Said by a man that hasn't watched down play in years.

He is a bit late to the party with his observations anyway. Sure we have been getting a diet of this since the Ulster teams came on strong in the early 00's and as someone else pointed out it is probably less relevant than ever today as the majority of teams in the country set up tactically now. Reading the article it sounds that the guy is a bit distant from the game now but likes his opinion to be heard but sure like ar$eholes............... So it wasn't man on man football so? I don't think Tyrone supporters will mind me saying that they play an excellent defensive system but still have managed to average something like 24 points per game this championship season. Scoring highly does not mean you don't get men behind the ball when defending. Roscommon would not have won the Connacht championship if the played man on man 15 v 15 football. Can't understand why Roscommon supporters are taking this is an insult as they played with a terrific balance of defence and attack which isn't an easy thing to get right as they know well from their 2016 championship exploits.

I can't believe people are complaining about the football championship this year, we have seen some fantastic matches and Dublin, Kerry and Tyrone have been shooting the lights out. The game is evolving and we can see already that teams are getting better at beating the blanket defence. We have had more high fielding with the introduction of the mark. We could be in for some potential crackers at the business end of the championship e.g. Dublin v Tyrone Green_Gold (Donegal) - Posts: 1870 - 17/07/2017 09:29:20 2017878 Link 1 |
Completely agree. The scores Tyrone, Dublin and Kerry are putting up are incredible and scoring averages in general must be way up on previous years so the game is in a pretty good place. Alot of the qualifier games have been really exciting if not always high on quality but with 5 of the 9 Ulster teams still standing alot of people will probably deny that it has been an enjoyable championship so far.

I think they are maybe taking this badly as they have been fed a media diet for year of 'this approach is bad', 'puke football' etc rather than appreciating it for what it is i.e. tactical nous.

Hard to believe it's 2017 and people are still bleating the trite Ulster football generalisations as if it's some sort of reasoned hot take. Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12103 - 17/07/2017 10:27:24 2017924 Link 0 |
There is a great irony in posters complaining about Willie giving an opinion without watching all the games, when most commenting here clearly didn't listen to his full interview. He criticised Kildare for their negative approach in the league final but nobody comments on that. The main reason he was on the show was to talk about his horses, it is a sorry state of affairs if a lad who played in an All-Ireland final 19 years ago is not entitled to have an opinion on the game any more. The good news for Willie, the lads in the crowd at last years Ulster final and the rest of us that love the game is that the days of negative football look to be coming to an end. I realise 95% of your posts are Ulster related. Such is your obsession you like you keep in touch by visiting our forum . I will be the first to admit I hate when teams put 14 behind the ball- I agree with you there but to think it's ending is simply false . Kerry , Galway , Tyrone all play the blanket defense . There are all different versions . Tyrone will still clock up 20+ points a match . Look at the beautiful Down yesterday - tried to play it but simply hadn't a clue. I thinl you may be Kevin Cassidy . People shouldn't isolate one province . It's nasty and unfair . TheRightStuff (Donegal) - Posts: 1688 - 17/07/2017 11:09:47 2017964 Link 0 |
Bang on - I think rather than the tactical approach coming to an end people have become used to it and are beginning to appreciate it for what it is. Probably helps that Ulster teams are no longer to the fore. That is where I think the issue is with the comments. Maybe the man did come on to talk about his horses, and fair enough, but rather than roll out an old cliché he would maybe have been better sticking to the horses. Yes people are entitled to their opinions but I am not even sure this is even his opinion.

I agree with much of that other than the silly jibes. As long as the ball is always being contested I don't care what system is being used, allowing the opposing team to jog forward 70 metres with no tackle as the opposition retreat is the horrible rubbish most people detest. I also agree about attacks on individual provinces. For years people have been saying certain provincial titles are worthless and teams a joke because the champions were not fully tested. As not 1 of the 4 provincial winners has had a close game it looks like we won't have any such insults this year! I would have as little respect for anyone who claimed Ulster was useless this year and the other 8 teams a joke for not challenging Tyrone as those who have said the same about Munster Leinster or Connacht teams in the past. If people refuse to think for themselves, what can you do?

Ulster football is overrated. Carlow rated 10th in Leinster had Monaghan on the ropes on saturday night until they got the square ball goal late on. Even our Wicklow who have never won a Leinster and wont be winning one soon dumped 3 Ulster teams namely Down Cavan and Fermanagh out in one year of the qualifiers not so long ago. kikfada (Louth) - Posts: 2091 - 17/07/2017 12:17:43 2018037 Link 0 |
I can easily understand parents having differing allegiances but siblings would generally be members of the same club team and so lean towards a common county team - unless they align with one of their parents I suppose. Strange that an explanation didn't come from kk/Laois or was he playing handball with his nieces up in Tyrone and grab a quick use of his other brother in law's iPad?!

I explained it perfectly clearly above. My brother's laptop is out of order, he lives a mile away from me. He recently joined Hoganstand. I brought the laptop down to his house and was showing my nephew a few videos on it etc and playing hurling with him also. My brother and i had been posting on hoganstand. I forgot to log him out. I live on a 3 county border in Laois bordering Carlow and Kilkenny. My dad is KK, my mam Laois. We played football in a club in Laois. We attended a lot of Laois and KK matches. My brother is more into KK and his wife is from there. He tends to support them more. Quite frankly you don't even deserve such an indepth explanation as all your replies are snide remarks and quips about my nephew in your last report. You have an awful fascination with me!! Wouldn't it be more appropriate for you this morning enjoy your Ulster final victory. Or are the shoulder chips causing you too much pain?? Thanks GameofTyrones. Well done on a great performance yesterday and i wish ye the very best in the latter stages. Laois and Tyrone have a great mutual respect going back to the minor finals of 1997 and 1998. P.s. Off topic but what was said in RTE about the late Michaela Harte (RIP) that caused the rift? It's something i missed out on at the time. Laois76 (Laois) - Posts: 1270 - 17/07/2017 13:52:39 2018138 Link 27 |
Yeah it certainly is not at the level it once was but with that fall from Grace we are looking at 5 of the last 12 teams in this years competition hailing from the province, or put another way given that 8 of those teams were there by way of provincial championships we are looking at 3 of the 4 teams that have navigated the All Ireland qualifiers coming from the province. it is probably a good job that the All Ireland is not done by way of open draw as it would be Ulster heavy in the latter stages every year with Dublin or Kerry winning it :)

There's no need to get so defensive. I was just a bit confused by the two separate replies. Apologies if offended either of you.

No. Tyrone and Armagh did not play direct football in the 00s. You might remember it that way when you see what we have now, but it's not true.
