Same old same old from Tyrone. Generally, good build-up play, lots of well-judged passes (foot and hand), lots of energy and running - and then making a total bags of it when they engineer the opening. Tyrone's inability to convert possession into scores was the big difference between the teams yesterday. Not good enough at this level. It's one thing to cite appalling wide stats when in fact most of the 'wides' were shots to nothing in the first place, but many of yesterday's wides were scorable. Mayo would have scored most of them. Before Mayo's last - excellent - winning point; Tyrone had had several chances and fluffed them all. The contrast with Mayo's last score was instructive - McLoughlin hit the ball with confidence and no messing about. I lost count after about 16 or 17 wides, including a fluffed goal chance, not to mention a handful of other shots dropped in the goalie's hands. Yesterday may have been particularly bad, but it's hardly anything new for this current Tyrone team. On other days, they don't even make the chances. If they had even two proper forwards, they'd be in with a shout of an AI. As it stands though, they're not even close. You go to the matches as that's what you do, but more in hope than any real expectation in 2017, that's for sure. essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 1141 - 27/03/2017 10:42:42 1971671 Link 0 |
Said this ages ago and was shot down. waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 27/03/2017 11:49:08 1971715 Link 0 |
They are short of forwards who can score, forwards with guts who can win their own ball, no proper target man and no freetaker. I'm utterly flabbergasted that this is the best that Tyrone can produce - they won't win Ulster as I see them 3rd best team behind Donegal and Monaghan. I've been a big fan of Mickey Harte in past but think his tactics are horrendous now and he's yesterday's man when it comes to team selection and strategy. I also question his backroom team - don't recall the guys name (I'm sure the Tyrone fans will know who he is) but there was a older guy who seemed to be Mickey's right hand man and was close to players - since he has been gone there has been something missing.

Tyrone won the AI in 2008 without a star forward, well at least one that was fit enough to make an impact. Collectively they had enough quality to chip in with scores which was enough to beat a top Kerry side but they did it without a go to forward that year and they were written off as contenders after losing to Down in Ulster. So I wouldnt write them off just yet. It is March after all and they lost by a point to a very good side. Not that winning by a point to the same side would mean much anyway at this time of the year. I can see why you were shot down if you said they had absolutely no chance. Its not Antrim we're talking about. They do have a chance.

I actually hope we don't beat Kerry this weekend! Wally (Tyrone) - Posts: 912 - 27/03/2017 12:44:52 1971751 Link 0 |
They don't !! If you don't have scoring forwards it doesn't matter if you are Tyrone or Antrim, you wont win the main prize. waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 27/03/2017 12:49:55 1971756 Link 0 |

I think its a mental problem in Tyrone. When the game is in the melting pot, Tyrone have nobody that can stand up and win the match. Mayo gave Tyrone so many chances in the last 10 minutes but nobody had the nerve to confidently kick the ball over the bar. TakeyourPoint. (Tyrone) - Posts: 133 - 27/03/2017 14:23:00 1971820 Link 0 |
You can add Kerry into this boat - stop Geaney and we have nobody else to trouble the opposition as yesterday's game in Cavan proved. We were very lucky to get away with a draw KYTotalFootball (Kerry) - Posts: 280 - 27/03/2017 15:16:06 1971854 Link 1 |
how many scoring forwards did they have in 08?

I think everybody is overreacting to a couple of bad results in the league in March. Tyrone are still a very good side and have one of the best defences around. Like the other Ulster teams they do struggle to get enough scores in Croke Park against the likes of Dublin, Kerry and Mayo but they still have a great chance of winning Ulster and who knows after that. precisely, at least have the balls to have shot or is it a case of in back of head thinking if I miss this I mightn't get another shot or mickey might drop me. How are we going to know if players on the bench a good enough if they cant' get game time once the league begins and the names start filtering back. Ballybofey should have been a wake up call and try a couple of other forwards to see if they could have rescued something from a lost cause, at least they could have done no worse.

Geaney at 14 and a fit JOD at 15 is miles better than anything Tyrone can offer so pull the other one. That game yesterday was just like the quarter final last year. Tyrone did take some shots from difficult angles but you'd expect them to have scored a fee more than they did and the wides total doesn't take into account some of the appalling attempts that dropped short. I certainly think Bradley is an upgrade on McCurry who is far too wasteful. Given what we've seen from this years league I just can't see Tyrone going any further than last year. Was that the reason Dublin only scraped a draw against Mayo last year? Their forwards only scored 6 points and Rock got 4 of them. Awwwwnow (Cavan) - Posts: 1050 - 27/03/2017 16:04:22 1971882 Link 0 |
Personally, I think Donegal are quite capable of beating Dublin. They have merged in young players alongside Murphy and McBrearty. Defense is tight. The McHughs are starring. Dubs may become overconfident during the year, and Donegal are the team to ambush them. Rockies (Cork) - Posts: 947 - 27/03/2017 16:47:28 1971910 Link 0 |
Pretty much. The forwards (including subs) got 1-15 in the replay and that's why they won. Kurt_Angle (Dublin) - Posts: 567 - 27/03/2017 16:59:13 1971918 Link 1 |
Tony Donnelly used to be his right hand man. I think Gavin Devlin ( Could be wrong ) is the main guy with Mickey harte now. Am I right in saying that Tyrone only have one selector (Devlin)..

You are indeed right Tony Donnelly was the man alright - to Tyrone fans is he as big a miss tactically as some suggest in your county?
