Hold your effin horses there a minute now Jacko. Don't insult us decent Kilflynn people by claiming we are anything to do with that shower in Lixnaw. I don't care what ecclesiastical map arranging has gone on in the past few years Crotta is Kilflynn parish.

Yeah I worked with a lad from Rathcline who had played Hurling for someone over there but as you said yourself those clubs are disbanded. It says on Wolfe Tones website that Hurling was only revived in in the late sixties after a request from the county board and something similiar with Slashers. Have you any further info on that ?

link link There were actually a half dozen camógie clubs in the county in the 1960's. It disappeared without a trace after a few years but I know someone recently enough compiled a history of it but I can't find anything online. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 07/01/2017 15:39:26 1943753 Link 1 |
Was just reading this. A few interesting bits in it about Hurling. It says Granard won the Cavan Senior Hurling in 1954. http://longfordgaa.ie/history/ Jack_Sparrow (Westmeath) - Posts: 1010 - 07/01/2017 16:02:40 1943759 Link 0 |
I think there was a rule brought in Mayo few years ago regarding hurling clubs where parishes would have to amalgamate to form a hurling club which usually meant a team built around a town like Ballina, Castlebar, Belmullet, Westport etc a big problem then is the colour of the jersey and the name of the team, a lot of parishes outside towns refuse point blank on wearing the town colour jersey or using the town name, I know of a rural football club that have majority of players pucking around with the hurley and sliotar before and after football training or playing hurling challenge matches with other people away from the football club. Will they play for the hurling team which has the town name and town football colours? Not a chance, they would rather play soccer that wear the enemy jerseys. Now I am open to correction on whether this rule still is in place or not, we have 7 or 8 hurling clubs and I can't see that number expanding riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 07/01/2017 16:54:55 1943773 Link 0 |
According to the Cavan hurling wiki page Granard actually won it in 1950...someone's telling porkie pies! There doesn't seemed to have been any championship in Longford between 1935 & 1981. link

so what county with proper backing could make a breakthrough? surely westmeath are now more of a hurling county than football, they beat kilkenny in u21 and operate in the third tier compared to footballers in the fourth tier. Meath are doing huge work underage level and the co board is now well populated with hurling people, also and probarbly most important the hurling area has ahuge opulation compared to non hurling areas if given the right backing and money i think meath could do what dublin have done. The meath fans would also jump on the bandwagon if this happened dickie10 (UK) - Posts: 677 - 07/01/2017 20:46:45 1943853 Link 0 |
All hurling in Kildare is north of Newbridge. Its crazy really that a town like Athy with a population of about 12,000 cant get 15 lads together for a team but its all football in south Kildare. I would say the main hurling area is north west Kildare especiallly the likes of Prosperous and Coill Dubh where it would take precedent over the football. Hurling is also massive in Naas. If you drive through the town you'll see 90% of young lads carrying a hurl with them. Naas underage play in the Kilkenny leagues at some levels and are doing quite well as far as i can see. 11jm11 (Kildare) - Posts: 364 - 07/01/2017 21:26:30 1943863 Link 0 |
Roscommon has a pocket of hurling interest from Oran ( four miles or so ) North of Roscommon town and extends to East side of Ballinasloe with the Padraig Pearses club. Clubs include Uaran, Naomh Dominic ,Ath Liag, Tromaun, Na Piarsaigh ,Gaeil Ros Comain, Ceithre Boithre. Unfortunately no hurling clubs north of Oran and no hurling in Kiltoom , Monksland to the south where Gaelic Football is the mainstay. moros (Roscommon) - Posts: 1075 - 07/01/2017 21:47:51 1943873 Link 0 |

Here's a rough map I made... The darker the blue the more hurling is played in that area - might not be 100% accurate but I hope it helps :) JXV (Mayo) - Posts: 39 - 08/01/2017 00:32:49 1943886 Link 5 |
Ya must know your Hurling around the country. Good stuff. I'm thinking that there are 12 Westmeath clubs in that darker " Hurling area" on your map and 3 outside of it including Castletown Geoghegan traditionally one of the strongest Hurling clubs but surrounded by football.

7 or 8? Unfortunately I'd say there's 4 at most judging from what I've seen. The Mayo SHC consists of 4 teams, one of whom didn't even field this year. The county team is also made up entirely of those 4 clubs, plus 4 or 5 lads from other counties. I remember a few years ago seeing players from Ballina and Belmullet on Mayo teams, but sadly they seem to be gone.

Which club didn't field? Westport? Some of the Ballina players are playing with Castlebar now, I think. There were a couple of new underage clubs set up, I heard...?

thats a great map that area in meath and westmeath that is dark blue would definitly follow hurling more than football dickie10 (UK) - Posts: 677 - 08/01/2017 18:29:22 1944049 Link 0 |
Yeah Westport gave walkovers in all their games, and only had one member of the Mayo county panel. I've no idea about underage but it's not looking rosy at senior level with such low numbers.

Nice map. Being picky now, but you could move the dark blue west of ennis for about a 15 mile radius. Nothing but hurling there. ZUL10 (Clare) - Posts: 693 - 08/01/2017 20:36:23 1944103 Link 1 |
