Why does Connolly have to be brought into this thread? Christ sake there's enough about him.

On a hurling thread all the knowledgeable posters from all over the country have given their verdict on Austin Gleeson. A sexy score doesn't cut it here. The title of a great is only bestowed on a truly great team player in all aspects of the game.

i want austin gleeson to play in the all ireland final.but i also wanted connolly to play in the matches he missed. the brightest and best talents are who we all want to see.its an honour to see them.but they broke the rules, and theres a punishment there for transgressors. owens excuse about seeing it and thinking it wasnt even worthy of a caution is laughable and frankly embarrassing.does he not know the rules? if he doesnt why is he reffing an all ireland semi final?

Connolly lost the head and pushed a linesman. The most clear cut suspension i can remember in gaa history.

Yet you have about 50 threads open on him here and certain Dubs are whinging for 2 and a half months. He's name dropped everywhere. Get over it ffs. Connolly is always in controversy. He's back now and ye're still moaning! You have him for an all ireland semi, the first game you have to play all year. The BS surrounding Connolly is sickening. In 50 years Dublin youngsters will have him confused with James Connolly and think he was shot while wounded strapped to a chair.

It wasn't a case like Brian O'Meara from Tipp missing the 2001 final over an out of character strike.

You, my good man, are the first person to use the word hate on this thread. Posters are arguing that he is far from a great but supremely skilled.

Hate??? Why did you bring that word in?

Very well said. I want the best players to play too. But you have to have discipline and rules or you have a free for all.

There was a bang of 'laying down the early season football disciplinary marker' with the Connolly suspension. Pedantically following the letter of the law to get a big name suspended for a very minor infringement. If Bernard Brogan or Aidan O'Shea do something similar in their semi finals, and both counties win, I think the GAA powers that be will do their best to have their big games in the final. It's good for GAA business, advertisements, media etc to have the well known players on the pitch.

I really like Austin Gleeson, was priveliged to watch him play and I'm glad he'll be in the final. I think if Joe Canning did something similar he'd also get off. It's the end of season and the pendantic application of the rules can be ignored whereas the early season rules were strenuously applied when Dermot Connolly barely touched a linesman.

Doesn't matter about his past disciplinary record the CCCC have shown the whole country now what they decide to act on , they pick and chose which is completely wrong , you're either consistent with you're punishment or don't bother at all. Connolly is back we're still in the championship so it's all good but what's after happening tonight's makes a mockery of the whole association.

It was a witch hunt from the get go and now the whole country sees that.

I take it you never had a hurling helmet pulled off you. It's not pedantic.

And again 'barely touched' is pure rubbish. Hand laid on his chest in a threatening fashion. Gesticulating fingers in his face.

Austin is playing in the final and that is great for Waterford, the young man and his family.

Let him start to show his greatness now. Good for Galway too. Keep them on their toes if ever they needed reminding.

Poor James Owens. No way was his report going to condemn Austin. The man would be asking for a seriously hard time for probably the rest of his life!

Poor James Owens ? , he admits he saw the incident during the course of the game & he bottled it, failing to implement the rule, he then bottled it a second time with his report. He should be removed from the referee's list.

Doesn't matter about past disciplinary record technically but one would not like to see a well recognised sporting player like O'Meara banned. Meanwhile you could have no sympathy for Connolly who dices with fire both on and off the gaa pitch.

Anyway you started the thread about Austin Gleeson's 'greatness' now when comprehensively out debated on that score your moving on to Connolly? Very easy to use the multitude of angles to be discussed about him to escape the evidence that Austin Gleeson is not a great player.
