You could have misinterpreted the 'objectivity' there, Killarney? Kiloughter comes across on this forum as Galway's quintessential 'football man'. A few of those people couldn't take 100% enjoyment from the hurling success in recent weeks. I'm not saying Kiloughter was one of those for a moment. What I'm saying, is that on Galway football matters, he's a glass half full guy, on hurling a glass half empty. He has majored on the mental weakness of the Galway hurler & Mayo footballer for years, on occasion seeming to hint that there was just something better in the top six inches of the 'Galway footballer'. He was certainly a subscriber to the Sam would come before Liam brigade in Galway, after both the '12 & '15 final losses. Notable that he introduced Jamie Barron as 'the dual player' in his commendation too!

Good detective work there Pope. I am nearly scared to ask your thoughts on my default viewpoints.

Yes i am a dual supporter. Pity more Galway folk were not. The fact Barron plays football has nothing to do with me giving him a slight nod for POTY. Completely separate issues in fairness and if one cannot be objective on these things what is the point. As for if i am more football than hurling so what. At least i follow both and yes i do sometimes get miffed about a small element of the Galway 'hurling only' crew who don't see the big picture. On the flip side there are many many decent hurling folk who have been supporting the code for many years and the same folk you see at any type of club game. The glass half full vis a vis glass half empty argument i certainly would not entertain. When i contributed a few yrs ago on some of the hurling threads some posters just did not want to see the reality if it differed from their only rose tinted opinion.

Can't understand how Moran got a nomination and the likes of David Burke & Gearoid Mcinnerney did not. That said for me it has to be Canning if only for his herculean effort against Tipp in the semi.High time Joe got it. Condorman (Dublin) - Posts: 983 - 22/09/2017 15:23:00 2049369 Link 1 |
This will be the second year in a row that the Sunday Game analysts will have failed to have even mentioned the subsequent Hurler of the Year in their discussions on Sunday Game Hurler of the Year. Last year Austin Gleeson was not even mentioned. This year McInerney was the only one mentioned. Hurling1Guru1 (Galway) - Posts: 244 - 25/09/2017 13:19:16 2050295 Link 0 |
I believe Joe Canning should win it over Barron and Moran. Firstly Canning has been outstanding taking frees and sideline cuts all year under pressure. Secondly the oppositions game plan vs Galway always starts with stopping Canning. Thirdly Canning sets the table for easy scores for the other players. His passing is maybe his strongest suit. Fourth I'd say no other player plays under more pressure to win than him. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2100 - 25/09/2017 21:15:31 2050484 Link 0 |
to be honest if he gets it joe will know deep down that he did not deserve the award,it will be like when ryan giggs got the player of the yr in his last yr playing football.total joke,if he gets it barron is ur man. whatsleftref (Limerick) - Posts: 28 - 25/09/2017 21:36:04 2050490 Link 2 |
You forgot to mention the 5th reason..you're from Galway ;) Joking aside if Joe gets it he will have earned it. Personally i'd have Baron a little ahead but would be happy to see Joe get it. God knows the amount of joy Joe has brought to all hurling followers since his minor days as a 15 year old in 2004. Laois76 (Laois) - Posts: 1270 - 25/09/2017 23:15:28 2050522 Link 10 |
Nonsense. JC had a hugely influential championship for Galway. JB was fantastic also and probably does deserve it SLIGHTLY more. But comparison with the Giggs award is laughable.

Canning had a very average year. Shouldn't have been one of the nominations. icehonesty (Wexford) - Posts: 2550 - 26/09/2017 08:54:10 2050543 Link 1 |
Canning fully deserves the award, look at the Tipp game, only for Joe they would be champs today suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1662 - 26/09/2017 10:45:09 2050572 Link 1 |

Media had a big influence. Joe is a great hurler, glad he won an All Ireland medal. I think Barron was more consistent overall.

An average year? Maybe by Cannings own standards. Joe has set the bar so high in previous years that 8-10 points per game is only average. Too bad there isn't a stat for ASSISTS I know Canning would lead in that too as he is always setting up others for easy scores.

Man of the match for performance in one particular game Player of the Year for performance throughout the year, in particular the Championship (in the world of the GAA) Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1410 - 26/09/2017 12:02:32 2050602 Link 0 |
I don't think anyone thinks Joe or anyone should win an award based on just one game but I think he just highlighted that particular game due to the way Canning scored the last 4 or 5 points when Galway needed them most. He stepped up when he was needed most. In the rest of the games they weren't under any serious threat of losing so he mostly set up others with easy scores.

I can't believe there are Galway fans posting on this thread in anger and frustration. I couldn't care less if Galway get no all-stars or no nominations even. Sure didn't Austin Gleeson win HOTY last year on the basis of a few flashy points in an otherwise awful performance against Kilkenny. Galway have what we want and that's Liam. Begrudgers (not mentioning any names "Tiobraid") just have to suck it up. Mailman98 (Galway) - Posts: 318 - 27/09/2017 14:40:29 2051036 Link 1 |
The All Stars and Hurler of the Year are a side show. They are not won on the field of play; they are decided by a committee who are being both subjective and objective. Although they probably mean a lot to most winners. You're being a bit paranoid mentioning "begrudgers". Very few, if any, dispute Galway were worthy winners; and most fans were happy for Galway to win it. You're attack on Tiobraid is unfair, he was disputing Joe Canning being chosen Hurler of the Year; which is open to debate. Finally, you've waited 30 years to win another All-Ireland, so to say "Begrudgers... just have to suck it up" is cheap; show a bit of class; you're a great hurling county.
