Inner City Cork Club Fighting To Stay Alive

(Oldest Posts First)

The doors were set to shut on 126 years of history for one of Cork's great clubs this weekend. Originally a Mayo man I now live in Cork. However it was in my youth when I spent summers in Cork City with my Grandparents on Evergreen Road that I was first welcomed in to the Redmonds family, togging out for them each summer holiday. It took a while for the language barried between my Mayo brog and the inner city Cork accent to come down but it did and I spend some of my happiest days with the Sporting Reds. The evn made a passable hurler out of me. It saddens me greatly think hear of my old clubs demise.

However it seems there may be a small chink of light. A social media campaign sprung up over the weekend and is spreading like wild fire calling on all GAA people in the City and beyond to call to Redmonds club house on Tower Street this Wednesday at 8:30 to try and revive the club.

It would be a shame to see this great club house and the most central GAA hall in the city bulldozed for more
apartments. It would be a grand place to start kids with the basics of hurling and football.

Moderators - I realise this should probably go on the Cork forum but as the last post was over 6 months ago and the are just days to try save the club I posted it here. I hope that is ok.

Hopefully the meeting will be supported and the club saved

The gaa would own the property if the club folds

2 years ago a junior football club in Westmeath almost folded when unable to field a team twice in championship.

They put out an appeal at the time for players who might have finished up playing for other clubs and for people to get involved. They actually won a game or two this year.

Cork GAA just spent €70,000,000+ on PUC while it's clubs are going under?

This is extremely sad to hear, hopefully something can be done to save it.

I'm sure you are engaging with the County Board and hopefully they are supporting your club's efforts to remain open. Even if you can field one underage team just to keep the Club alive while you try to rebuild. Another option might be to see if you can amalgamate at youth levels with a neighbouring club for a few years. If you have the support of the county Board you should be able to find a way to keep the club officially open even if not fielding an adult team. Registering members on the servasport system even if they are playing in an amalgamated team should keep you ticking over.

Then start the rebuild. You have a club house, does it include a hall? do you run events, a youth club, anything that would bring people into the Club? There must be a reason for the Club's demise, you need to take an honest look at why things have got to this point and start addressing the issues.

Good luck.
