in the world that would willingly shut a large section of its crowd space and thereby lose out on income if they could avoid it.

But by all means, lets blame Dublin, and bias and the position of the planets and who cares if it makes us look like tinfoil-hat wearing hicks?

THEY TOOK'R SEEEEEEEATS!

Precisely, but some would prefer we thought it was down to a cult or secret society.

So, Hill 16 is open for Sunday's games but not Saturday's? What in the name of jaysus in the logic there? Are they thinking the 4 counties in Sunday's matches will bring a bigger crowd than the 4 counties in Saturday's matches, therefore justifying the opening of Hill 16?

Some people are saying that they're closing Hill 16 to generate more money. Presumably the logic being that 5,000 people paying €30 for a stand ticket will generate more than the same 5,000 people paying €15 for a Hill ticket. Maybe that is the GAA's thinking, but if it is then it's bloody stupid, because in my opinion the majority of those 5,000 would-be Hill supporters would only go if there was the option of cheaper terraced tickets available, and wouldn't bother going if they had to pay double the price for the stand. I'm basing that opinion on my own observations of going to matches in my late teens/early twenties where I can guarantee you most of my peers were only interested in Hill tickets (or Canal End when it existed) and would not have gone if they had to shell out double the price for a stand ticket.

So aside from the grim aesthetic of having an empty mass of concrete behind one of the goals for the All-Ireland quarter finals, they're denying fans the option of cheaper tickets and denying themselves a potential source of matchday income.

Do the GAA ever announce why they just randomly decide to close Hill 16 for big matches?

I'm getting tired of saying this I'm not blaming Dublin I repeat I'm not blaming Dublin, please explain the logic of closing the hill on big match days if it's not to generate more money, there was close to 40,000 there yesterday who deserved the option of a cheaper ticket do you not think

GAA INC wouldn't have made as much money. That's the issues here.

Hypocrites
Terracing is practically empty in every ground in the country when open , many choose not to stand they would rather pay extra and sit , me I sit , many Dubs prefer to stand be it Hill 16 or visiting county grounds ,
so we have a situation of Monty Python proportion's were by we have guys who wont stand but reserve the right to give out about not having the option to stand.
Personally would love to see the Hill open for all games just don't think you feck23s would bother your backsides going into the Hill
