Joe Canning for Hurler of the Year

Replying To Cockney_Cat:  "The All Stars and Hurler of the Year are a side show. They are not won on the field of play; they are decided by a committee who are being both subjective and objective. Although they probably mean a lot to most winners.

You're being a bit paranoid mentioning "begrudgers". Very few, if any, dispute Galway were worthy winners; and most fans were happy for Galway to win it. You're attack on Tiobraid is unfair, he was disputing Joe Canning being chosen Hurler of the Year; which is open to debate.

Finally, you've waited 30 years to win another All-Ireland, so to say "Begrudgers... just have to suck it up" is cheap; show a bit of class; you're a great hurling county."
Thanks for the support! Most Tipp people thought Callanan should've gotten it last year but for me Maher was the standout player last year by a distance and Barron likewise this year, who I still expect will get it. As someone who went to a lot of games this year including a few Leinster games I'm baffled by Cannings inclusion but that's my opinion
Unfortunately the All Stars and Players of the Year are ridiculously untransparent so we will have to wait and see. I backed Barron and a McCarthy after the q finals and I think both have done enough to win the awards

I'd say most years they get it right. I've no complaints if Canning doesn't win it as the other two guys are fully deserving too but after winning the League, Leinster, and the All Ireland the odds are usually in favor of someone from that team.

Is the player of the year not decided by votes from fellow players, with the All-Stars selected by the media and journalist panel?

That's my understanding but there's no transparency. We don't know who the journalists are or what players vote?
Do you have 25 votes from each county or does each county vote for one player? i.e if Tipp had 13 voting for Barron and 12 for Canning for example, is tipp's vote for Barron or is everyone's vote counted in the overall vote?
It's always a big mystery to me anyway!

well bud there was me thinking you weren't a Galway fan, but now I see your motivation for wanting Barron to be player of the year. You have him backed. First rule of gambling is only back what you can afford to lose and in this instance I hope you only had a small wager.

As far as I know, it's a vote per player. But then I don't know if all panels vote, or only those in the Liam McCarthy. It could do with some clarification alright!

Ah don't worry my gambling is always only the price of a pint or two!
It is a shame that there isn't more transparency though. Can counties vote for their own players? I'd like to see no shortlist apart from all 45 who were nominated and a breakdown published after it.

I agree transparency is very important. I said it over and over again JC instrumental in Galway winning the league, Linester, and All Ireland. As previous posters said if JC dose not get player of the year he wont loose any sleep.

More transparency would be nice. Maybe an award for Tier 2 players next year too.

I find it strange that you are "baffled" by Cannings inclusion. The Tipperary game alone should be enough to eliminate any "bafflement" if that's a word. Too bad assists aren't a statistic in hurling like points and goals as I guarantee Canning would be at or near the top every year as well as in scoring.

As I said earlier his own clubmate felt he should've been taken off at half time in that game. Watch the game back again and you' see he hurled poorly for the vast majority of that game. Granted his last 10 mins was certainly some of the best hurling played by anyone this year without a shadow of a doubt. Don't buy into all the talks of assists either. The two McGraths for Tipp set up numerous goals and goals chances this year for example. Brick Walsh has made a career out of it the last number of years also.

Jamie Barron was taken off in the biggest game of the year with his direct opponent getting man of the match yet you feel he should win the award. Some say he was sick but Barron said himself he was fine. Canning provided big moments at the most crucial times and that's what seperate great hurlers from very good ones.

Jamie Barron along with Kevin Moran dragged Waterford back into the game after a slow start. Between scores and frees won he, he was directly involved in at least 4 points. David Burke was substituted 3-4 mins after Barron in the biggest game of the year so your point doesn't make any sense. While I'm not denying Burke was man of the match. Barron's performance was certainly an 8/10. Burke played in a free kind of role so he wasn't directly marking Barron. I don't think any Galway man would say Barron had a poor final. Personally, I would have him in the top 5/6 performers and looking at the player ratings from a few papers only Burke was ahead of him and 4/5 more got the same rating. This being in arguably his quietest game all year, which says something about the year he had.

People see what they want to see I suppose. Barron was within 2 yards of Burke for both of his second half points but completely lost him as the ball broke giving away 2 very easy scores. The reason it looked like Burke had a free role is because he wasn't being picked up by the man who should have been picking him up. Barron is a fine hurler but completely went out of the game in the 2nd half. And Burke went off due to injury rather than a tactical substitution.
I hope you told that lad at the semi-final that taking off Canning at halftime would not have been very sensible?

I just watched the first half of Galway-Tipp on YouTube and you're right Canning wasn't very good and in fact was reckless even with a yellow card BUT to tell you the truth nobody really stood out other than maybe Seamus Callinan and Conor Whelan. That first half was extremely TENSE and while some players on both teams had nice flashes it was a messy enough half of hurling. Crowding around the ball and lots of pulling and dragging but very TENSE. Even Tipps goal was nothing to brag about as it should have been cleared easily.

Some observations:

1. Wet field. Canning had a towel drying off his hurley for that first sideline cut.
2. Wind was in Tipps favor.
3. The announcers said Canning was coming back from an injury and was marked by Tipps best defender.

All that being said everyone plays on the same field but honestly nobody was outstanding in that first half.

Just watched the first half again and what a half of hurling Barron had and he was still quiet by his own standards! By my rough calculations he had more possessions than any other player and more than Burke and canning combined. I'm 100% sure he hashirler of the year sewn up

100% Sure??? I hope you're not a betting man. I'm more 60/40 in Cannings favor partially due to Moran taking votes away from Barron.
