Spillane spot on with his selections in truth, current Dublin crop maybe Athlete's but certainly would not grace any of the lads noted in Spillane's team! Ciarrai Abu (Overseas) - Posts: 1050 - 18/12/2015 16:22:08 1813534 Link 0 |
I think the team he picked is pretty good considering that it is just his opinion. I would say that the present Dublin team contain some excellent footballers and might I add that the first defender that I would pick out of the present Dub team is Philly. Now there is no comparision between the standard when Kerry was competing against Tyrone with what is now on offer. The present Kerry team would not be able to compete with their earlier team while, Donegal although good were nowhere near the standard of that Tyrone team. I would put the present CB of the Dublin team ahead of any of the nominations for that position and the likes of Darren Fay was away above most of what was mentioned. McMahon of Tyrone was also better than most of the FB's mentioned and was the only one who could master 'Big Donaghy' in his prime- a feat in itself! browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 18/12/2015 16:35:56 1813537 Link 1 |
For me Fay was by far the best full back of any of the names that are mentioned here but seeing as the team is based on last 15 seasons he does not deserve his place on this team. bdbuddah (Meath) - Posts: 1347 - 18/12/2015 18:37:26 1813547 Link 0 |
Spillane has picked a good team but he gave himself a hard job. It is always difficult comparing players from different times but in this case it is more so. Football is almost a different sport now. In 2000 pretty much all 6 players from no. 10 to no. 15 played in traditional forward roles (or with maybe 1 forward dropping back to play as an extra midfielder). Now many teams drop half of their forwards back to defensive roles (or in Donegal's case 5 or 6!) meaning playing as a defender is so different than back in 2000, there is just much more cover. In some ways it is harder than ever to play as a forward nowadays with the fact that forwards are usually outnumbered but in other ways it is easier than ever as referees usually give a free for a defender putting in a fair hard tackle. bdbuddah (Meath) - Posts: 1347 - 18/12/2015 19:08:39 1813551 Link 0 |

McGuinness may be a good manager, however I would not be too impressed by the way he ditched one of his best players. I also think that he was lucky with his AI and of course you play for your luck (they were unlucky against Kerry)- the Dubs missed some very easy goal chances when cruising in the match. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 19/12/2015 14:02:15 1813585 Link 1 |
Sorry Browncows, I was referring more to Splianne's lack of consistency as a pundit/writer instead of JMcG virtues as a coach. Curlew66 (Roscommon) - Posts: 506 - 19/12/2015 15:05:56 1813589 Link 0 |
Karl Lacey and Paul Flynn should definitely be in that team. uibhfhaili1986 (Offaly) - Posts: 1296 - 19/12/2015 19:34:21 1813620 Link 0 |

Honest question where would you put Lacey corner back ? Or would you think centre back ? uibhfhaili1986 (Offaly) - Posts: 1296 - 21/12/2015 11:08:14 1813764 Link 0 |
Surely Spillane will change this team now, at least 4 more Dubs should be on the team. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 13/12/2016 13:29:46 1939888 Link 0 |
That statement is so bizarre...Flynn has been extremely average over the last two years. Don't get me wrong he's a very good player and his medals/all stars back that up but trying to mention him in the same breath as Declan O sullivan and Dooher...you're having a laugh

Which 4? If anyone has put their hand up for inclusion over the last 12 months, it's Lee Keegan, but I wouldn't be able to find room for him on Spillane's team. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5012 - 13/12/2016 14:45:17 1939905 Link 0 |

You could make an argument for Flynn at 12 and brogan at 15. Neither are necessarily better than the two they'd be replacing though. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 13/12/2016 15:54:50 1939921 Link 0 |
