Fergal Boland and Keith Higgins from Mayo. IMO there's not so much the GAA can do about the dearth of dual players at county level these days, as county managers tend to be hostile towards dualism. It's understandable to an extent, given the level of effort required to play even one code at inter-county these days, not to mention the competing demands of colleges and clubs also. It seems to be different in the ladies' codes- think there are several from Cork who have managed both in recent years. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 17/05/2017 15:06:33 1987566 Link 0 |

Fair play to Chester. Noone on the Longford football panel would even dream of playing county hurling. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 18/05/2017 01:23:15 1987775 Link 0 |
Its hasn't happened in Antrim for a long time dispite a lot of players who would be and are dual stars for their club teams. In fact looking at my own club, I know that players find it difficult to do both at present. There doesn't seem to be much badge unity in this day and age. Managers tend to have their own tunnel vision with no tolerance for disruption. Hats off to the lads who do try their hand at both but certainly at county level, with semi professionalism on its way, i can only see the dual star becoming a dying breed. There was an interested study published by Liam Hennessy of Setanta College suggesting that at elite (inter-county) minor level, dual players may actually be LESS prone to injury that their single code counterparts. This certainly contradicts the prevailing notion that young players need to specialise early. football first (None) - Posts: 1259 - 18/05/2017 12:38:10 1987891 Link 0 |
I'd like to see that study more publicised.
