A lot of referees don't know this rule

Shouldn't the referee's organization bring rule changes to congress to remove or fix up these 'daft' rules rather than ignoring them? Resolve the situation properly.

Agree with the poster above - why is this rule considered daft? It must be there for a reason. Probably player safety. Thinking about it more... implementing this rule would help resolve the crowd tackling we see all the time. It would give the man in possession more chance to get the ball away rather than having a free awarded against him for overcarrying

There's common sense reffing, but I feel like that's acceptable when it's a subjective decision. "Was that a noting offence, or a yellow card offense?" It's grand to give a little leeway there. I think everyone can understand that.
But when a rule is down in black and white, and for it deliberately not to be applied, I think that is wrong. Ignorance on the part of a majority of fans/players isn't an excuse. If a player is familiar with the rules, and takes an action (playing the ball on the ground with the fist, in this example) - for him to be punished for being more familiar with the rules is not justification for the objectively wrong decision to be made.

On a different tangent, I think a lot of why the black card isn't liked is because a lot of non-referees are unfamiliar with the specifics of the rule book, and a lot of refs don't apply the rules consistently, maybe because of this attitude that "everyone would go mad if I did".

Fair to say Kerry's equalizing goal today came from a free against a Monaghan player who had possession then fisted the ball away on the ground?
