All Ireland under 21 hurling championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

big one for us tomorrow an experienced limerick side are 1/6 with bookies to win tomorrow, think the 1/6 odds are nonsense, i see galway posing a huge test tomorrow night they have gilligan grealish loftus concannon monaghan and coyle from their 2015 minor winning side as well as conor whelan , its a very experienced limerick side out with finn, hayes, ronan lynch cian lunch casey morrissey and barry nash having played senior this year and we have 3 big performances behind us

cant see anything other than a big kilkenny win in other semi but i hope derry fans and supporters along with kerry/meath enjoy the semple stadium experience its a brilliant venue, id expect a good limerick support, pity its clashing with camogie semi finals

i know 21s is about developing players but right now its about winning . best of luck tomorrows lads

I'll be there but I'm expecting a Limerick victory by about 7 points. The days of coming straight into an All Ireland semi final with hopes of winning it are long gone. I'd say even the Galway manager doesn't know what his best team is. The level of preparation by all teams these days means that you need to have played a number of competitive games to reach this stage of the championship to stand a chance of winning it.

Ah folks this is an embarrassment to hurling , Kilkenny running tru Derry for fun, this is going to be the cricket of all cricket scores. Can we not have united Ulster team or something cause this is ridiculous.

There will be reactions like yours for the next 24 hours. Then everyone will forget about it and the same farce will be repeated this time next year.

Very true. But I feel sorry for the Derry lads here.

Can't remember if I have even seen a county game with such a scoreline difference. Over 43 points up! That's just madness.

I feel sorry for them too. I don't think many Kilkenny fans will get any particular satisfaction from the scoreline.

It a complete farce. 52 point obliteration and not a thing will change in all likelihood.
Kilkenny young lad doing the usual afterwards saying Derry are a great team and will take a lot from this game. It starts at an early age nowadays.

The problem there is you are talking sense with the suggestion of an all Ulster team. I think Donal Og has being suggesting that idea for a while and it's falling on deaf ears at HQ. It would be a great way of promoting hurling in Ulster and allow top class players play at the highest level. Keep the Ulster championship but pick an Ulster all stars team for the semi final.

The great irony is the English put the county boundaries system on us in the first place and it's sacrosanct across the GAA at inter county level that all teams with the exception of the now defunct Fingal teams must link back to county boundaries. The Celtic challenge is a good idea because you break up the strong hurling counties into 2 or 3 teams.

I'd rather see 20 senior Gaelic football teams than 32. You look at counties like Longford with great spirit, organisation and ambition who will never be a force because of demographics. If you merged Longford with say Roscommon or Westmeath the new team would be much stronger. Longford continually produce good players like Bardens and the Quinns against the odds. If you put the 5 or 7 best Longford players into a team with Roscommon or Westmeath you'd have a serious team.

In fairness no matter what they say someone will criticise them. Only difference is you'll get a bit less criticism for saying "yerrah the scoreboard lied, they've a few good hurlers who would get into any team, we just had a good day, I'm sure they'll be back etc." than if you say "they're a limited team who put in a poor performance, in truth it was a total mismatch and we clearly showed we are a far better team than them" .

As for the Ulster team idea, how would they train? Good luck getting lads to travel 100k or more out to somewhere central like Omagh/Clones or something several nights a week on top of their current county training. You could probably train in Lurgan or Belfast since despite lads loving the idea of some all star diamond in the rough hiding in Donegal, truth be told an Ulster select team would be 50% Antrim 20% Down 20% Derry and the rest made up mostly of Armagh

And if you don't intend on them training too often what's the point? Any Liam MacCarthy county team who trains 5 nights a week since November will batter the sh*t into a slapped together Ulster team who've trained together half a dozen times.

Plus even if you worked it in senior, how would it work at U21 or minor? You think 17/18 year olds can regularly get across the province on a weeknight to train? Or 20 year olds down in college?

Shocking trio of wides from Casey after his 1-02. Galway are a good side and will gain confidence to longer it stays close on the scoreboard.

You must be joking? I for one couldn't ever accept theoretically breaking up my own county and dividing it with the neighbours and supporting them.

As for the English making the county system, they were also responsible for making the country united in the first place as before they came we were never a united country just 200-300 mini kingdoms built into larger kingdoms and always fighting with each other. So should we just ignore the fact that our soccer/rugby teams are founded thanks to the English too? We may as well split back into 300 mini kingdoms and call ourselves separate nations based on old river borders? Bring back the Deise and Scottis tribes and reinstate a high king outside of Navan.

If you want an example why it won't work look at the railway cup. No one cares about it. The history is too deep to be uniting counties. The way forward in both codes is through more funding into the poor counties and less into the strong counties. Similar to the drafting system in the US. Changing the football championship as well, into group knock out and a second lower tier championship for those counties knocked out from the first.

It's fine to get rid of the out of date provincial championship we can't touch the county system, it's the holy grail of the GAA. We may as well start paying the players big wages and open up the transfer market.

I think it was the Normans, not the English who created the county boundaries.

The county system sucks. Definitely merge counties for the hurling. Put Ulster as one team..the rest of Connacht minus Galway. They 'll still get thrashed though

Kerry beat Meath in the U21B competition today. I expect Kerry would beat Derry and most likely would not have conceded as much against KK today.

It's clear that there is no interest in hurling at county board level anywhere in Ulster. They should be made play in the B competition and no way should they have an automatic right to play in the " A" competition.

Derry and most Ulster counties are trying to improve hurling. At least they enter these national competitions. I am not sure, the same can be said of Kilkenny, in regards to football. Ulster is a football province, first and foremost, I know not everybody would agree, but I do think an Ulster structure that competes in the national league and Championship as one could increase the profile of hurling, and provide hurlers an opportunity to compete at a higher standard. Over 10 - 15 years with the right investment; this could improve hurling in Ulster.
