RTÉ anything but GAA sports Awards!

Hard to credit RTÉ gave not one award to any GAA team , player or manager ?
TG4 , local Radio stations , provincial papers are the GAAs friends not RTÉ . Maybe all counties should adopt Tyrones stand .
People moan about RTÉ losing matchs but do they really deserve them , Ryle Nugent and his team have more interest in the Irish Ludo team than GAA .

Well it's voted by the people...

Who obviously love show jumping

That wide spread and common "sport"

It's " an award " .
Like the Queen of the jungle award. Meaningless .

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Those awards have no credibility any more. Conor McGregor won the award last year ahead of Carl Frampton amongst others. Enough said.

Agreed. I'm old enough to remember when the GAA had almost no games on the TV and when Gaelic games generally were sneered at by cultural-cringe city dwellers. The opinions of those meringues didn't matter to me then and they don't matter to me now. Your club co final trophy and Sam and Liam are the only awards that matter to me.

Agree with you-awards given by RTE mean little and we pay for the pleasure of not watching most of the produce.

A media organisation isnt meant to be a sporting organisations friend. Its a colleague that get mutual benefits out of the partnership.
GAA loses out considerably if all counties adapted Tyrone's stand.
Which award was undeserving? Only award i had any real complaint with was James McClean but that was by public vote so you cant complain about that.

Hands up from those that posted already who doesn't like any sports other than GAA sports.

Who from the GAA deserved an award in 2017?

As for showjumping it was obviously under the 'riding' category which is usually popular.

As for James McClean winning. Congratulations to him and not just for the football.

The awards are mainly voted for by people who watch RTE a lot and probably don't participate or attend games of any sport. Their GAA coverage is too focussed on the top counties. They need to remember that they broadcast to 32 counties not 8.

Happy Christmas one and all.

Players from large field sport team sports rarely win individual sports awards - same as BBC sports award rarely won by footballers or rugby players. Usually athletes, tennis players..etc . Nothing to do with RTE disliking GAA . Silly idea considering how much coverage they give GAA

I wasn't aware that an Irish jumping team had won a European award but obviously a lot of voters were. I must be watching the wrong sports channels. Maybe some voters were just having a bit of fun.
I doubt if GAA teams will be too worried and I can't see Jim Gavin writing a letter of complaint to RTE about the 'awards'. I'm glad to see McClean getting an award if only because of his determination to stand by his principles despite the huge pressure on him by the English media and the abuse he had to take on social media and on the pitch. He was also one of the few Ireland players to show a bit of fire and determination as they slumped out of the World Cup.
Roll on the GAA season.

It was voted on by the public.
Some people are only happy to criticise.
There would be plenty complaining if Canning or Moran got the award, there were plenty who felt they didn't deserve hurler or footballer of the year, now its RTÉ bias against GAA if the public don't recognise them as sport star of the year

Anyway, don't worry too much because Declan Hannon, Limerick senior Hurling captain, will get sport star of the year next year

To be fair, Dublin football team deserve something. 3 in a row, first since Kerry 84-86. But I reckon they getting punished by RTE cos Jim Gavin chose to defend his player one day in the summer.

I would suggest if the Irish show jumping team won a popular vote - it must reflect on how few voted in the first place. I'd say most GAA people were out enjoying the weekend or more likely cannot bear to watch our National broadcaster.

The GAA should move to Sky Sports full time, they brought more viewers and revenue to RTE last year that all other sports put together . Let them show swimmers and show jumpers and see how they get on. Not a Dub supporter but they deserved Team of Year and surely Jim Gavin is Manager of Year

Ah no in fairness some auld biddy who trains animals so people can bet their life away on them fully deserves the women's award instead of Katie Taylor

What a ridiculous statement! These awards were given by POPULAR vote. The fact that GAA people didn't win them means that a tiny number of GAA fans voted in it or the show jumping fraternity were well organised and voted a multiple of times for their sport. You can blame RTE for many things, but not for the actions of Joe Public! Anyway, not worth getting overexcited about it. For the most part these are meaningless awards

I do not think that Jim Gavin or indeed the Dublin team will be too worried as they have got the titles that matter. Anyway, one does not win an award- it is given out by someone, somewhere even if it is by a phone in. The guys who have nothing else better to do usually are the ones who phone in for such awards -handed out.

a fine hurler who destroyed teams on his own up to minor level, would love to see him produce the talent he has on the senior stage another fine person off the field also who seems to be fairly well grounded

Team of the year was not a popular vote. Only McClean was voted on by Public.
