Bitter rivalries

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

never mind the inter county game, there must surely be some outrageous club rivalries.
in wexford we had a few over the years, there was a trinity of rivals in oulart, buffers alley and rathnure but only one of them is any good now.but there was often filthy games between the 2 in the 80's-90's,buffers alley had a centre back who would kill a man to win a ball!

As for Tyrone, been successful in the recent decades they would class perhaps Armagh or donegal as their RIVALS. Monaghan have had a bit of a purple patch. Monaghan, like other weak counties such as westmeath, are disliked by their neighbours but can hardly claim to be anyone's historic rivals."
Yeah I think you're pretty accurate there. I don't think Tyrone would look at Monaghan as rivals. Monaghan have 2 recent Ulster titles but lost to Tyrone in Croker when it mattered.
On the flip side, those losses probably do leave a sour taste in Monaghan minds and while they feel they can compete with Tyrone they'll call it a rivalry. Expect that to end when McManus' legs start to go tho.

For me being from North Kildare the rivalry with Meath is intense. Their rivalry with Dublin for the last 10 years or so has been irrelevant as has our.

I think it varies in different parts of the county though. I hear down South and to the West the rivalry with Offaly Laois is big.

Meath and Cork had a very bitter rivalry in the late 80s and early 90s. They met in 4 All Ireland finals which included a replay.

Anyone that says a rivalry is one-sided and their county is not bothered is absolutely twisted with bitterness.

How do you figure that?

I'm sure there are Meath fans for example who see Dublin as their big rivals, but I'm certain there are some, particularly younger, Dublin fans who don't see Meath as a rival due to how far they've fallen behind.

Lived and worked in Cork during 80s, the bitterness between the two went very deep. Hated the sight of one another.

The worse has to be Cork and Kerry, there was a prank call on a radio station few years ago around the All Ireland Final between Kerry and Cork where I think a Kerry man wanted a Cork delivery business to bring a delivery from Dublin to Kerry, the item would be picked up at 5pm on Sunday, it was the Sam Maguire cup, the Cork man lost the head, it was somebody pretending to be a Kerry man but it showed how sore some people get around football matches especially when you are playing bitter rivals

Exactly but if your not from down here people just wouldn't get it, hence some of the comments in reaction to me saying its the fiercest in the inter-county scene.

But it is, they have been going at each other for 127 years. They've contested 90% of Munster finals between them and 2 All-Irelands already since the back door came in. When the ball is thrown in at a Cork/Kerry Munster final everything is on the line...

But no its Offaly Kildare dubs and Westmeath for me in that order."
Royal dunne I would like to tie you to a chair and force you to watch westmeaths come back against Meath in 2015 a hundred times. Lol

First one I have to say is tipp and Kilkenny . Gf is from carrick and I've witnessed many fights on nights out after all Ireland's and semis just over the small ball . It's a rare town that is technically in both Kilkenny and tipp with Waterford 50metres across the bridge .Not many towns have three all Ireland constesting counties in the one little area . ..possibly Waterford /tipp a little too

Monaghan and Tyrone . Been to enough of these over the years and it gets heated enough . Armagh have fizzled away so this rivalry has strengthened a little bit the last few years .

And lastly a mention for two counties that don't border but seem to be meeting a lot at the latter stages . Mayo and Dublin . The rivalry seems to be growing every year ,with the replay they are even more familiar with each other .Even the players are developing rivalries keegan /Connolly Etc Mayo can only seem to pip Dublin before the final and it's been a while so this year will be an interesting game as ever if they meet .

Other honarble mentions some of which are not bordering :

Donegal /Tyrone (no comment necessary )

Galway /Kilkenny ( Galway usually so close but so far )

Kerry/Dublin ( not quite what is used to be as Kerry have failed to upset the Dubs for a while or come even close )

Mayo/Galway ( great games of the 90s and early 00s between these too . Died off for a while but I'd presume this years clash will be interesting after last years upset )

Sure it's not like the Galway support would ever celebrate a win over Mayo... Oh wait.

Meath V Dublin is a rivalry. As is Kildare v Dublin.

It's just not a meaningful rivalry any more though.

How are Donegal and Tyrone not bordering?! That's news to me.

There's a border from south of Derry city all the way to Lough Derg roughly! Definitely a serious rivalry and definitely a long border between the the two counties.

It is for fans. When Dublin couldn't beat Meath between 96-01 it was still a rivalry. Kerry often give Cork a hammering.Still a huge rivalry.

To be fair to Monaghan, they won the National League once I think. I've seen the pictures in all the pubs.
