Was Gooch as good as Canavan?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Gooch was one of the all time greats, but do people think he was the best forward of his generation?!...I would still have choosen Peter Canavan over him.

How dare you!

You are not allowed such an opinion. It is not received wisdom!

Are they of the same generation? Career overlapped alright I suppose.

Out of the two I'd probably take Canavan but that's personal preference to be honest.

Two fantastic players.

Can we just not pay the man his dues for today and leave the comparisons for later in the week at least.

Was Turner as good as Monet, was Chopin as good as Holst, is a moro as good as a snickers.

Time enough for all this.

As great a player as Canavan was. I think Cooper was a better player. One main reason would be the goochs ability to play the perfect pass. In his latter years he often played more out the field and could pinpoint the perfect pass. Canavan was solely a forward and finisher. Both great players but Gooch gets the nod.

He may well have been but it's all subjective. Like.what metric do you use to say who's better? Points scored in league+championship/impact on all Ireland finals/number of trophies and medals won etc etc

Be nice to take both.. imagine

But this is a good question

I'd have to say Canavan, but perhaps God was a little before Gooches time

Would have loved to see Canavan in his prime for Tyrone across the 00's

The Gooch was a more skilful footballer than Canavan but Canavan was a better footballer than The Gooch.

Philip Jordan said in an interview a few weeks back that gooch was the best player he ever saw .
So that says enough for me .
But I still loved Peter canavan as well and a pure gentleman any time I met him.

Eh your preference as to who was better is subjective, but it's wrong to say Canavan was just a finisher. He was as good a passer/playmaker as any.

I've often thought about a 26 year old Canavan in them 00's team's. it would be a scary thought. Canavan played in some poor Tyrone teams and made them look good. Im always going to say Canavan but Gooch was some operator.

2005 AL final, Canavan's final year, had a few injuries, but was still able to score that great goal against Kerry. I think it probably justify's my opinion.

Gooch was possibly an even greater artist, but Canavan possibly had an even bigger impact on matches. The roughhouse treatment Canavan withstood in Ulster also needs to be noted. And Gooch had superior teammates. Some difficult choice alright!
