Exactly galwayford, the GAA will never get fair play while Ryle Nugent is head of sport in RTE. His first love is Rugby. I have no problem with that. Rugby is my second sport after GAA. But I do have a problem with Ryle Nugent's apparant bias against GAA in his professional capacity as head of Sports in RTE. If he was head of sports in an independent Channel fair enough he can be as selective as he/they want to be in choosing their target market. however since we partly pay his salary through the TV licence fee, should the GAA not get at least a commensuarte degree of promotion as Rugby does in RTE?

There certainly is demand for that game live. RTE never showed womens rugby until team was successful and enough people protested and contacted RTE about showing games. They started streaming some games and found there was enough interest to show them on tv

And Ryle Nugent makes every decision RTE sport has to....
If Ryle Nugent was such a rugby man through and through then why then does RTE show so little live rugby any more and as of next year will have even less.
They don't show pro12, don't show European cup. Don't show European cup highlights. Wont be showing 6 Nations next year as that will be on TV3. They show 2 maybe 3 senior club games.

Where is their an actual bias? GAA gets way more coverage. Look at the amount of hurling and gaelic shown. Look at all the GAA lifestyle programmes like thank gaa its Friday etc etc. Up for the match on all Ireland final weekends. etc

Fair points you make Ormondbannerman. My opinion was influenced by the huge coverage that Rugby gets at this time of the year, particularly by TV adds promoting the Europen Cup and the Six Nations. Equally the GAA does get fair coverage especially during the summer in the latter stages of the championship.
On March the 18th I will be shouting against one team in white at 5pm and shouting for the other team in white at 7pm.

The 6 Nations are on RTE at the moment. Wall to wall coverage. So what you are saying is basically nonsense. On RTE, "6 Nations rugby the greatest etc etc etc" as the advert goes.

I see you've combined two and neglected to mention tg4's rugby coverage for some reason.

As he mentioned 5 league games I think it's 4 channels he has combined. It's only appropriate, it would be a shame if there was any genuine reasoned discussion on this thread at this late stage!

yep 5 games 3 on eir and 2 on tg4 one deferred plus the RTE highlights
plenty of rugby on as well with pro 12 on s4c sky and tg4,-none on rte though
sky has super rugby plus top 14 , bt has aviva prmiership

and the geansai is back next week

just making the point there is plenty gaa coverage as well as rugby - but thats lost on some

the real question i have to ask is can hurling survive the football onslaught -i think the super 8 is great idea but a similar one needed for hurling

"Next year, there will be five hurling Championship games in July and August, but 19 in football. so hurling will really be under pressure or course some on this site are more interested in dissing rugby rather than hurling

Sadly not Janesboro as I only deal in facts. Ryle Nugent has confirmed it is a fact that the reason RTE show these games is not due to any great public interest - despite the claims of the RTE/rugby cheerleaders on here - but because it is part of a deal between the IRFU and RTE to maximise exposure of the sport. As far as I know this is the only live sport broadcast by RTE not due to viewer interest but to promote the sport/business. Does that suggest to you that RTEs content does not show a preference for rugby over every other sport?

no it suggests to me the the irfu would only give them the games if they showed the womens and under 20s. the gaa could do same if they wish -

so are you saying A- RTE are showing it because its the only way they they can show the mens games OR
B - nothing to do with mens games and they are only showing it to promote rugby over gaa

which one is it ?

Will rte be showing womens rugby next year - or will it be in tv3

i also note you have not come up with one single suggestion to improve coverage e.g - a midweek camogie/ladies football show OR
2 - a return of the game on monday show from the 90s , 1.5 hour highlight show covering qualifiers, ring rackard meagher cups (which get little time onsunday game) and , camogie
maybe youd have to move the monday gaa show on tg4 which in fairness covers minors and 21s very well
3 - look at doing a highlights show for divs 3 and 4 of the football league

or maybe something like
--Press releases with good news stories, look at my club at your club -plenty of them there
e.g. how gaa is helping kids stay fit, the excellent facilities, funding announcements.
--GAA send their own reporters and cameras to events i.e. media days and send them to all the tv stations.
--Maybe do a midweek highlights show (possibly focussing on games not covered by Sunday Game, Ladies football, camogie, underage) -from sunday to saturday there aint any live games to report or talk about. Maybe a second captains style GAA show. If need be GAA could commission it . HAve a referee on it to explain decisions.
Yes it would cost money but it would expose more people /kids to GAA.
--Some sort of kids TV programme with a GAA theme.

id also look at where possible staging as many camogie /ladies football double headers with the mens game - did it for camogie semis last year ,

however the lack of suggestions really shows where priorities lie

RTE partly justify showing women's rugby by saying the world cup is on in Ireland this year and so it deserves more exposure. The IRFU are staging that competition in UCD, some university ground in Belfast, and the final is in 18000 capacity Kingspan Stadium Belfast. Not a single game in Cork, Galway or even 'the home of rugby' Limerick. It looks to me RTE are more interested in promoting the game than the IRFU! The fact remains RTE show a bias to rugby above all other sports, you have convinced yourself it is because the IRFU are better at negotiating than all others, many believe it is because RTEs decision makers have a preference for the sport they grew up part of.
As for ideas I have provided many. I would have loved a programme on the 2014 Connacht junior football final between the islanders of Achill and Aran as it was a great story about much more than football but alas it was ignored. There should definitely be greater coverage of the 3 female team sports that have significant participation numbers also.
As for having ladies football/football double headers I don't think it works as they are 2 separate organisations so there is no way of determining how gate receipts are split. Also whilst a €40 ticket for a mens hurling semifinal is reasonable, it may be considered a little expensive for a camogie semifinal. In any case ladies football and camogie get terrific attendances and TV audiences when properly advertised, it's just a pity that RTE largely ignore them.

Runs on different model, but id have preferred if they spread the games, and played they final in the aviva, give the tickets away if you need to to fill the stadium

The fact remains RTE show a bias to rugby above all other sports,
if thats the case how come next year they wont show hardly any rugby next year - they dont even outbid tg4 for pro12 or champs cup games. (
you have convinced yourself it is because the IRFU are better at negotiating
no i havce convinced myself because rte show a lot more gaa than rugby , they do way way more gaa on radio - and do a lot more gaa related programmes outside of live coverage
As for ideas I have provided many.
Show us them - throw up the posts

I would have loved a programme on the 2014 Connacht junior football final between the islanders of Achill and Aran as it was a great story about much more than football but alas it was ignored.
Great idea would make fantastic programme - there was a thread about it here - somebody suggested playing the final in inisturk - been lucky to have pucked about on all three pitches - incredibly scenic- recommend any body to go there the boats trips alone make it worth the effort
There should definitely be greater coverage of the 3 female team sports that have significant participation numbers also.
Ladies football is very well covered by tg4, id like more camogie as well and soccer

As for having ladies football/football double headers I don't think it works as they are 2 separate organisations so there is no way of determining how gate receipts are split. -you might get over this if they were run by the one body like rugby is, would give gaa a bargaining chip
Also whilst a €40 ticket for a mens hurling semifinal is reasonable, it may be considered a little expensive for a camogie semifinal.
Probably is but then again you could say that €40 is expensive for minor hurling/football semis . I was thinking more earlier round games to be honest, but putting a camogie semi with an all ireland semi- or even a ring/meagher/rackard game with an all ireland semi- id be ok with that

Comparing the national broadcaster RTE's blanket coverage of rugby to GAA coverage on the Irish language channel TG4 is a far cry from comparing like with like.
