Gotta hand it to Wexford, when things are going well they come out in their droves. Strong Wexford and Cork teams are adding a serious buzz to this years championship. Must have been 40,000 Wexford fans in Croke Park as a percentage of the counties population I don't think anyone can match that. Hopefully the heads won't drop now and we'll see an massive gang of yellow bellies in cork for the Quarter finals.

I would say the attendance at the 1961 Munster hurling final between Tipperary and Cork has not been exceeded. . A huge recorded crowd of over 62,000 was at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

Cork were not going well in the late '50s. However, Cork supporters were enthused by their team's display in the 1960 final when Tipp beat Cork 4.13 to 4.11 in an absolute downpour. That game was recorded as a classic and the toughest game of hurling ever played. Cork supporters turned up in their thousands for the 1961 final but the Cork team never got going in that game.

At that '61 final all the gates were broken down and thousands more got in for free. It probably was the scariest of occasions for people standing on the terraces as the crowds swayed for hours. It is a fact that there were people there who never again attended a game after the nightmare of spending hours trying to stay standing.

Micheál Ó hÉithir in his broadcasting box announced over the radio that he had no idea whether or not the box would stay standing owing to the crowds forced up against the box.

So 62,000 + was recorded for the 61 final. However, one can confidently say many thousands more gained entry through the dislodged gates.

Id agree, Ive been in Tullamore a good few times and that's by far the biggest crowd. The stand was completlf full and terrace was wedged aswell, that accounts for 19K and there was a few behind the far goals aswell. I couldn't believe the figure when I heard it. Definatly a bit of trimming done there.

18k was terrible for the connaught final. Seemed like a small rossie crowd went.

Great crowds in munster for the hurling.

What's expected at the leinster football final this weekend?

Pearse Stadium is an awful place to get to and out of. The other side of Galway for Rossies and Galway already has terrible traffic problems - a real turn off. Would have been 25,000 if it was in the Hyde - much easier to get to even for Galway fans

Agree with you there. The Rossies usually have good support but from the Rossies I spoke to they just did not believe they would win. A good few I know did not travel. Obviously those who did travel got more excited and noisier as the game progressed. I certainly would have done so if I was a Ros fan. Obviously am very disappointed with the result but don't begrudge them. Hope they can win their q/f.

Thurles was supposed to be a sell out but isn't the capacity meant to be 53,000? The leaves a good few space with an attendance of 45,558. I don't know how you'd squeeze in another 7,500 people in to last Sunday's crowd.

Not sure but I heard that the capacity of Thurles was reduced to 46000. How they ever got 55 k in there I ll never know.

Great to see partly because in the Indpendent in the buid up to the Leinster Hurling final one of the main GAA stories that was written was predicting that for the first time since 1997 the hurling attendance would beat the attendance at the football final. To be honest it was really pathetic article as the writer was almost wetting himself at the propspect of the hurling fnal having a bigger attendance.

i won't mention the writers name because this probably wont be posted if it does bt great to see his piece provig to be complete nonsense.

I wouldn't get too worked up about that article. The Leinster hurling final attendances have been really poor in recent years with the football sometimes attracting close to 3 times the crowd. It was news worthy enough that there was even potential for the hurling to have more.

Here's a few more crowds from the weekend -

Carlow Monaghan 6,124
Tipp Armagh - 6,823
Tyrone Down 31,912

Good crowd for the leinster final obviously helped by the hope Kildare could trouble the dubs. There will no doubt be a much smaller crowd next year as they lift 8 in a row. Best case scenario is Kildare v Dublin again but if Kildare are the same side as the dubs the attendance will be lower for the final.

Still though good crowds this year and they're about to get much bigger.
