National - Does GAA get fair coverage compared to soccer and rugby

Green and red I think you are been unfair on mediaman, he I believe does not want gaa been the only sport rte news report but wants fair coverage given to it which I think is reasonable and I would argue rte do not give fair coverage to other sports. The majority of rte viewers may not want to watch the Connacht final alot of people have no interest in any sport but there would be a large enough amount of people who are interested in watching it to make it commercially profitable, plus I would argue rte are not meeting it's public service obligations by not showing it. There is no reason why rte can't show both the Olympics and the Connacht final, I still watch the Olympics despite the drugs. The problem i have was the amount of people rte sent to rio many of whom would have covered it from Dublin.

Good post. How are you calcaluting that it would be commercially profitable?
Also i thought the same about the amount of people RTE send to the Olympics - do you have a figure of how many people they sent?

From the ratings and commerical revenue it would bring in. Rte have sent at least 20 on air people could be more as it hard to know if some of the commenators are doing it from Dublin or rio. Thats not mentioning the amount of background people security and technical people. Even The rte website has sent a reporter for some reason.

greengrass i think he has done this consistently across the six one news , not across tv if he did youd be including live matches other programmes where in fairness the coverage is usually positive

ps good luck to Dundalk next week -massive achievement to get to (at worst) europa league, hope they make champions league and enjoy the resulting riches and glory"
Janesboro, the coverage on RTE's live programmes is not generally positive. It is, particularly when Messers Spillane, O Rourke and Brolly are involved relentlessly and overwhelmingly negative. Compare it to Sky's coverage. With regards to RTE not competing with TV3 are TV3 not owned by Liberty Global which is a multinational with 32,000 employees? I agree with you in relation to The PRO12. THanks very much for the good wishes in reLAtion to Dundalk. What an achievement and hopefully more to come. Great to see RTE finally acknowledged it and will be covering next Wednesday's game.

yeah they are, same with some of the rugby and soccer pundits though - hence i dont watch them -radio punditry is generally better and sunday game is too , think hurling punditry good on rte, your right the sky panels are generally good on gaa, rugby and soccer, even american football and darts , Best rte panels by far are racing hurling boxing - like the sky counterparts they do something mad and revolutionary - they actually tell you whats going on in the game,I dont mind rugby or gaa being on tg4 - like the coverage -keeps my irish up to date too

If tv3 have that money available i wonder would they try outbid rte for the championship

Apart from the 3 amigos you mentioned above i think it generally is positive and rightly so- Hurling punditry usually positive & informative, Radio coverage generally positive rte, newstalk and programmes like geansai , thank gaa it friday, toughest trade , upfor the match, the championship preview are generally positive . In fairness there can be fair bit of negativity on this forum, yeah could be better but there is negative punditry in soccer and rugby too , prefer myself to focus on watching the skills of the games rather than worrying about tactics

On a positive note im very glad cats v waterford in thurles - just over an hour away from me so im heading €60 for stand for me, the da and 2 kids great value plus kids get puck around on pitch after the game --happy days, was in croke park for the semi (coz we were in minor) amazing game twas

As far as the tennis goes, I take my hat off to any player who's described by the commentators as being "better on grass". Always found it affects the old hand/eye co-ordination myself!

Two All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Finals this weekend. Two of the biggest sports events of the year. And yet you've guessed it. RTE 6.01 News and Sport hasn't given either game a single mention so far (less than 24 hours to go now).

6.01 Monday - no mention of either match
6.01 Tuesday - no mention of either match
6.01 Wednesday - no mention of either match
6.01 Thursday - no mention of either match
6.01 Friday - no mention of either match

Last week 6.01 ignored the All-Ireland Football Quarter-Finals, this week it's the turn of the All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Finals.

The fact that the Olympic Games are on at the moment is absolutely no excuse for failing to provide for hurling or football supporters as well. Time and resources are not an issue. They have plenty of both when it suits them. Fair play. That's all we're asking for. We pay our licence fee too.

Sunday 14 August
All-Ireland SHC semi-final
Tipperary v Galway, Croke Park, 3.30pm - RTE & Sky
All-Ireland MHC semi-final
Tipperary v Galway, Croke Park, 1.30pm - TG4
Saturday 13 August
All-Ireland SHC semi-final replay
Kilkenny v Waterford, Semple Stadium, 6.45pm - RTE & Sky

My understanding was that 14 championship games and replays if any was to be televised by sky, the remainder and replays if any was to be televised by RTE, so why was the Connaught final a "Sky only job".

What more can be said, perhaps there is nothing further to add, RTE can only report on the new's that they get, if any. A single mention for the sake of is not an option, now that sky have their foot in the door perhaps they might contribute something.

RTE are showing the game live on tv and radio. Hardly ignoring it !

The Connacht final wasn't on sky rte had the rights to it. The could have sent a reporter down to the competing counties the normally do

I understand all of that fully, but the point I am making is, 1. RTE had the sole right to televise live the WD/KK game last Sunday, they also have the sole right to televise the replay this evening, in my view the agreement is being flexed by allowing sky to televise the "REPLAY" as well. 2. Sundays game is also being televised live by the same two TV networks, in my opinion that's flexing the agreement also.
Getting back to my point if RTE had the television rights to the Connaught final they would have honoured that right, if for some reason they couldn't honour it then why wasn't sky given the game (by the gaa powers that be) or is sky allowed to pick and choose, after all they were given and accepted the second bite of the cherry in televising the WD/KK replay, they weren't rattling the gates to televise the Connaught final as far as I'm aware.

As far as I know the commentators are all over there. You have to be to properly commentate.

Interviewers also have to be out there.

I think the presenters and analysts are just in the regular RTE studio. RTE don't pull a BBC on it and send everyone out.
