26 months for smuggling heroin into the States. His friends at FIFA must have owed him a few favours

Interesting character. But as you say 26 months for smuggling 6Kg of heroin?

Refereeing career
During the 2002 FIFA World Cup Moreno refereed the round of 16 match between Italy and co-hosts South Korea on 18 June; following Italy's elimination from the tournament after a 2-1 extra-time loss, Moreno's performance was criticised for several decisions: he awarded South Korea a controversial penalty in the first half (which was saved by Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, however), and later disallowed what would have been a golden goal by Damiano Tommasi for offside, as well as showing a second yellow card to Francesco Totti for a dive in South Korea's penalty area in extra-time while he was 40 yards away from the play.

In September 2002, while a candidate in October elections for places on the Quito city council, Moreno was suspended for twenty matches and investigated by Ecuadorian football authorities. This came after he made timekeeping errors in a match he officiated between Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito and Barcelona Sporting Club. FIFA also investigated him due to controversies "...in Japan, Italy and South America over the past few months".

In May 2003, in his third game back from his suspension, Moreno was again suspended, for one match, after he sent off three players from visiting Deportivo Quito in a 1-1 draw at Deportivo Cuenca. He retired the following month, blaming low performance marks for his retirement.

Arrest
Moreno was arrested on 21 September 2010 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, while trying to smuggle in six kilograms (over thirteen pounds) of heroin, which was hidden in his underwear. In January 2011, he pleaded guilty to the charges in a New York courthouse, facing a possible ten years in prison. On 23 September 2011, Moreno was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on the heroin smuggling charges. He was released from prison 26 months later and returned to Ecuador.

Love the Football's Greatest Teams shows on YouTube. I watched the one about Red Star Belgrade last night. What a team they had! It would have been very interesting to see just how good Red Star, and indeed Yugoslavia would have become if the awful Balkan war hadn't broken out. They had a rule in Yugoslavia at the time that players were not permitted to go abroad until they were 28.

So you would have had players like Mihajlovic, Jugovic, Savicevic, Prosinecki, Pancev etc all developing together and reaching their prime. Not to mention the other Croatian stars like Suker, Boban and Boskic. That was an unreal generation of talent and pretty much all of them went on to enjoy stellar careers in Italy and Spain.

Great team indeed. My favourite team were Milan from the 90's, Gazetta Football Italia on Saturday morning, live game Sunday on Channel 4 and the Monday night highlights show on RTE2. Baresi, Cosatcurta, Maldini, Tasotti, Donadoni, Rijkaard, Gullit, Ancelotti, Van Basten. But the never seemed to have a decent keeper, guess with the defence they had they didn't need one.

Another good watch on youtube was a documentary on Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, two completely different individuals who brought the NBA back from the dead and had a huge rivalry.

There were a lot of dodgy refereeing performances in that World Cup, seem to remember that there were a few fairly scandalous disallowed goals in Spain's game against the South Koreans also.

Yeah that was a superb Milan team. They added the likes of Savicevic, Boban and Desailly as well. Phenomenal.
One of, perhaps the best ever Champions League final displays was their 4-0 destruction of Cruyff's Barcelona 'Dream Team in 94. Savicevic was outstanding. My abiding memory of that match was Barca keeper Zubizaretta going absolutely ballistic at his defence after Savicevic had lobbed him beautifully!

It was a toxic tournament from the Korean side of things anyway. It was the same when they hosted the Olympics in 88. Roy Jones, one of the greatest boxers of all time was screwed over in the most ridiculous decision in the history of the sport and unfortunately it was just the tip of the iceberg at those games regarding 'home decisions'. They really should have been banned from hosting major sporting events after that and I'm sure Italy, Spain and Portugal would agree after that world cup. But obviously money talks loudest. It didn't surprise me at all that they were still trying to find a way to run the Olympics this summer in the midst of a global pandemic. With each 4 years that pass I find myself less interested in the Olympics. It's a corrupt money driven disaster.

good point,i play a bit of it too though which helps.
the key is to record golf and start from 1 hr late, fast on the add breaks, etc.
i have also heard good reports of nfl red zone,i must try it out because nfl is so stop-start too,but if there was a condensed version of rugby,i would probably watch more!

What would you condense/change about rugby to make it better.
I really dont see problem with a sport that has stop start elements and rugby dorsnt have too many though some occaasional games with TMOs can be slightly frustrating I wouldnt call for major changes to occur because some peoples attention spans cant keep with the game.

When is a sport not a sport?

What exactly makes something a sport? Does it require physical exertion, a governing body, a high level of skill and technical ability? How does an activity go from being seen as a game or a pastime to being officially classified as a sport?

The Council of Europe charter on sport uses the following definition: "Sport means all forms of physical activity, which through casual or organised participation, aim at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships or obtaining results in competition at all levels".

Perhaps there is a distinction to be made between what is a sport and what is a game? In my book golf is definitely a sport because it involves sustained physical activity, but the other ones you mention I would categorise as games."]Sustained physical activity? Walking you mean.

I believe Snooker players walk also.

Both are sport.

I got into endurance running after my footballing days were over. It was never something I was into, certainly not watching it. At the Olympics I was only ever interested in the 100m, 400m .

But it is weirdly addictive. Great for the body and mind. Although distance running is restricted at present I would advise anyone to give it a go. Start at 5k and build the miles in the legs. The ultimate aim is I suppose a marathon. I completed my first one in 2017. The sense of satisfaction and achievement is up there with anything I did in football.
