I think Paul Galvin is absolutely bang on here.
The Sunday Game has raised the ire of Paul Galvin.
RTÉ's flagship GAA show has regularly been more conspicuous in the headlines than games themselves. That has notably been the case over the last week following Jim Gavin's censuring of Pat Spillane for his comments about Diarmuid Connolly early last month.
Joe Brolly and Dessie Dolan further fueled attention by condemning their Sunday Game colleague last weekend. Dessie Dolan's main objection appeared to be that Spillane had done some research before appearing on air. Brolly thought Spillane's allegiance to Kerry had motivated him to suggest that Connolly should be banned for making physical contact with a linesman.
Writing in his Sunday Times column, Galvin has suggested that it is time for both RTE and the GAA to have a rethink regarding the show.
Galvin's moment of clarity came after he spent two nights watching ITV show 'Love Island'
" There are less hormones at play on Love Island than on The Sunday Game.
The efforts of the last two weekends prove what I have long believed. The show is a liability to the GAA and now a liability to RTE too. If the powers-that-be in Croke Park and Montrose have any vision they will get together, take it off the air at the end of the season, rebrand it and relaunch it with new talent in a new direction. The current offering is reductive, agenda-led and has been mired in a culture of bias for 10 years. Thank God for Dara O Cinnéide and GAA Nua. At least that's teaching us something about the game and adding to popular culture."
The Kerryman also suggests that the introduction of a device from reality TV shows, the ability to vote someone off by sending in text votes, might not be a bad idea for the Sunday Game in its current guise.

Absolutely needs revamping anyway. It's hardly worth watching as it is. Too many opinions, not enough highlights.

Is the Diarmuid Connolly issue an unwelcome distraction for Gavin?

100% agree the whole thing needs a re-vamp presenter , pundits and Commentators.
By far the best commentator is Daragh Maloney
Dara O'Cinneide would be an excellent choice as a presenter.
Maybe even poach a bit of the Talent from SKY. I always found James Horan to be very good and interesting.

Sky Sports with Jim McGuinness and James Horan provide superior match analysis, which is understandable considering they are two former modern era managers who have a better tactical understanding and appreciation of the modern game than most others.

Heres a novel idea. Drop all the pundits/analysis bulls... and show more action from different matches across the country

do sky not analyse incident in soccer matches until the referees report is out? it is more than the sunday game that needs a revamp, both the game of football and the championship structure need it. people have turned off all of them in their droves.

I would like to see more action and less waffle on the Sunday Game but I have to admit that I don't know what constraints there are on the amount of action they can actually show. It's annoying to see most of the time given over to highlights from the games that were televised in full earlier in the day. It's unlikely to change I suppose but, it would be ironic if Gavin's attempt to 'use' the Sunday Game for his own purpose led to an outcry for change.

8 minutes of highlights and 10 minutes of analysis. When they showed the highlights of Wexford v Kilkenny, they missed the best catch and point of the match for Chin.

I don't know about it being a liability to RTE, ratings are excellent and controversies are only helping them. It is an absolute liability to Gaelic Football however. There have been years where Pundits have whinged about virtually every championship match on show. They were either too one sided, too open and poor quality or their favorite - too negative.
Zero appreciation for how the game has evolved and that fact that players and coaches play a much smarter game in the modern era, a game that is twice as fast and requires twice as much skill to succeed at than in their day.
Post game comments like "I'm amazed if there is anyone still watching" and "gaelic football has descended in to and almost unwatchable sport" back up Galvin's point. Died in the wool GAA people will still probably bring their kids to the local football club but I know many sports generalists who would pass the local GAA club and head to rugby / soccer or something else because of their incorrect perception our game based on lines that have been unavoidably fed to them by the Sunday Game for going on 20 years now.

Good discussion between Brolly and Woolly last night on it.
For what it's worth I neither like nor dislike the Sunday Game or Sky. I don't sit down to hear what Spillane, Brolly, McGuinness, Horan etc say cos I simply don't care. I'm sitting down to watch sports I love, if the game is good who cares what the analysis or opinion is after it. I can form my own opinions
People take the Sunday Game so seriously, I find it very strange. Take the soccer equivalent, Match of the Day is watched but it's not discussed nearly as much as the Sunday Game nor do the newspapers comb over everything that's said on it.
Galvin says the Sunday Game is agenda driven. What agenda? He mentions bias, what bias? It's easy to throw these things out there without having to be too specific
