Cork vs Waterford (Hurling)

Replying To Pope_has_spoken:  "Something special about Waterford-Cork games. Maybe it's pure nostalgia because of the games in the 00's, but always get excited about this fixture. Waterford have the better players overall but Waterford haven't had a competitive game since the collapse against Galway so I think Cork's run out against Tipp levels it up. Think Waterford's half back line/midfield will probably swing it their way but wouldn't shock me it Cork won it. Tipped Waterford to win it this year after the replay loss against Kilkenny so gotta stick with them. ~PHS"
Interesting that you call their loss against us a collapse. In interviews after the game McGrath was like the cat who got the cream. Played largely with a reserve side for most of the game and ironically the "collapse" happened when he took off the reserves and put on a few of the more established players. McGrath looked a very happy man after the game, like any manager would when he finds there's a depth of talent in the squad

Replying To Condorman:  "Waterford lost that replay to Kilkenny who were well beaten by Tipp in the final.Tipp were very lucky to beat Galway by 1 point in the semi , the same Tipp who wiped the floor with Waterford in the Munster final.
But you fancy Waterford?
Don't understand that thinking."
With all due respect; it seems you don't understand sport.

Just because A beats B; who beat C. Doesn't necessarily mean C will lose against A.

Listen. The last two year's AI semi-finals - 2015 & 2016 - have featured the same four teams, with the same fixtures: Kilkenny v Waterford and Tipperary v Galway, Both games over the two years have been classics; the hurling has been sublime. There was nothing between the teams, and on any given day any team could beat the other.

I expect Waterford to just shade this.

Replying To bricktop:  "Totally agree on Gleeson, has all the attributes of a top class hurler EXCEPT decision making. Makes too many wrong choices as yet (he's still young) to be a Shefflin like figure for Waterford.

Waterford will crowd out their halfback line and midfield to deny Lehane and Co space and seek to create space up the other end for their forwards, nothing unusual in that, but leaving the likes of Maurice on his own with no one within 30 yards of him is awful to watch. They'll pick off the long range points, but to win an AI you need a real goal threat and unless Maurice gets a bit of support they won't get them.

We'll find out if the Cork rising like mushrooms in the morning is for real or a one off this weekend."
I second that. His self indulgent play drives me nuts. I'd say half the Waterford forwards hate playing with him cos you are never getting a pass no matter how good the run you made was.

As a raw talent he is just phenomenal but he won't be judged as a great of the game if he doesn't mature as a player. I wouldn't mind but he has a brilliant role model in Brick and Moran too to a lesser extent.

Waterford's style of play won't lend itself to the type high-scoring shoot-out we saw in Cork v Tipp. I expect a lower scoring game (fewer goals too), Cork's forwards and midfield to get far less space than they got against Tipp, and Waterford to win by three. Something like 1-18 to 0-18. (Cue 3-27 to 2-28 turkey shoot.....)

A couple of outrageous scores so far. One from Gleeson and another from Lehane.

Game shaping up nicely. Waterford seem to be leaving a lot of space in their back line which is madness against this Cork forward line.

How are Cork not miles ahead? All these chances will cost them. Leinster hurling is better anyway :)

Waterford will be happy to be level at half-time. They need to sort out Austin Gleason's role for the second half. The first half was entertaining but not as intense as you might expect - I think it will really heat up in the second half.

Waterford have been hugely disappointing in the second half. They have gone backwards since last year.

Waterford were absolutely abject. They had no game plan other than long range shooting and Shanahan was starved of possession. The one ball he got he scored a goal.
They lacked any ability to find a team mate and they drove so many bad wides. Their first touch was brutal throughout.
Where was Gleeson playing? He was anonymous.
I hope it is a blip rather than a regression for this team. The qualifier draw might finish them for this year. Back to school or the drawing board for Derek.
But fair play to Cork, just like ourselves, what a difference a year makes!

Really poor from Waterford. Bad touch and really bad discipline. 15 or so wides I think.

Cork fully deserving of their win.

I wonder will the Sunday Game pundits highlight the off-the-ball incident missed by the ref (leading to punishment later by CCC)? Or will it be just brushed under the carpet?? No cynicisim in hurling...

Well done Cork but Waterford were terrible that's as bad as they have been for years. Cork were miles better and Waterford were blessed not to finish that game with 13 players. Can anyone tell me and I'm been honest, did anyone see Austin Glesson in the second half ? They need to get him back to 6 and leave him there.

Fair play to Cork they are back in the big time and must be contenders for all Ireland after two good performances against the Munster finalists of past two years.
They might have too much in their locker for Clare in the final should be a great game.
Waterford started where they left off in Salthill they didn't look at the races today but in the qualifiers one or two wins builds up that momentum again.
Who would have believed 3 of the 4 all Ireland semi finalists in the qualifiers!!

Gleason looked lost today. I was surprised that he was not moved to centre back for the second half. Waterford had no shape to them overall. I thought they would be serious all-Ireland contenders this year but that was a brutal performance.

Final in The Gaelic Grounds boys. If it was Waterford v Clare it woukd have been Thurles. Fairs fair Thurles has been used 3 times already this Munster championship season.
