Fingal County withdrawal from inter-county hurling

Why did Fingal County withdraw from inter-county hurling?

I thought it was supposed to be the start of a changed inter-county landscape with South Dublin, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and Dublin City to follow?

How many people would have supported them?

Is there a divisional hurling championship where Fingal, South Dublin, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and Dublin City take on each other?

Very few to be honest. There was no real connection between the team and the Fingal area, which in fairness is predominantly a football stronghold.

Not to my knowledge but I'm not well up on the hurling at that level, I could be corrected but I don't think so.

The Fingal team, was more to give guys a chance to hurl at a higher level and then hope it would have a knock on effect . these would be guys who would not get a chance otherwise because of their clubs status.
Not unlike the Kerry football championship with South Kerry etc.

No. To be honest Fingal is the only area that ever had a separate identity within the GAA in Dublin, (the rest are merely administrative/political areas), and the Fingal leagues were absorbed into the Dublin Co board leagues in 1995. Even at that there were 3 football leagues and no regular hurling league. A summer hurling league was tried for a couple of years but never really took hold.

Not to my knowledge but I'm not well up on the hurling scene.

no. fingal isn't a hurling area, and i cant think of any of the dublin hurlers from fingal. Most are southside or dublin city.

I thought with the population of Dublin it was going to lead to a split in to 4 teams so that more players will have the opportunity to play at inter-county level making the game stronger in each area.

I guess it was a similar idea to South Down or Non-Ards. Give lads from less traditional clubs a chance on the inter-county stage.

Not a chance wouldn't even get to a discussion table. At Intercounty level up to U16 all four codes currently are or will be broken out into regions. At some Go-games ages you get the leagues broken out into areas for convience. But in terms of leagues/championships we are one county! Plus teams from other counties compete in various competitons in some codes at Juvenile level in Dublin leagues, Kilcoole, Bray, Wicklow Town, Naas, Newbridge and Celbridge.

If Dublin's domination continues unabated and attendances continue to plummet bet your bottom dollar the GAA will do something

Sounds like the work of the 5th provincial council! ;-)

It was a pity to see our own hurlers drop to division 2A. Laois were due a win over us. It was hard fought. Having beaten them during the regular league phase and having finished above them in the table, it was bizarre to have to play them in this ridiculous relegation playoff. Added to that we also had to play them in their own backyard! Division 2A hasn't hindered Westmeath in recent Leinster qualifier round robins.

Cavan's return might inspire Fingal County and the 3 other regions..
