The Gooch retires

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Well if the sports news on RTÉ is correct this morning we will bid farewell to one of the all time greats! Absolute genius of a player and a joy to watch also had the pleasure of meeting him in Tatlers a couple of years ago and was so generous with his time for my kids who were starstruck at meeting him in the flesh. As a Dublin man he's given me a few horrible day's in Croker but as a gaelic football fan he's given me some of my best memories, whenever the greats of the game are mentioned I'm sure he'll always be one of the first names to roll off the tongue, enjoy your well deserved retirement and thank you for the memories!

In my opinion, the best players of the last 10 years (1. being the best and so on):

1. Colm Cooper
2. Sean Kavanagh
3. Diarmuid Connolly

No hate please.

Well it's a sad day when Colm Cooper retires. He destroyed Mayo on many occasions but you just have to admire his class. He made kicking a ball over the bar look easy. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Not only a great point scorer but a great reader of the game too.

Going out on a high by winning the a club All Ireland. Enjoy your retirement Colm.

Thanks for all the wonderful memories Colm. One of the best foot passers of a ball ever.

What a player he was , without doubt one off the greats , a very decent fella too , will always remember him giving his time up
to take a training session with the kids in my club St Oliver Plunkett Eoghan Ruadh a few weeks after losing the 2011 All Ireland final.
A true legend of the game.

Will the greatest forward of them all Colm Gooch Cooper retire if Dr Crokes win the All Ireland? At 34 next season and winning the greatest club prize on offer would there be much point in staying on with the Kerry seniors who are building to the future with there great minor players coming through? Personally I think if he wins the Club I think he will retire in glory and I also think he should. Don't out stay your welcome a few kerry players have already done that and it just holds back the team and talent coming through.

Jesus I get abuse on here all the time but how often am I bang on the money?

Sad day the greatest forward I've ever seen all the best Gooch.

Don't do it Gooch! Give it one more year.

Even though he broke our hearts many a time I don't want to see one of the greats of my generation call time on his career. The Gooch has something special. I hope it's not true.

GAA football is a poorer place this morning.

A privilege to live through his playing time.

little by little the true gifted players are being wiped from the game. what a player Cooper has been. i can clearly remember his debut back in 2002 and as a 12 year old back then he didn't really look any older than me, but my god did we get a glimpse of what was to come. I'd love to hear other peoples opinions but my favourite moment out of god knows how many has to be the ball played into Donncha walsh in 2013 for the O Donoghue goal against dublin, speed, precision and pure unfiltered class and then to follow it up a few minutes later with another beautiful pass for a walsh goal. I could go on and on about him. In years to come we'll be talking about him like our fathers did of Matt Connor and Mickey Sheehy etc

Great player

Not only a forward that scored but setup so many scores from his direct contributions and his selfless runs making the space that is so often over looked, for me it's one of the best skills as it shows an understanding of the game beyond a lot of players, he had one of the best football thinking heads.

Deserves every possible plaudit but no one is perfect

Down side was he was a bit of a winger to refs, always a slight turn off for me.

Good luck to you Colm in the years ahead, still an awful lot to offer Kerry GAA

It's like you have a superpower or something. Literally no-one saw that coming.
