I'd be quite surprised if Dublin topped the division. There'll be a lot of players used in this league campaign that haven't been seen before imo.

I would agree but with a condition. Monaghan are as good as anyone until they get to Croke park. Then they go the way Cork go. seanfinn (Monaghan) - Posts: 360 - 23/01/2017 11:25:30 1948025 Link 0 |
Don't be getting wound up by this nonsense, making an a case for Monaghan's relegation prospects because of their Croke Park form needs to be taken with a pinch of salt (or something even more bitter). WTF has CP to do with the league So we can do well until we get to CP and we don't have to play there, yet this is a reason why we will be relegated ??? mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1042 - 23/01/2017 12:12:46 1948048 Link 0 |
We won twice in Croker in 2014. The Donegal final and the wash-out against Kildare!

That's the way it would end up if league was played at championship competitive level but it's not and the league is harder to predict. For example Cavan have developed into a good league team, few would have tipped them to reach division one but now there it shouldn't shock anyone if they stay up. Mayo on the other scale of things a top three championship team have found themselves in relegation battles and if they keep doing that one year they will eventually get relegated. Dublin will lift the league again, with Mayo, Tyrone and Kerry all performing well. My guess is relegation will be between Roscommon, Donegal and Cavan. Monaghan doing enough to stay up. Donegal have young talent for sure, but many of these players still have to prove themselves at senior level. The players that have left the squad featured a lot more last year than the young guns coming through, that tell's its own story. I'm also not convinced by the current Donegal management. point taken but I would still estimate that whatever players Gavin uses will be well motivated, well conditioned and posses enough skill and power to win enough points to top the division. Not saying that they will "win" the league but they will top the division , which in my book equates to "winning" the league. I don't believe in this nonsense of having a league semi-final or final. It's a league and as such whoever finishes top should automatically be declared winner.

No League Semis this year so the top counties can't afford to drop many points. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2752 - 24/01/2017 10:35:30 1948345 Link 0 |
Agree that there shouldn't be league playoffs. Dublin will be decent throughout the league but I don't we'll see as much of the established players until later in the spring. There'll be chances to get points off of Dublin early in the league as there might well be similar looking teams lining out that we've seen in the O'Byrne Cup. Cavan have a great chance of taking Dublin's scalp in the first game I think, although I'm not sure what their prep has been like. It's hard to know really how Cavan are going. We tried a lot of new players in the McKenna Cup and some of them did well but when faced with top quality forwards that came on against us for UUj we struggled to contain them. It was hard to see a discernible style or pattern to the play and It's hard to tell what the team line-up will be for the league. We have lost a few really big names since last year. david Givney,Eugene Keating, Cian Mackey, fergal Flanagan, and Gearoid McKiernan (who is currently injured). There is also a doubt about our regular goalkeeper (Galligan) as he is also currently injured and took no part in McKenna cup. So it really is impossible to know how they will go or what team will line out. McKiernan and Givney especially will be missed against the top teams.

If anyone has been watching Tyrone this year I don't see where we are going to get the points to stay up never mind challenge for league honours. 12 points against Cavan and 14 points against Fermanagh No goals and no goals created. We have not changed a thing from last year still playing a negative boring brand of football which was our downfall last year against Mayo. It wont be any big surprise to see Derry win on Saturday night We need a change of direction and this management seen unwilling/incapable of making the changes required. rahillyman (Tyrone) - Posts: 314 - 24/01/2017 13:00:32 1948388 Link 0 |
Nearly sure I heard on the radio that Cavan v Dublin game is sold out, is that correct? clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 24/01/2017 13:35:36 1948398 Link 0 |
Had been saying that myself thinking wed come into the game with serious momentum behind us. As it turns out, we exited the mckenna cup early (not sure if this was management's intention) which gives us 2 clear weeks to prepare for the league opener. Hard to know whether that'll stand to us or not, but as outlined above, the number of absentees is of huge concern. My biggest worry is that we bust a gut against Dublin, Mayo, Kerry but come up short, then put in flat performances against Ros or Monaghan who we should be looking to peak against. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 4979 - 24/01/2017 13:46:42 1948402 Link 0 |
