Can the GAA survive the Rugby onslaught

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think it's purely down to the nature of the game that the rugby players sing the anthem with more gusto. Sure they're sent out full of caffeine with "manic aggression" in mind. Soccer players etc would be far more relaxed and focussed.

Also the claim that rugby crowds respect the anthem more is bizarre nonsense.

Change the station, read a different article, ignore the topic. Lots of people do the same.

Crudot

Tomsmith here from County Cavan

As the one that started this post to highlight the power that jurno's ( who tend to be from the Haughtey Taughtey side of life) have in Ireland in promoting an non Irish game I feel that this imbalance should be highlighted
If you look at most ruggers fellows in town who are the ???
Most from a certain section of the community who would like a little bit of parsley sprinkled on the spuds at dinner time. Dinner time is usually 7pm for these people not 1pm like the rest of us
But back to the discussion i feel thatour National game is being sidelined by the ruggers and the other exponents of ---------- ie the beautiful game boys
Lets support out own National game and ???? the rest

Cue, has the snooker viewership gone down rapidly over the years because there's a lack of characters playing at a top level? No Hurricane, Bill Werbunik, Kirk Stevens, etc. I know sponsorship deals aren't great at all now. Other than Ronnie and Jimmy White most of them look like really boring lads taking it way too seriously. I used to love watching it but the stroppy heads on many of them now puts me off.

Every single time, at every event.

The viewership peaked in the 80s.I think 17 million tuned into the 85 final with D Taylor beating S Davis 18-17 on the black ball. However, with only a few tv channels, the choices were limited.

Not sure what the current tv figures are but i think Barry Hearn is doing a good job in improving snooker.Where before there were only a small amount of tournaments (8 approx) and only the top 16 made any living, now Hearn has expanded the annual calender to over 20 tournaments worldwide and the top 128 players have a decent chance at earning a living.

The game is huge in China and there are ranking tournaments in Australia,Romania,Germany and 3/4 in China. As well as this,B Hearn has introduced the Home Nations tournaments this year with England,Scotland,Wales and N Ireland now all hosting ranking events with big money on offer.

Last Sunday saw 25 year professional Mark King win his first ever ranking event. In his speech he said hes getting help for compulsive gambling and had to borrow money off his 83 year old dad to even come to Belfast.

It's not a sport for everyone but after the two GAA games and soccer it is my favourite by far.I think it is a great game and although many of the current players look like robots,if you scratch a little below the surface, the characters are still there.

I'm heading to the Masters in London for a week in January where i'll no doubt be entertained by the Ace in the Pack, Jester from Leicester,Thunder from Down Under,Wizzard of Wishaw,Chinese Dragon,Magician and the Rocket.Snooker Loopy!

I don't think there is many on here who have given Kilkenny as much credit for their brilliant consistency over the years. For a man with Tipp blood,i even went as far as to say JJ Delaney was my favourite hurler and believe me my old man isn't too happy with that.Jackie just anotger top player in an era where the cats oozed class all over the field.Tommy,Henry and JJ were the all-time greats, for me.Jackie was a powerhouse, one man wrecking ball of a defender.Another great servant to part ways with his county team.

Great goal and into a packed Killinan End also!I was behind the goal in Pairc Ui Chaoimh in the 1991 drawn Munster final v Cork when Nicky kicked a great equalising late point only for the umpires to unbelievably wave it wide!Thank God there was still one minute left for Pat Fox to get an equaliser, otherwise Tipp wouldnt have been All Ireland champions later that year.

The GAA will survive despite the best efforts of the media, just look at the attendances at last weekends club matches,Rugby would love to have attendances like those, not just what we saw on tg4 but all the other club matches in the Provinces, also the fact that the juvenile players can go along to club matches and stand on the sideline and see their heros close up,how many youngsters last Sunday want to be a Tony Kelly, the local community will keep the GAA going, and this is despite the fact that hardly a week goes by that the late late or Sat night show doesnt have a rugby player on the show,

Exactly. The current saturation rugby coverage will raise GAA standards because Hurling and gaelic football will have to up there game again. Listen its nothing new for us Limerickmen. Its like the rest of Ireland is experiencing rugby as competition for the first time. Weve had it for 100years and over all its been good competition. I found that I learned alot from the rugby guys in the gym and they picked up some ballskills from us. Lots of cross over. There needs to be acceptance that the most athletic young lads will choose pro rugby over gaa. But mark my words standards will rise from the upsurge in rugby.

That's because there's nobody singing it.
the outburst of tension at the end of the anthem has always been a gaa thing on a big championship day

Yeah I thought it was one.
I don't agree with it as i think the club should get a fine.
if you were non club socks or shorts in dublin championship you get a fine.
at inter county if you parade with tracksuit tops on your liable for fines, so playing a match with a top on for starters and it not being the clubs gear surely is not acceptable

The only saturation of rugby I experience is tv and newspaper coverage.
the actual playing of the sport is non existent where I live. I don't think I have ever seen an adult or kid wearing a rugby Jersey in my locality either.
if rte wasn't based where it is, rugby would exist in the same light as cricket does for most of Dublin
