Offaly v Westmeath

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

This Sunday is very much derby day in the provincial football championships and in Leinster Westmeath face a tricky test against Offaly in Tullamore. The winners advance to a semi-final against Dublin on June 25th, while the losers host either Cavan or Monaghan on the same date.

This thread will be used to discuss the clash at O'Connor Park.

Offaly will be keen to avenge last year's defeat in Mullingar, Niall Mc Namee, Paul Mc Conway, and Anton Sullivan are back on the panel, as is Ruairi Allen. The team has not been announced yet, but Mc Namee is expected to start. Westmeath will be slight favourites, but if Offaly play as they did at times v Laois they could pull through. Interviews with Pat Flanagan, and team captain, Sean Pender in local press this week.

Both managers are facing former teams, Pat Flanagan managed Westmeath to Division 1 league status, while Tom Cribbin is a former Offaly boss.

Should be an interesting game, it will be competitive. Throw in is 3pm.

Not the most celebrated derby around but one of the bitterest. Won't be much in it.

Is it really that bitter? I would of thought that Offaly v Laois or Kildare would be more bitter and Westmeath v Meath would be the same? Any rivalry at all between yourselves and Longford?

Westmeath versus Offaly is the most intense rivalry for us in my experience . The insults fly on match day. You would have a lot of towns and villages along the border whose pubs share customers from both sides so the bragging rights are fought hard for on the pitch regardless of how either side is going otherwise.
Meath Westmeath not near as bad although it built up a bit in the last 20 years. The part of Westmeath which borders Meath is mainly a Hurling area except around Kinnegad where there would be a big football rivalry where Meath Offaly and Kildare are all nearby.
Rivalry with Longford is fairly low key. Maybe Longford people think differently as we are their only neighbours from Leinster.

In Athlone would there be much rivalry between Westmeath and the Rossies? Both of theses sides have never played each other in the championship. In 2012 when Garrycastle and St Brigids played each other in the All Ireland Club semi-final in Longford there was some crowd at it.

Not really i am from the Roscommon side of Athlone and i would support westmeath any time they play, There wouldnt be any bitterness or rivalry IMO. Saying that when we havnt faced each other in a championship game so its hard to tell could be a different story if we ever were to meet in a meaninful game.

Ziggy I suppose it all depends on where you live in the county. You are an Ashbourne man so the Dubs are arch enemy number one. If you ask a Meath man who lives near the Westmeath border like Athboy or Ballivor it could be a different story.

I take it you are a Brigid's man then? I was in the Snug bar in Athlone. It's a real Brigid's pub.

This is the only game matters to me this year. Win and it's a great year, lose and it's a disaster. Westmeath seem to have our number in league and championship the last few years so I'm confident at all. We blew it last year and we have only regressed. Hopefully the lads put in a display and win but I'd back Westmeath

i was in athboy for a while,it is still dublin in general to be honest. the meath/dublin thing is generally a mutual dislike.

Close to 9,000 in attendance here , low scoring game but both sides went at each other from the start. I think Westmeath will win the replay in mullingar, Offaly had an up hill battle going down to 14 and then 13 men .

Poor fair alright, either won't trouble Dublin that's for sure. I'd expect Westmeath to win the replay next Saturday in Mullingar.
