Wow.. It's been a great championship so far and as a Monaghan man not the best but we're still alive. What I have noticed is that in our province - a team might have issues etc but each team is only a year or two away from pulling the whole thing together. We respond well to dominance from the likes of Dublin or Kerry and say, right, let's do what they do better and get stuck in! It's ultra competitive and this is maybe why there is reluctance for a champions league style set-up. Brolly (Monaghan) - Posts: 4472 - 25/06/2017 01:50:02 2004596 Link 0 |

Great performance by down an by playing a nice style, quick ball into the forwards. Funnily enough the style that monaghan looked good with in the league. As for Ulster reaction to dub/kerry dominance, this was monaghan falling apart as much as down raising a level. ctowers (Dublin) - Posts: 98 - 25/06/2017 05:09:21 2004604 Link 1 |
Could Down be the Donegal 2012, coming from nowhere after a disastrous few years You have to give it to E Burns and the whole squad The message is clear-- don't feel sorry for yourself when things don't go your way , just keep at it and things will work out Fair play again Down SamOnErrigal (Donegal) - Posts: 1427 - 25/06/2017 20:27:18 2005022 Link 1 |
Bit of spark back in Ulster this year. The football itself is far better than it has been for a while and some really entertaining tussles. Compare the atmosphere at the Athletic Grounds yesterday to Croke Park today. The deathly silence in Croker was like the coronation of a monarch while Armagh sparkled, crackled and buzzed. Connaught has improved too thanks to Galway. Ross common have their chance to step up to the mark now. Ulster may have opened up but it might only be the field minus Tyrone. We will see how open it is after the Ulster final. Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3830 - 25/06/2017 22:30:50 2005166 Link 0 |
Tyrone by 6 points in second gear..........thats no disrespect to Down who were brilliant last night, but ive seen good Down teams and this isnt one of them. hardcore (Monaghan) - Posts: 1366 - 25/06/2017 23:36:46 2005240 Link 0 |
Down deserve a lot of credit for reaching the final. They had zero form going into the championship. I think that they will get a lot of heart from this and it will build them up for next year and beyond. Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3830 - 26/06/2017 01:31:42 2005285 Link 0 |
It's great that Down are hitting back against the doubters but I think you need a rain check. Coming from Munster I hear all else complaining that Kerry have it too easy and Ulster is the only competitive province. I actually hope you're right and Down put it up to Tyrone but I personally think that Tyrone will win at a canter and have breezed through a very one sided Ulster. Am I right in thinking that after all the football that's been played in Ulster only two teams, Fermanagh and Antrim, have been eliminated so far? Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 26/06/2017 18:29:51 2005942 Link 0 |
I would agree especially in relation to Donegal in their current form will not be challenging Tyrone seriously in the next 2-3 years if things stay as they are. But with the right structures in place that could change very quickly as they do have the players. To challenge Tyrone they need to evolve and show more variation but over the last 2 or 3 years nothing has changed in that regard barring a regression on the defensive side of things despite all the bodies back. As for the final I expect Tyrone will have too much for Down but it won't be easy. The problem I see for Down is on the scoreboard and they will need to very efficient in this regard. In saying that they have some really good players and are strong around the middle. They would need Harrison to be 100% fit so I hope it was just a knock the last day. One thing I will say is that in both games Down have played this year I have thoroughly enjoyed watching them play. Yes there are elements of the Ulster style of play with the runners and hand passing but they have not been afraid to vary their play by putting trust in their players ability and skill set. Eamon Burns got alot of criticism over the last couple of years but fair play to him he has learned and really got a bit of pride back in the Down jersey. panamasam (Australia) - Posts: 2771 - 26/06/2017 19:12:31 2005962 Link 0 |
Agreed. I have enjoyed watching Down and it will be an interesting final. If Down prove me wrong and put it up to Tyrone then it will be great for the championship not just in Ulster but all of Ireland.

It's been a decent Ulster Championship though far from the best imo. Down v Armagh, Cavan v Monaghan and especially Down v Monaghan were good games that went down to the wire. The Down/Monaghan game in particular was great entertainment that I thoroughly enjoyed. There have been some one sided games too. Monaghan v Fermanagh, Tyrone v Derry, Tyrone v Donegal, Donegal v Antrim were all well over before the end. Here's hoping for Down to really put it up to Tyrone in the final. One bad result for Donegal and Monaghan and suddenly they are in decline.Knee jerking or what? gunman (Donegal) - Posts: 1049 - 28/06/2017 12:53:10 2006789 Link 0 |
Went to the match on Saturday night and it was a cracker a good honest to God Ulster championship match. In the backdoor Donegal may be able to recover more quickly from a defeat that was on the cards from half time and could be put down as a bad day at the office. Monaghan may have trouble picking themselves up after a narrow loss in a Ulster Championship they had set there stall by. Tyrone v Down in the Ulster Championship Final brings back many happy memories for Tyrone fans since the 1970's and this should continue although the drawn match of 2003 will surely be brought up in Tyrone to avoid complacency.

Loving the Ulster championship this year, should be a great final, hard not to root for the underdogs. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1662 - 28/06/2017 14:07:01 2006857 Link 0 |
