Anyone see Brendan Flynn''s comments about Aidan O'Shea? Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 18/05/2017 17:03:50 1988031 Link 0 |
That's a bit OTT from Flynn Another example of all facets of a gaelic players life being micro analyzed. Not being involved in a huddle after a challenge game in May.......god help us!! keithlemon (Australia) - Posts: 920 - 18/05/2017 17:11:14 1988037 Link 2 |

Perhaps but 11 of that team named have been on the road since 2011. Come the business end of summer I'd say only Harrison, Durcan & D O'Connor will make the starting 15 who weren't around in 2011. Mayo have found very few players in the last 6 years to match the quality of the lads already there, this will eventually catch up with Mayo. I reckon there's 5 or 6 of Mayo's best 20 players who'd have retired if they had an All Ireland in their back pocket. TheWestIsAwake (UK) - Posts: 529 - 18/05/2017 19:23:50 1988077 Link 0 |

Yeah, I thought it was a very strange remark by Flynn. There really isn't any love lost between Meath and Mayo. Flynn seems to come out with lots of off the wall comments like this, probably why he is not involved with the TV side of RTE anymore. Pericles for making the reference, and you for getting it are now my new favorite posters. A Troid Too Far indeed. Here's hoping Salthill is Mayo's Nijmegen: as far as they get. Sorry Pericles, nothing personal.

I think a lot will depend on our youngest line, our half forward line. Diarmuid had a disappointing year last year. Possibly spending too much time trying to bulk up rather than concentrating on his running game. I've never had much faith in conor o'shea but he has been putting in better performances as he continues. Boland showed some great sparks early in the league and then seemed to lose form. If these players stepped up then we could have a chance. nextyear (Mayo) - Posts: 60 - 19/05/2017 10:45:44 1988262 Link 0 |
I think we'll still be ok for this year nextyear, with the likes of Caff and Chris Barrett fit again. One of them is likely to be squeezed out when Harrison is ready, and Donie Newcombe has made the cut, so is going to be developed by being in the panel this year. A couple of years down the road we could have the potential for bigger changes, with Higgins, Caff, Barrett and Boyler all hitting the ditch around the same time. But other transitions have been made steadily, so new defenders will be a feature over the next couple of years.

Username I agree with most of your point however the line about it been year 1 under Roachford I disagree with. Mayo have a great team, stars all over the pitch, you would expect them to get to finals etc. The all Ireland is what Mayo are aiming for, anything else would be deemed a failure. When Harte came to Tyrone he bought a team that was beat by Sligo the previous year to the all Ireland the next year. Jim McGuiness again bought a failing team with massive discipline problems to Ulster titles and all Irelands. Yes positives to take but this team is on the clock and an all Ireland is needed soon or Roachford is gone. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2088 - 19/05/2017 12:50:59 1988319 Link 0 |
Two I would drop for sure would be Boyle and Moran. When I was at the u21 semi-final 2016 between Mayo and Dublin, I thought the no7 akram was very impressive. Akram in for Boyle is obvious to me. I don't think Moran is mobile enough. Better suited for coming on later in games at this stage. Enda Varley was flying any time I saw him playing for Vincents. Why is he not on the Mayo team? Good solid player who can get scores. Varley in for Moran. gormdubhgorm (Dublin) - Posts: 990 - 19/05/2017 17:22:19 1988403 Link 0 |
Because Varley spent years on the Mayo panel without ever breaking into the side on a regular basis. At the end of the day, club championship level in Dublin is still a fair bit below top inter-county standard. We do have a habit of nursing great white hopes in Mayo. Drop Boyle, ond of our best players, and replace him with a man who hasn't played senior inter-county ?

Mayo are in the same boat as last year. I'd expect either a Dublin/Kerry final a Dublin Mayo final or a Mayo Kerry final. With the off possibility of one of three Ulster teams causing an upset to those line ups and I'd day monaghan might be best for that job. Every year Mayo are apparently in decline but yet keep getting so close. I think fans/pundits/media have to put Mayo down because you can't hype a horse that keeps falling at the final hurdle year after year it gets boring so it's best to say they will do nothing until they do something. Opinions don't really count in this game. Going on evidence of the last number of years there's nothing to suggest they won't be up there. No new forwards but same story as usual. They work around that and almost bet Dublin with no new forwards. Cliche crap. We shall see. Interesting times. The old Mayo/Galway rivalry has a return this year. Ulster as competitive as ever. Monaghan looking very well placed. Kerry back to the old days. Tipp still on the rise. Dublin still favourites but no longer the unbeatables. Clarke is in his mid 30's and Cafferkey has had a very serious injury and getting on whilst SOS is approaching 30 and is commuting from Dublin by all accounts. If these lads had an All Ireland in their back pocket I suspect not all of them would have carried on. Players are retiring younger given the commitment level required. Look at this Mayo team since 2011. I think it was only in 2011 they weren't still playing come September given they've made 3 finals and played in 2 semi final replays. Its not just about age its the miles on the clock and the mental scars they've suffered. TheWestIsAwake (UK) - Posts: 529 - 20/05/2017 12:28:37 1988516 Link 0 |
Yeah Boyle is over-rated in my opinion. He works hard but makes errors. Varley should be brought back into the Mayo fold for sure. Those are just my opinions from the outside looking in. gormdubhgorm (Dublin) - Posts: 990 - 20/05/2017 18:10:43 1988596 Link 0 |
And Dublin club football is a high standard so varley will have not much trouble getting back into the swing of things.

Semi final at best.they wont win an all ireland this year.always the bridesmaid never the bride. GGdub (Dublin) - Posts: 260 - 20/05/2017 19:16:50 1988615 Link 0 |
So is Mayo club football, it's still club football. Varley's had plenty of chances to show he's up to intercounty standard. I don't know what's happened Akram, may be focussing on his studies? Even as a minor he looked a good prospect. Hopefully he'll get a chance in the future if he wants it. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7337 - 20/05/2017 19:32:44 1988617 Link 0 |
