What a brilliant player. Easily forget all he came through to come back and star again for Donegal in recent years. Always felt he was underrated but definitely not outside of Donegal. Hard one to take especially the timing of it but no doubt Christy would still have plenty to offer though not for a full 70 mins. A real classy footballer on his day. First time I noticed him was in a qualifier in Croker against Meath one time, maybe 2002 or so? Scored a lovely goal if memory serves. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13692 - 11/01/2017 09:36:02 1944767 Link 0 |
Yeah he buried a goal into the roof of the net against Meath that day. He was a quality finisher when he got in on goal. He was some man to move with the ball too. One of those players that seemed quicker with ball in hand than without. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9073 - 11/01/2017 11:26:53 1944792 Link 0 |
a fantastic player big Christy was. There seems to be quite a few Donegal lads calling it quits at the same time, is this just pure coincidence or is there more to it? SaffronDon (Antrim) - Posts: 2385 - 11/01/2017 11:31:35 1944795 Link 1 |

I think its just coincidence the 3 lads yesterday are all 35. McNiallis has personal reason and thats his right. McLoone knows he somehow doesnt fit into Rorys plans. He has his medals and prefered to opt out. This could be put down to Rory and while Leo is a player I like I probably wouldnt have started him last year either. Thompson - Now that is a strange one. He played well last year and as far as I know he is back living in Donegal so I dont undertsand this one myself. Listen everyone in Donegal knew that these players needed to be replaced anyway. Fair enough we would have hoped that they would be experienced subs to bring on but with the way training has gone I imagine its too much dstuction (Donegal) - Posts: 1209 - 11/01/2017 11:59:57 1944804 Link 0 |
yea McNiallis was the one that stuck out for me. I think he's a top player, probably in the prime of his career as well, so it seemed strange that he would opt out, but then I dont know the fella. Ideally as you say you'd want to be introducing new faces this year but have some of the old guard still there as impact subs at the very least. I'm wondering is it too much too soon for some of the younger players to uphold the high standards that Donegal have set over the last number of years.

Big loss I think he still has loads to offer as an impact player. We'll miss you Christy, what a man! JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1432 - 11/01/2017 12:45:23 1944817 Link 0 |
Why wouldnt you have started Leo last year? He was one of our 5 best players Christy was a brilliant servant, I think he is retiring at the right time. The training and the effort has to take its toll and he can enjoy his achievement. He had his best spell with donegal over the past 4 years. Amazingly consistent player and probably one of the best passers of the ball too. Well done and best wishes Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3830 - 11/01/2017 12:50:33 1944821 Link 1 |
It looks like a rebuilding job for Donegal this year although it wouldn't be the greatest shock if they won Ulster and made an All Ireland Semi final but just don't see them going any further. TheWestIsAwake (UK) - Posts: 529 - 11/01/2017 12:56:33 1944827 Link 0 |
Quality footballer, probably a bit underrated in my opinion. Saw him in the Sigerson many moons ago for Sligo IT and he stood out a mile. Pace to burn and fantastic movement. He put in some stint in the Donegal jersey, thats a man thats earned his retirement! WestsideWarrior (Galway) - Posts: 24 - 11/01/2017 16:31:02 1944910 Link 2 |
Love Toyes lazy style - makes it look easy - but classy player.

Excellent player but I always thought that it was his finishing that let him down??

Of all the players who have called it quits this year Christy is the one I will miss the most. MuckrossHead (Donegal) - Posts: 5028 - 11/01/2017 19:31:25 1944951 Link 5 |
Not at all, he was a great guy to score vital points as soon as he put his foot on the pitch or set one up, or better still, get a goal as soon as he arrived on the pitch. The last couple of seasons he was one of our best playmakers.

Maybe his shot selection for points let him down at times. But in one on one situations when through on goal Christy was your man every time.

what a loss Christy is (with all respect to the other two boys, Rory got his day, Walsh was always a solid man to have on your team and stood into the fold without any fuss, done his job well and there was no more word about it) theweanling (Cavan) - Posts: 414 - 12/01/2017 09:44:56 1945072 Link 3 |
Definitely was going for his point that day against kildare.

One of my favourite players ever to pull on the Donegal jersey. InishowenMan (Donegal) - Posts: 216 - 12/01/2017 14:20:36 1945175 Link 0 |
