(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Waterford look to bounce back from their Munster SHC exit to Cork when they travel to Tullamore this Saturday. Hammered by 19 points by Galway in Leinster, Offaly are 14/1 to cause an upset against the Deise men.

This thread will be used to discuss the game at O'Connor Park.

Dan Shanahan claims that Offaly are "dangerous" and that this is a "tricky" fixture for Waterford. He said that with a straight face apparently.

Would like to see Derek McGrath let his team off the leash in this one and play 15 on 15 hurling with his players picked in their best positions.

As far as I recall both sides have met a few times in the qualifiers with Waterford winning all of them?

true, but Waterford didn't shoot the lights out against Cork..1-15 is the type of scoring return Offaly have hit in qualifier games in recent years so with Waterford not great goal getters its going to be "points" that they will be looking for and while I think they will get over 20 in this game it should be enough to win it, but if Offaly get a goal (or 2) along with 14 or 15 points it wont be plain sailing for Waterford, and shocks happen and its not beyond Offaly's scope completely to pull one here..hard to see happening in fairness....

This will be a turkey shoot. Waterford will win by 15-20 points if they want they can win by more. I would expect Waterford to step up and answer their critics and in that case i'm sorry Offaly but you are in for a mauling.

14/1 is a joke.
Could be a 140/1.
Sorry, but Offaly are not competitive at the moment. Waterford will win handy enough.

He probably half means it.

In his playing days (and shortly after he retired) I believe we did well against them in the league and the championship games were close affairs for most of the 70 minutes. if that is shading his perspective then so be it.

All he needs to do is look at current events to know that Offaly is not much to fear from a Waterford perspective at present.

The past is nothing to go by this weekend.

Hoping for the best all the same.

We will give it a go on Saturday afternoon, win, lose, or draw. Nothing to lose.
Hope all Deise folk enjoy their visit to Tullamore.

Offaly will be given no hope and probably with good reason.
They really are in a bad place for a county that was once up there with the best of them.
Shanahan saying it could be a difficult match for them is just another example of why it's pointless asking anyone connected with teams these questions. It's immediately met with standard waffle that says nothing to upset the opposition or offer ammunition to be used against them.

If Waterford play like they did against Cork this game will be closer than people think. Offaly have goals in them. Waterford do not have a top class inside forward line and nor does their management trust this area of the field.

Waterford will win, but it could be closer than people think.

Good assessment. Goals win games and Waterford don't get enough of them. Waterford by 2 points

I don't expect a big performance from Waterford tomorrow. I can see this been competitive for 45-50 minutes. Then Waterford will pull away

Level after 20 minutes with Offaly playing against the wind. Ended up conceding 1-35. 33 points conceded against Galway...God almighty!

Offaly are terrible.

I am in favour of the new proposals for the hurling championship but my one cornern about it is that there are 9 counties who can be competitive. 5 in munster and 4 in leinster. Limerick and dublin seem a little bit off the pace at the moment but they are 2 young teams and in another year or 2 will be in the mix with the other top 7 teams. But my concern is that in the leinster side of the proposal each will have an easy win against offaly which unbalances it. Outside of the top 9 no other team looks like they are even building to get to a competitve level with those 9.

Richie hogan had an interesting view on it where there would be an open draw to decide the 2 groups with the top munster team in each group contesting the munster final and the top leinster team in each contesting the leinster final. Its an interesting idea which might work a little better than seeing offaly or whichever other team gets promoted in their place getting hammered in every game in leinster and allow them to get hammered by a munster teams instead every now and again!!

Offaly should just voluntarily drop down to the Christy Ring championship. They are an absolute joke at this stage.

Good to see Patrick Curran back getting a run even if only for 10 minutes Waterford will badly need him if they face Kilkenny or Tipp in next round

If anyone sees a man in Offaly with a hurl this morning go over and take it off him and break it in half

Waterford 9/1 to win the all Ireland. Worth an EW bet. They'll almost certainly beat tipp or Dublin. And they're the last team galway will want to play.
They need to decide who's actually playing where tho. From wing back up they are all over the place

Wexford people seem to have gotten quiet cocky all of a sudden...dont like that. Ye have had plenty of barren years and the whole country wanted you to succeed and pull through..yeve done that now which is great for hurling im glad, but dont get too cocky and look down on others. Im half offaly and take no pleasure un seeing their present situation, it must be the worst offaly team ever in my opinion, people say oh offaly only made the breakthrough in 1980 but all through the 60s and 70s were competitive and before that too. Offaly contributed in a big way to hurling and to the hurling revolution in the 80s and 90s.
