This evening's (Monday) RTE 6.01 News and Sport was spoiled for choice after the weekend matches. It could have featured Peter Harte's amazing winning point for Tyrone or even one of Sean Cavanagh's majestic earlier efforts. It could have shown the extraordinary celebrations that took place in the Tyrone dressing room after the game or maybe it could have shown Danny Cummins magical goals for Galway. It might also have shown the two Dublin goals both excellent examples of spellbinding attacking play and the best way to cut through a massed defence. It could have shown any of these uplifting moments from the Sunday's matches.

But no instead it decided to go with a totally negative story focused on black card offences. Foul after foul was shown followed by referees showing black or yellow cards. Yet another Monday moan from our so-called National broadcaster. It's the same every Monday. Let's focus on the most negative aspects of the weekend action seems to be the 6.01 News and Sport's only interest when it comes to football/hurling.

I had to put a mark on the wall as I agree with you there Mediaman ! There were loads of GAA positives this weekend so only discussing the black card doesn't promote our games.

But that shouldn't prevent people to not try and make improvements to the game. I hope now referees are having a say in the media, when they should have had more input before this joke of a card was introduced, means that it will soon be scrapped for more consistent refereeing. No chance would Colm Boyle would have taken out the Kildare player on Saturday under old rules as he knew it would be a straight red. Possibly teams are watching how strongly/leniently the current referees apply the red/yellow/black card laws and try to gain an advantage ? Eugene McGee still thinks it's mighty but he's slightly biased.

Eh rte actually showed all those moments on sunday game

Let's focus on the most negative aspects of the weekend action seems to be the 6.01 News and Sport's only interest when it comes to football/hurling."

Lets look at all of rtes coverage over the weekend from friday to monday. Mostly positive some brilllian and some negative. Unfortunately mediaman neglects to advise of anything positive.

On friday we had thank Gaa its friday and the championship on radio one at 10am - both positive
On saturday radio one had blanket coverage - sligo v clare derry v cavan and mayo v kildare ,(cork v longford was on newstalk) , martin kielys commentary on clare game was extremely good.
-the analysis was excellent and coverage all positive

On sunday the two games were on plus sunday game, radio one also had ulster final with nestalk having the other two games. RTE also showed repeat of thank gaa its friday and a repeat of a programme called the geansai,

The geansai programme (available on the player) was a documentary about the islands football competition in 2015 held in inisturk. The programme was excellent. Nothing but positive. I invite mediaman to watch this.

One question for mediaman -has rte in your opinion ever covered GAA in a positive manner even once, answering this may however require you to look aside from the six one news

Sad to see so many of our Rugby Union 'friends' have signed up to the C.J.Stander School of Debate - never mind the ball/facts just play the man.

I would hope the next time that mediaman feel so slighted that in the interest of consistency he will refer to similar incidents of playing the man that have ocured in gaa over the last while e.g. donegal v monaghan, dublin v westmeath, tipp v limerick , galway v offaly, cork v longford. (btw none those or the stander incidents were in my view particularly nasty , they are physical contact sports after all)

ive said it before and ill say it again - less cookery shows and more gaa please

OR maybe combine the two -- the reat gaa bake off - get gaa stars to compete , or maybe get some celebrity chef to do a halftime impromtu cooking demo during championship games (would mean less punditry but whould that really be a bad thing) --the possibilities are endless

or maybe you may accept it to be very strange that rte could somehow despite all the action over the weekend, work it into a negative?...seems fairly deliberate ploy to me

Why use a petty derogatory term for rugby?
Why doesn't mediaman have an open petition or a more active campaign for change? Why does mediaman want change from RTE yet will not show his own name and put his own name to a campaign for change?
Why does mediaman comment on this topic and this topic alone on this forum?
Its a bit hypocritical to call people like myself, who debate with some of what mediaman posts, whingers when mediaman is simply whinging considering he has yet to show anywhere that he has actually contacted RTE and shown a reply from RTE about why they cover sport in the manner they do

maybe so - i am merely making the point that rte had some positive gaa coverage over the weekend thats all - maybe the six one news report was deliberately negative, if it was then its a reasonable view that the geansai programme and radio coverage was deliberately positive, i do find it strange that all the focus is on a slot in the six one news, i would be of the view that all the coverage should be taken into account, most of which (not all) in my view was positive

I think Mediaman's observations are informative. As I've said before, the RTE 6.0 News & Sport is primetime family viewing & constantly presenting our national games in a negative light (if at all) in the Sport section is less than helpful & would seem to be endemic. Mediaman has provided facts & stats which clearly support that assertion.

Not at all, by this stage we are all well aware of your opinion.

You've made it known you, as others have, countless times that you disagree.

If you think someone is talking nonsense, why feel the need to respond every time he posts?

and others are showing fact which disagree- six one news had coverage of launch of all ireland series which was positive - no mention of this from the anti rte brigade- look if you view as rte doing something re gaa as being negative fair enough - but be consistent when they do something positive mention that as well.

"Its called negativity bias. Its why most of the news every night on every station around the world is bad news. Nothing to do with an RTE bias."

That's true with the news but sports news doesn't usually suffer the same fate in terms of negativity."
I'd say it's not so much 'negativity bias',more the constant need for controversy. It's how the news media works in the twitterrati generation. Eg., headline; "Player X in blackcard Shame!", followed by numerous tweets from idiots along the lines of, "absolutely disgraceful!","Disgusting!","They should apologise immediately!",etc,etc....
Basically a race to declare yourself "offended" by innocuous happenings, with little to no actual news or insight.

How do you know he hasn't contacted rte?

Who's to say he doesn't work for them himself?

As for being derogatory, its quite obvious that those who are circling the wagons here are rugby followers who have their own agenda and have no problem trying to belittle/poke fun at the OP.

Im simply saying if you think its nonsense ignore his contributions, there are sufficient number of us who find it informative
