National - Paudie Maher

Replying To tiobraid:  "I have indeed. Neither of them caught as many ball in their own square as Paudie Maher. Excellent under the high ball alright..no doubt that. I haven't seen either hurl for a while now but I'm sure neither are ahead of him at the minute!!!"
JJ caught more ball over his head in the square than anyone of his generation and Tommy lorded the skies from wing back-same position as maher. Take off the tipperary specs!

Replying To mike03:  "With the risk or starting a riot I'll add something to the argument. Maher is unreal to win ball BUT his delivery is shocking. Most balls are pumped high and long to a huge roar from the crowd. The roar masks the fact that the ball has put his forwards under a huge disadvantage as it takes half the day to fall from the sky. Watch him on Sunday and then tell me im wrong."
Up to last year there was an element of that but I think you did not see much of 2015,2016 championship in particular, delivery now very measured.Same against Wexford at the weekend laid in some lovely ball in front of the forwards.

The question was in his own square and while JJ is up there he certainly didn't win as much ball in there as Maher. Take off your anti-Tipp specs and watch how game after game he seems to come out with ball after ball.

Paudie can catch plenty as a spare man BUT struggled very badly with the weight to the No 3 jersey and had to be moved out before big Cussen and the lesser of the three O'Halpain brothers tore him asunder!!

Great hurler all the same who's better suited to the spaces of the half back line.

As a 19/20 year old....
JJ got roasted in the 2010 final and never played wing back after but was excellent at full back, similar to Paudie

I see where you coming from but I'd agree with the other poster that they have come on no end. Tommy Walsh was probably one of the worst with terms of quality of ball that went in. Everything went as far as he could puck it with the exception of one game ...

Yeah, Tommy Walsh - 9 All-Ireland winners medals, 9 All-Stars, Wasn't it amazing how the rest of the Kilkenny had to carry a player like him?

Were you actually at the 2010 final? Maybe you were caught up in the ecstasy of Tipp winning the all Ireland, but JJ Delaney had a brilliant game in the 2010 final! He was easily the best KK player on the day. I had him as my man of the match actually. I remember loads of disappointed KK fans commenting that JJ was unreal in defeat. Obviously the man of the match rightly goes to the winning team so it was going to be between Lar, Noel McGrath & P.Maher. But to say he was roasted is scandalous.

I'm fairly sure JJ Delaney was Man of the match in the 2011 All Ireland final against Tipp and he was playing half back..

100% and Maher got destroyed by Eddie Brennan . I remember thinking it was strange seeing Eddie line out in half forward line but after 5 mins it was obvious .
Maher has a bit to go yet to be compared to Jj alright

I was at it and remember it well. Gearoid Ryan had his best game for Tipp and turned the game in Tipp's favour in the second half. JJ let him loose and may have picked up some loose ball but that was by far his worst game and maybe only poor game for KK

Callanan scored 2-3 and 0-5 from play versus JJ in 2014 AI finals...dont think Paudi has ever conceded that amount.
2009 League and AI finals, Cody sent the mighty Shefflin in on the young Maher to expose him....on both occasions Shefflin was easily contained.
All about opionions but its Paudi for me easily.

The thing people are missing, is that comparing different teams, era's, etc is a fallacy in a teams game.
There is no doubt Paudie Maher brings a huge amount to Tipp, but sure does he get all this space due to tight marking of others, etc.
Its a team game lads!

Michael Fennelly scored 2-3 from centre forward in the 2013 league final. I think it was 2-2 in the 1st half . Maher was centre back in the 1st half, he wasn't left there for the 2nd half.

Another post says that JJ picked up a few loose balls in 2010 AI final. Maher is usually the free man for Tipp as most teams withdraw a forward. He picks up a lot of loose ball.

Padraic maher is very good when the ball is landing on him or out in front of him but can be exposed when facing back towards his own goal. Kilkenny have exposed that in the past (Eddie Brennan in 2011 and Walter Walsh in league a few years ago). It's a shame we don't have the hurlers to expose it now. That job isn't purely down to the wing forward. It is also down to the quality of ball in over maher to turn him around.

Ronan Maher is a far better all round hurler that Padraic

Ronan Maher is probably a better centre back but not an all round better hurler. I'd agree as a centre back he hurled too loose but I don't think its the same at 7. Probably gone way off the original topic anyway at this stage anyway! Eddie Brennan hurled well in 2011 but I don't think he cleaned him. from memory he only scored one point from 100 yards. Granted he had a big influence on the game but he played very deep and no wing back would follow him into his own half back line

Has any player ever won ball dropping into their own square as much as paudie Maher? The man is like a magnet to any frees dropping short in the square.

Begs the question how he's left as the free man in those situations"
Maybe but there is no question he has a superb catch, in fairness quite a few of the Tipp players are excellant at it.

Callanan didn't score 2-3 from play in 2014 replay. He scored 2-0 from play. The first goal was a mistake by Paul Murphy which Lar took advantage of with a great run creating a 2 on 1, he drew JJ and set up Callanan with a handpass for a simple finish. The second goal was towards the end of the game when a Tipp player shot for a goal, it took a freak deflection and fell to Callanan at corner of square and he buried it. Neither had anything to do with JJ. You can't just look at the paper the next day and say "14 scored a lot, therefore 3 must have been bad". Also, the way you say "the mighty shefflin" suggests you don't believe he was as good as people say. You might as well be honest and tell us what Tipp players you think were better than him, cos I bet there are some you think are, don't be afraid to air your views!
