Does the Weaker Counties get fair coverage compared to the Elite Counties and a few others.
A similar thread on the home page askes the same question in relation to soccer and rugby and it's got 75 pages of response and that's good, by the way I'm just posting this to high light something not necessarily for a response.
1. I'm based over here in the UK and I use HS to keep in touch with gaa games, in particular Carlow games, there was four games on last night, three high profile county games and one from div 4 ie Carlow v Waterford, live match tracker concentrated their energies on giving a score for score account on all of the three high profile counties, and nothing on the Div 4 game between Carlow v Waterford albeit one and the final score, and this happens all the time with div 4 counties, is that fair. ???
2. I have access to the Sunday Independent, I searched everywhere on the gaelic games sport pages for a report on the Carlow v Waterford game and I could find absolutely nothing not even a comment but huge reports with photos on the other three games, but then when I thought all was lost I found at the bottom of a soccer column on page 15 a few humble words that were match related to the Carlow v Waterford game , is that fair. ???
3. Sunday sport on RTE radio, rarely if ever gives a passing comment on div 4 football or hurling for that matter unless it's a championship game and then it's minimum or score only, and nothing ever on the Sunday game, Is that fair ???
Not alone do I think it's not fair but I think it's insulting to the players and supporters of the weaker counties who put in huge effort to keep the games alive, imo, the weaker counties are as much a part of the gaa structure as the elite or high profile counties, without the weak counties there wouldn't be strong counties, all I'm saying is that they get their fair share of recognition, it's not a big ask, or is it. ??

Definitely not a big ask.
Unfortunately I think many of the GAA top brass are only concerned with making money from the top counties, hence the Super 8. They would be pleased to see so-called weaker counties eventually in an intermediate championship. So it's not in their interest to see division 3 or 4 clubs getting too much national media coverage. They don't seem interested in trying to improve overall standards. Keep the weak weak playing a lower standard in Division 3 and 4 and eventually a lower standard in an intermediate championship. The strong will get stronger and bring in the cash which they say gets passed back down to grassroots level. A great term 'grassroots level'. I know it means for clubs and schools and development etc and that is very important. But why not also try improving the lower level counties with the real hardcore supporters of Ireland following teams through thick and thin. It's nearly always thin for them. Cynical I know.

All counties and a combined region enter the Maguire Cup. Non-McCarthy Cup should consider having divisional county representation in the McCarthy Cup as suggested by Donal Óg Cusack. The man of the match in the senior hurling final is a Kerryman. There are good hurlers outside of the McCarthy Cup who deserve a platform for playing at least one round in the top tier hurling championship.

i have an interest because i know some of our players and management and respect them for the work they put in so i like to turn out and support them when i can. But if your asking me would i be as interested in watching two other weaker counties play on tv, the answer is no.
In every sport the demand is there for the best playing the best. I don't think sport would exist otherwise. It's up to the weaker counties to be pro active and look for ways to get to an elite level so that the masses want to see them play.

My other gripe is the Carlow v Waterford game was the only div 4 game played on Sat. night I had to micro scan the Sunday Indo. for the customary post match report, I eventually found a couple of comments in a soccer column at the very bottom of p.15 personally I found that a bit insulting, could they not have found the same 2 square inches on the gaelic games page.
Personally I beleive it's things like that, which devalues the counties and not the division 4 they play in.

Well its hard for weaker counties because they only really broadcast Division 1, but thats the way in all sports, the likes of Man Utd would get more coverage then AFC Wimbledon for example

Even good division 2 county like Galway has no coverage in either code which is amazing when you consider the effort put in week in week out. There is a maroon out on the media, hardly even a word on the match tracker even. Thank God for Galway Bay FM.
