The Sunday Game - Awful Coverage

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Connacht Championship 2019:
Games played = 4
SG Highlights < 10 mins
SG Actual Analysis of games = 0

Pathetic again tonight like Joe Brolly last Sunday, Sean Cavanagh couldn't be a*rsed analyzing the game. Instead started mumbling about how tough they have it in Ulster compared to Connacht.

Second week in a row no talk about the Connacht game instead the use the Connacht slot to push a tier structure in football. Why not do this during the munster or leinster slots aswel? Connacht had 3 of its teams play in division one this year and is possibly the most difficult to predict a winner in

TSG in turning in to a propaganda machine rather than a GAA highlights show. Ridiculous stuff from Sean Cavanagh after the Galway V Sligo game, hardly a mention of the match.

And was that all about from Kevin McStay re Monaghan and Cavan kickouts? He went on and on about best options short and long yet when he showed us the final stats, both teams won 11 kickouts a piece!! that is the second time he has driven up a cul de sac - pathetic. Des Cahill looked as bewildered as folk watching.

Cavanagh like Brolly is dreadful. Tyrone will be in the Ulster semi after playing 2 division 4 sides and then they will face a Div 2 side.

Yes I did wonder about that statement. Reality is that there are 6-7 top tier teams and 2, possibly 3 at a stretch are in Ulster. It's not the firepit that it once was. Still the most competitive province followed closely by Connaught though.

I was warming to Sean Cavanagh at the end of last year but he was dreadful last night.

Ciaran Whelan is the best analyst they have imo. Sky coverage is so far ahead of them it's not even funny.

Some drivel out of Cummins last night, telling us that Tipp's strikers are so 'sweet' that they can 'hit' the full forward line accurately from the half-back line. I am sure any intercounty hurler, and a good few juniors hurlers can hit the ball 90+ yards.

Sky pundits far better, apart from Clerkin, he is clueless.

Yes I agree. Think Whelan is very good , can throw a blanket over the rest.
Enjoy Cavanagh on Sky as well. Can't think of anyone else.

The Sunday game at this stage is just getting so predictable. One or two of them talk a bit of sense from time to time and provide actual proper analysis of games and the rest are there to pedal whatever agendas they have or show off their latest blazer. The reason ex-players are on the panel is because they are supposed to provide some sort of perspective and knowledge that those of us watching at home perhaps might miss. I find it so frustrating to hear generic comments week on week without any in depth analysis and critique. Sure anyone sitting in their arm chair at home could regurgitate the stuff they come out with on a weekly basis.

Sky have definitely got the march on RTE as their pundits really break things down into the perfect level of detail. Canavan and Jamsie O'Connor being my two favourites. Whelan is probably the best of them on RTE but it's really the best of a bad bunch.

Séan Cavanagh is my favourite player, played football like a superhero. I know he's an accountant but is he really as boring as he seems on The Sunday Game? Not even a bit of craic out of him, seems more relaxed in radio interviews.

was the 11 not the amount of kick outs taken in the first half by each keeper?
regardless that actual stat board was hard to follow and i don't blame Mc Stay for that!!!!
however i thought he was really good last night, i thought that particular part regarding kick outs was interesting as to how both teams changed their strategy to suit their own gameplan as the game went on

Cavanagh seems to have another agenda. Why didnt he just spit out what he was really trying to say.
'Ulster football is great and the rest is sh!t'.
Desperate stuff from him

It has gone particularly bad the past two years imo. It's crazy that the producers and head of sport or whoever calls the shots are allowing it.

It is not just the Sunday game that has this nonsense. Aidan O Rourke's "analysis" on the RTE website on why Monaghan got beat by Cavan was enough to turn your stomach.
He couldnt find words big enough to describe what happened in Breffni Park last week, all when trying to describe something that is happening every night of the week in all sports-- the underdog showed more fight than the favourites and won the match.
There was no need for the showing off in prose to the extent that he did. Awful stuff on his behalf.

Some of the big names former players don't write the articles themselves. They are written by staff journalists.

yeah lot of articles are ghost written. former player speaks on phone to journalist for hour or two on what theyd like article to be about for the week. Writer then writes up something and shows it to player who agrees/requests changes and then it goes in paper/online.

RTE as a broadcaster in general is average.
The money the so called big names are able to demand is crazy. Semi state organizations are all crack pot set ups and are totally out of control.

The Sunday Game really is painful to watch these days. at least the football part. They have managed to ruin the coverage of the Mayo v Roscommon game. Brolly needs to go . basically Mayo are not Dublin so he berates them for not being the dubs. Himself and Whelan with their stupid analysis of how Mayo were so bad. I mean they lost the game by a point and were inches away from drawing it so how on earth were they so much poorer than Roscommon. Also the edited hghlights spoil the game, there is no continuity and you dont get a feel for the game at all. I dread to think how they will butcher the other games and I feel i will throw the tv out the window when brolly starts slating fermanagh and antrim and all the teams that are not Dublin
