Westmeath V Dublin

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I know all Westmeath fans would love to see Westmeath go out and play positively on Sunday. Saying this, as we know, this would leave us vulnerable at the back and could leak goals with Dublin's Fire power! . With the space of Croke Park Paul Sharry, Ger Egan, John Heslin, Kieran Martin, Shane Dempsey, along with our half backs dolan and daly can play a good running attacking game and make a high scoring game of it.

Would like to see us take a diff approach than the last 2 years and show some progress!

I hope Westmeath go out on Sunday and have a right go at Dublin, but I expect with Cribben at the helm they will set up ultra defensive again. Westmeath have set up ultra defensive in the last two meetings with Dublin and not even gotten remotely close to justify playing that way again. We don't have the big, physical and fit defenders and forwards to make it work defensively, and we weren't well drilled in counter attacking when in possession in the last two meetings.

We have nothing to lose next Sunday so we may as well have a cut at them by playing to our strengths, which lies in the forward line. No point in setting up for damage limitation.

With the Leinster Junior Final between Louth and Meath on before this match I will have the privilege to stay on and watch this match. Hopefully Westmeath can put it up to the Dubs. That extra match against Offaly should do the Westmeath team the world of good.

If we don't play at least one sweeper and possibly two next Sunday, we will lose by 25 points. This would demoralise everybody and give us no chance in the qualifiers. So we have everything to lose by simply "going for it". The game plan has to be keep it tight for as long as possible, and if the game breaks in our favour, take any opportunities that are presented. There are some deluded Westmeath fans out there advocating all out attack. Do you remember what happened to us in 2009 or to Longford two years ago?

I think going at and attacking Dublin may be more rewarding than most people think.

I disagree completely. Westmeath lost to Dublin by 13 points in 2015 and 15 points in 2016 while playing an ultra defensive style that doesn't suit the players we have and is not coached and drilled into the team. Is a defeat by 13 points or 15 points not a hammering and is it not demoralising to the players? What are you basing a prediction of a 25 points defeat on?

Lets clear up one thing. Nobody expects Westmeath to win this game. We have tried the ultra defensive tactic against Dublin. It wasn't even close to working. It does not suit Westmeath and Dublin are a team that have bettered stronger teams than Westmeath, teams that are far better drilled at this way of playing. We tried the tactic against Offaly in the drawn game and really they should have beaten us.

Nobody is advocating all out attack or man to man. But I certainly would not like to see the all out defense we adopted against Dublin in the previous two meetings. 7 points scored in one game and 10 in the other. To me it shows Cribben has next to no faith in the players. They did the same against Mayo last year. Got spanked in the first half, decided to attack (not all out attack) Mayo in the second half and almost reeled them in.

You got a point. WM have a very good forward and a few other decent forwards. Heslin got no chance to test Dublin previously as he was isolated in a 'do it all by yourself' hope. Effectively sacrificing a player who can do offensive damage in favour of a damage limitation tactic that he had to sign up to. Dublin will likely win with whatever plan WM come out with. However why not let WM's best players do what they are really good at and test themselves against a top team. EG , if Heslin was to score a few points and grab a crackin' goal, he and the fans would remember that more than the defensive role he played in a mundane 10ish point defeat.

Just thought I'd bump this thread back onto page 1. Hopefully a good game and Westmeath play some attacking football like we've seen them play so far this year but Dublin to ease to victory by 10 points. Safe travels to all supporters.

Dublin to win by 6 to 8 points. Then there will be plenty of comment about Dublin on the decline or being there for the taking this year which will be proved wrong in time.

Westmeath are putting no pressure whatsoever on the dubs kickers.

And it's looking like it's gonna be a massacre now.

in fairness to wm they are trying but some of dublins off the ball movement and score taking has been immense. Never seen a team s dominant in a half in midfield. winning everything. our tactic of pushing up on the kickouts is destroying their keepers confidence. could be 20+ in the end

Game already over....so boring from a neutral point of view. Westmeath keeper is the definition of madness. They are however beat all over the field...a trading session for the dubs

Games like this are destroying Gaelic Games. From a Westmeath perspective it's quite pitiful to watch and you feel like just calling a halt to proceedings right now. The Association cannot go on in such a direction.

What a bore of a game, Westmeath might as well have given a walkover, did Cribbin learn nothing from playing the Dubs over last few years. Anyone paying into that should be given a refund. Thank god for the game of hurling as watching Gaelic football is akin to watching paint dry.

I put a coat of gloss on the skirting boards yesterday. I am away to watch it dry, it's far more preferable to this dross.

I know its an old topic around here, but why o why is it necessary to whistle and boo an opposition free taker when you are 17 points up and cruising ??
