12 Week Ban - Implications

(Oldest Posts First)

It seems from reading on here that a lot of people are not in tune with what a ban like Connolly and Comerfords curtails

It means they cannot play for their counties or clubs, but it also means they cannot TRAIN with same sides.
So Evan and Diarmuid not only can't play, they cant even train with the panels. So while in DC's case some are saying, "sure he will be back for the semi final"....he will in his b*lix!

If he cant even so much as train until the day before the AISF then his year is over.

This is not a thread to talk about the rights and wrongs of what they both did, but just so people who are talking about things they don't understand get it. This ban is from ALL GAA, in theory they can't even attend a match until their ban's expire.

And regardless of what side of the argument you come down on, this is a farcical situation. Neither will kick a ball again in a county jersey until next January. I am not overly familiar with Evan's circumstances, but in DC's case, for what he is being punished for, its a ridiculous punishment. Make it a game ban and then fair enough, but to incl training sessions renders it farcical.

Liam, I agree with you.

The ban on playing is fair enough, officials are sacrosanct as far as I'm concerned, but to ban anyone from all GAA activity for what Connolly did is ridiculous.

Amen to that Liam.

Paul Galvin had to train with cork city while he was banned maybe Connolly and commerford could do something similar.

But sure who would know if they were inside training away with the team behind closed doors, I mean who's going to rat them out?

Excellent post Liam, but are you correct in saying that "in theory" they can't even attend a game ?
Davy Fitz was serving a similar ban for Wexfords 2 games ( v Lois & Kilkenny) but it didn't stop him from attending those games.
I do agree though that it should be a game- specific ban as opposed to the 12 week term currently in use.

Why are they not allowed train with the panel? That's a crazy rule.

Crazy as it is, it's a fact. Surely people don't think that ban is fitting

Agreed sure look how many people get bans near the end of the season and wouldn't even miss as much as a training session.

The whole time based suspensions need to be looked at as they mean that someone can commit the same infringement as someone else but get a much less severe punishment, although still technically the same punishment, depending on the time of year.

For example, say Dublin make the All-Ireland Final this year and Bernard Brogan does the exact same thing that Connolly did and rightly receives his punishment of a 12 week suspension. All he'd miss is a few league games with the club as Plunkett's are already out of the Championship. Connolly could potentially miss the rest of inter county Championship depending on results.

It's a crazy situation that two players could get technically the same punishment but in reality two very different punishments.

They are allowed attend GAA games. Look at Davy Fitz and McGeeney.

Agree that the rule needs to be reviewed. Those suspended may attend matches but may not take part in any way, be it training, dressing room, etc. Impossible to police though - who's to say that the 26 friends that I invited over to the local hotel for a chat are a formal part of the GAA or are just my mates and we are just chatting about something we have in common!!!

Yeah look I think the whole disciplinary procedure is a shambles. I said before on another thread they need to go away and sit down for as long as it takes and come up with something sensible instead of all this hap-hazard, ambiguous, inconsistent path that is currently being followed.

As a poster mentioned the ban is insane where a player can't even train with the team eg Paul Galvin
It is funny how this part of these long term bans the GAA havent been brought to task about this. It is not really in the spirit of the sport.

But I do think DC should just accept his punishment!
But in future if time bans stay in place , players and management should be able to do the training.

It makes sense as to why they are appealing it then. A lot of journalists and fans (Dubs included) saying he should accept his punishment etc. don't seem to realise that if he does then his season is effectively over. Why would you accept it? I'm sure if it was a 12-week match only ban they would have taken it.

Can Connolly train and play while appeal is on going? If so would this period not be included in his ban if his appeals ultimately fail and end up ruling him out of the semi final?

As I said before the whole punishment system is a shambles but for the man in question he needs to have a look at himself also. While having this edge helps make him the player he is he is not a kid anymore either and really needs to reign it in a bit for his own sake and the sake of his teams. You look at Dele Ali at Spurs and he is a similar genius with an edge yet at 21 yrs old already seems to have learned a lot from his scrapes the season before last and certainly has matured but still maintained that edge. All about playing right up to the edge but not going over it too far or too often.
